Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.

Hello everyone,
The Wiki Loves Monuments International Team would like to invite you to an
office hour on May 26 @ 3:00 pm UTC. This hour is open to anyone interested
in Wiki Loves Monuments, including past and future organizers, and
participants.
For this month, the primary topic will be to discuss and collect feedback
on the newcomer's guide to WLM. With the surveys, the International Team
has been receiving feedback that there is not a place for first-time
participants (who are also new to Wikimedia) to read about participating in
the competition. Last month we got on board a designer to work with us to
design a friendly guide for first-time participants. Here is the first
draft of the wireframe:
https://xd.adobe.com/view/03bd18ac-99e5-420f-976b-ad2fe5b543d9-56ee/. We
will use this office hour to collect feedback from community members and
national organizers regarding a strategy to implement this for various
national competitions. You can also share your specific feedback related to
the design directly on the link above.
The meeting details are as follows:
- July 23 @ 3:00 pm UTC (https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1627052415)
- On Google Meet: https://meet.google.com/yaa-keho-nva | click here to
add this to your Google Calendar
<https://calendar.google.com/event?action=TEMPLATE&tmeid=Mmg3NmpuNDFoMDA3YWt…>
- Agenda/Notes: https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/WLM-2021-May
We hope that you are able to join us, and we look forward to the discussion.

Krishna Chaitanya
*for the Wiki Loves Monuments International Team*
Greetings.
My name is Zulfadli and I am a Wikimedia Commons user <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Zulfadli51> from Brunei. I am interested to organise Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 (WLM 2021) for the first time for Brunei. Therefore, I would like to seek your assistance on how I can initiate in organising this event.
For now, my objective is to have Brunei listed in one of the participating countries in WLM 2021. However, I am unsure through what channel I can make this happen (i.e. for Brunei to be listed).
Just a brief background about myself, among the Wikimedia projects I am most active on English and Malay Wikipedias. I have been a user <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Zulfadli51> on English Wikipedia since 8 April 2011 and as of 15 July 2021 I have made 3,272 edits. On Malay Wikipedia, I have been a user <https://ms.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pengguna:Zulfadli51> since 24 October 2012 and as of 15 July 2021 I have made 9,909 edits. I am also an admin <https://ms.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Penyelia/Senarai_penyelia> on Malay Wikipedia since 13 May 2018. I have attended <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ESEAP_Conference_2018/Participants> ESEAP Conference 2018 in Bali, Indonesia as a non-affiliated community member.
I am mostly interested in improving Brunei-related contents. My personal aim is to improve encyclopedic coverage on Brunei through various Wikimedia projects, in particular Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
I look forward to your response. I would also like to convery appreciation in advance for any assistance and guidance for this endeavour.
Best regards,
Zulfadli.

Hi all,
Hope you are well! I just wanted to update you on the Commons app progress
for WLM integration - we are (hopefully) close to being able to do a beta
release. Currently the only two major items that we have yet to complete
are attaching the appropriate templates to the files uploaded, and
integration of country-specific property queries via the tool that we are
collaborating with Stephen on.
To that end, we have a few questions:
1. Which templates should be attached for a WLM upload? The initial plan
was to attach
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020 (or
more specifically, the 2021 version). However, there is no field in that
template which allows us to place the value of the monument ID in. Is there
a way to work around this?
2. How do we find the monument ID? Given that we are using Wikidata rather
than the monument DB, is the Wikidata QID synonymous with the monument ID?
3. Is it possible to have a sandbox "monument" that we can use to test our
implementation end-to-end, before WLM starts?
Many thanks!
Best regards,
Josephine

*Full announcement (also available at https://w.wiki/3a5s
<https://w.wiki/3a5s>)*
It's that time of year again when we get started for Wiki Loves Monuments.
By 2020, we have completed ten iterations of the international edition.
Thanks to all other organizers, participants, sponsors and partners, who
collectively achieved this feat. With the onset of a global pandemic, last
year has been particularly challenging for many organizers to keep the
photo competition running. Nevertheless, we received 200,000+ images.
Though it is great to see several countries recovering to normal life after
a long period of lockdowns and restrictions, many countries aren't quite
there yet. Since February this year, we have been organizing office hours
to have inputs from community members regarding various aspects related to
the competition, which also includes the timeline. The framework for 2021
is based on all consolidated feedback from these conversations and surveys
we did for 2020 (sorry for the delay in publishing those reports!)
- *Responsibility for national organizers:* We would like to emphasize
that the international team coordinates the national competitions: we are
not qualified to tell you exactly how to organize your competition.
National teams are best placed to decide whether and how to organize a
competition in your country. We will try to help set an international
framework, and assist in the exchange of best practices. We expect that
national organizers will follow the guidelines and regulations set by their
national governments and health authorities. Note that funding and WMF
affiliate recognition may come with additional guidance/requirements.
- *Transparency of national juries:* The international team has been
receiving feedback over the last couple of years for better
transparency of
national juries, to avoid potential conflict of interest organizers may
have with jurors. So from this year on, national organizers
should publish
their information (username or name) of jurors and rounds
organized on this
page
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2021/Juries>
.
- *Extended timeline:* Many organizers welcomed the extended timeline
last year. Though we will be continuing that this year, but not exactly as
we did last year. National organizers have the opportunity to choose a
different range of dates for their national competition. You can pick any
range of 30 or 31 days within the period of September-October 2021 as your
upload dates. That means that one country does not have to use the same
upload dates as another. This will allow flexibility according to the
situation in various countries.
- The last date for all uploads is 31 October 2021, and any uploads
beyond that date will be ineligible for consideration.
- The jury deadline will be December 5, 2021, for all countries.
- *Exchange of knowledge:* National organizers innovate in many ways
to make their competitions successful. While some try out new social media
campaigns, some organize an interesting photo walk, and others use Wikidata
to make the upload process easy. It would be helpful for other organizers
to learn from these practices. Here is a page
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2021/Knowle…>
on Wikimedia Commons where you can share your strategies and let the
community know what worked, what didn’t and any suggestions for others
interested in the idea.
- *Special awards in 2021:* Though the international team tried to
organize special awards last year, we couldn’t make it work. We have a
budget this year as well to award special prizes. We would like community
members to suggest ideas for these special prizes. For example,
underrepresented regions, the most numbers of unique monuments covered etc.
Please send in your ideas via email or by posting on the Commons talk page
by July 15.
Lastly, and most importantly, if you are interested in organizing the
competition for your country/region, please sign up at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2021/Partic…
.
If you need any support with organizing, please reach out to one of
the international
team members

or you can also post to the mailing list, or on the help desk
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2021>
on Wikimedia Commons.
Best,
Krishna Chaitanya,
