Hi all,
on Friday May 13, 2011 there will be an international Wiki Loves Monuments
workshop in Berlin. This workshop will be organized by me and Maarten and
Wikimedia Deutschland.
Because we're organizing a European contest, we would like to make sure that
every participating country/region is going to be represented at this
workshop, so that we can coordinate matters, exchange experiences and help
wach other with problems.
*who is coming*
I would like to ask all participating countries to check with themselves who
will be going. There is a maximum of 25 participants, so please restrict
yourself in sending people. There will be no absolute maxima at this stage,
but I ask for your understanding. Please send *asap* on this list who will
be coming. We will then provide you with a code to register.
*costs*
The costs for this meeting will be 25-35 euro per night, incl breakfast and
your own travel costs. If you are representing a chapter that would like to
join WLM and to attend, but does not have the funds, please send your
details anyway, and let us know that you need financial support. We will
find a way to support you.
*program*
The program still will have to be figured out. However, on
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Timeline
you
can find several topics that will have to be discussed.
*hackathon*
This workshop is coupled to the hackathon happening 13-15 May in Berlin too.
This allows for interaction with the developers, and ways to ask them to
help us write tools etc which we need. See for more information about the
hackathon: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Berlin_Hackathon_2011 . If you are
a developer, you will also be able to register there. Some developers might
also attend our workshop. If you're a developer, consider to hang around two
more days :)
If you have any questions, please ask them. I dont have to remind you that
we need to act quickly here, sorry for the delays, because the tickets will
get more expensive etc.
Best regards,
Lodewijk

Hey all,
I have been wondering for some time about a tool which could be used for
adding geographic coordinates to the list of monuments in a country.
Some users on the Polish Wikipedia have already started adding
coordinates to monuments located near their locations (example:
Answering their question about what tool should be used, I told them to
use the famous GeoLocator
<http://tools.freeside.sk/geolocator/geolocator.html> which has been
used both on the Polish Wikipedia as well as on the Commons.
What tool do you use? Are there any other, better suitable tools to be used?
Another question is about the possibility of having a pan-European
sponsorship or patronage from a European (not only from the European
Union) organisation or institution.
It has been suggested to me that we may try getting sponsorship or
patronage from Europeana <http://www.europeana.eu/portal/> and today I
have been leaked that indeed we have gained sponsorship from that
organisation; however I can't find any information about that in the
archives, so that's maybe a behind-the-scenes activity? Any upcoming
press releases of which I haven't been told? :-)
Regards,

Hi Lars,
starting a new thread.
The exact definition of a monument depends by country. We go with the
definition that the national government is using - they usually recognize
monumental objects. Which category(ies) you want to use, depends on your
situation, and you can make a choice there. I suggest you discuss that with
the local volunteers and on the project. The common remark: do whatever
works best in your country.
Best,
Lodewijk

Dear all,
OK, I do not want to hurt anyone while saying this, so please feel
free to shunt this email and never to talk to me again if I am out of
place and maybe you've discussed this for ever or something.
I find the WLM monuments logo a bit sad. It's very academic, it says
what it should, but if I try to imagine it on a cap or an armband or a
t-shirt, I'm left a bit un-wow-ed.
So I was thinking that maybe launching a logo competition might be a
good way to:
*get a funkier logo
*get some attention in the Wikimedia communities
What do you think?
I am actually ready to launch it and monitor it and maybe find a jury
and and and and...
Cheers,
Delphine

Dear all,
I am happy to announce on behalf of the Board of the Wikimedia Polska
Association that there have been a few resolutions concerning Wiki Loves
Monuments 2011.
Firstly, it has been decided that Poland is now officially joining the
project this year! We'll use the name of 'Wiki lubi zabytki' and I will
take the role of the project's coordinator.
Secondly, it has been decided that Wikimedia Polska is sending two of
its representatives for the meeting in Berlin on May 13-15. I will be
one of them and we are looking for the second person.
And finally, the Board decided that we are going to support two
representatives of another Wikimedia Foundation chapter for a total sum
of 1,000 EUR in going for the meeting. From the countries that have
already joined the project we have chosen the now third-youngest
chapter, Wikimedia Eesti (Wikimedia Estonia) -- although there is the
possibility that if the Estonian chapter doesn't have any
representatives, we may support another chapter.
Best regards,
- --

Hi all,
things are going better and better, and I see people getting excited all
over the world.
Last week I was in Wroclaw, Poland, to present on Wiki Loves Monuments on
their annual conference to make them enthusiast about the contest and
persuade volunteers to participate. It was pretty successful I think, at
least several volunteers from Poland were committed to make this happen in
Poland (reported here before by Odder). However, there were also people from
Ukraine and Belarus present, and they are also considering to participate if
it is practically possible. Thank you Wikimedia Polska for making this
possible!
This weekend I am at the Chapters Meeting (because of my involvement in
Movement Roles), and I was able to lead a session (together with the
facilitator of course) on WIki Loves Monuments. I will post the
documentation on that later on, but would like to give you an ahead notice
on this. The session was really positive, and I learned that there were many
questions still left over. I hope that the documentation coming out of this
session will therefore benifit many others. Delphine shared a whole bunch of
notes with us from the AGM at Wikimedia France where WLM was discussed with
some pretty cool ideas, so I hope these will be up soon, too. Many chapters
present were really interested.
In the mean while, Austria joined Wiki Loves Monuments too (Welcome!) and
some more are considering. What is maybe also exciting, non-european
chapters are considering to set up a similar event.
Both presentations I gave (they are quite similar) are available on
Wikimedia Commons in category:Wiki_Loves_Monuments .
Of course you also saw the great report by Maarten, who visited in Berlin
the AGM of Wikimedia Deutschland, and was able to help them make quite some
progress - also great work :) Please see his email for more info on that.
If you have any questions, please let me know through this list.
I repeat: If you need some help in brainstorming, to give a workshop in your
region for your volunteers, please let us know through this list.
Best regards from Berlin,
Lodewijk
Hi everyone,
I already heard from several people that they are working on tools. I
would like to make this a shared effort so I created
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Tools to
document what we already have and what needs to be developed. Please add
your tools no matter how unfinished they are!
I already added one wanted tool, the "search and export tool". That tool
has been on my list of wanted tool for almost a year. Who wants to help
to get this tool going?
Maarten
Hi,
We have some serious issues of running WLM in Finland. Museovirasto
(The National Board of Antiquities)[1] has some suitable data.
Unfortunately they didn't give us any special permissions to use that,
and don't seem to be interested to partner with us. We can only access
the data through Paikkatietoikkuna [2] which has very strict rules,
including that all data must be destroyed after one year after
downloading.
This means that unless something comes up we will not be able to
participate in WLM, because we cannot get the data we need in a format
we can share.
The only bright side seems to be that they are in process of opening
the data even more, so maybe in year or two we could use that.

Hi everyone,
I'm very happy to announce that De Bond Heemschut is going to support
the organisation of Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 in the Netherlands!
From their website: "De Bond Heemschut is a private organization which
has worked continuously for almost 100 years (since 1911) to preserve
the Dutch cultural heritage. 'Heemschut' derives from the words
'schutten' meaning to 'enclose' (i.e. protect) and 'heem', 'one's
premises'. As a heritage organization our work involves protecting
historically interesting structures and sites - everything from an
endangered tea house to carved up land, for example alongside the
motorways.
We carry out this work with the drive and dedication of volunteers. Each
of the Dutch provinces and the city of Amsterdam has its own independent
Heemschut committee." (from http://www.heemschut.nl/en.html, more
information over there)
They already supported Wiki Loves Monuments 2010 with some prices and
with someone in our jury. This year Heemschut is going to support us a
lot more with "offline" PR, something we didn't really get to last year.
I look forward working with them!
Maybe something for the other countries to look into: Does your country
have a volunteer based heritage organization like Heemschut? It would be
a natural partner to work with.
