Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.
Aubrey
Hi all,
In 2019, Wiki Loves Monuments will be organized for the 10th time. As we
will be celebrating this achievement, we would like to use this opportunity
to reflect on the years behind us and learn how we can improve Wiki Loves
Monuments.
We have created a short survey to ask you to help us learn about the areas
that we can do better within our mission: to freely document and raise
awareness about the monuments, increase contributions to Wikimedia
projects, and bolster local Wikimedia communities.
I would like to invite you all to help us think about this by filling out
this 4 minute survey:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdG0Dx9CBo613D5XdQ-nCzCe7P_F2k0niS…
We still want to do all of this through an annual, federated, global,
low-barrier photo competition, please keep that in mind as the frame we'd
like to operate under. While your thoughts and recommendations about any
aspect of Wiki Loves Monuments are welcome, we will be paying extra
attention to recommendations that can help the contest become more global:
to help us empower more people from more diverse demographics to join the
project, as organizers, jurors, participants, and beyond.
Thank you for your time in advance.
On behalf of the international team,
Lodewijk

Hi all,
One of the hard things that national teams run into year after year, is
setting up a good landing page. In the past we have offered wordpress
templates to help teams with a good default option.
However, we want to slowly move towards having an excellent default option
on Wikimedia Commons. Who would be willing to help design that and set it
up in an easy to edit way? I'd love to brainstorm a little more with one or
two others about this, but I was thinking some basic requirements should be:
- setting up the landing page has to be possible without extensive
knowledge of wiki markup or templates
- it has to work in both RTL and LTR (or we create two versions, fine with
me too)
- it has to support multiple languages
- it needs to have a super clear workflow for participants: point out the
basics of the competitions, where to find the monuments and how to upload.
- be low maintenance and easy to set up, with possibility to expand as a
country has a more complex setup/requirements.
Who would be willing and able to help out? Please join the conversation
here: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T198028
Thanks!
Lodewijk
Hi everyone,
It's that exciting time of the year again, Wiki Loves Monuments is getting
started! I know several of you have already started, but if you haven't:
this is a great time to do so!
The idea behind Wiki Loves Monuments is to invite the general audience in
your country to photograph built heritage and share it with the world
through Wikimedia Commons. We do that through a federated competition,
which means that the national teams are key to our success: they organize
the national competitions. At the end of the process, the national juries
can nominate up to 10 photos to the international jury. The international
jury will then consider those photos once again, and select the
international winners. We will announce the prizes for the international
winners later.
If you are a group of Wikimedians, a chapter or user group that is
interested in participating (again) this year, then please sign up! You can
find a list of countries that has already done so here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017/Partic…
If you want to know how to organize, please reach out to one of the members
of the international team
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/Organi…>.
You can also leave a message on the help desk
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Help_desk> or
send an email to the public mailing list
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesmonuments>. We do
have a fair amount of documentation
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Documentati…>
available, but some of it may be outdated (we appreciate any help in
improving it!).
Like last year, we've also added a tab called 'Organizers' in Wiki Loves
Monuments landing page on Commons:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017/Organi…
We'd like to encourage you to add your name and those of your team members
with a short description to the list. This information is helpful for those
from outside of the
Movement or the project who end up on that page and want to learn more
about your national competition, it also provides an opportunity for us to
get to know each other via this one page. :) Every year, there are more
than 150 national organizers that make Wiki Loves Monuments happen and it
would be great to know more about all of these amazing people. :)
We will also have a presence at Wikimania this year, and organize a meetup.
Please keep an eye out!
If you like to stay informed, make sure you're a member of our discussion
mailing list
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesmonuments> (
wikilovesmonuments(a)lists.wikimedia.org ). The most important announcements
are also sent to our announcement mailing list
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wlm-announce>: if you don't
have much capacity for emails, please at least make sure multiple people in
your team are subscribed to that!
If you have any questions, please reach out! We're here to help each other.
Lets have a great competition again :)
Best,
Lodewijk

Hi all,
as usual, I'd like to keep a visualization of our participating countries.
See here for 2017
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Participating_Countries_WLM_2017.svg>.
Unfortunately, that map is a bit outdated (in particular South Sudan is not
separate yet).
Could anyone help me set up a new version of this map with an updated world
map? Ideally with the same style (white countries with grey borders &
oceans, including antarctica).
Thanks in advance!
Lodewijk
Hey all,
As some of you probably know, one of my goals is this year to find better
approaches to how we can make Wiki Loves Monuments a success in African
countries (especially sub-Saharan).
I proposed a roundtable discussion to get a conversation with the key
stakeholders going as a continuation of the conversation we started at Wiki
Indaba.
Unfortunately, my proposal to have a round table discussion on making Wiki
Loves Monuments thrive in Africa was rejected for Wikimania this year
(forced to 'merge' with a presentation/workshop with different audience).
I'd like to see if there is another way we can have this important
conversation. If we can't have this when Wikimania is in Africa, when can
we?! So if it can't be in the program, what other methods do you see to
make this happen? I have some ideas, but would love to hear more thoughts!
Please leave your ideas here:
https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Effeietsanders/Make_Wiki_Love…
Thanks!
Best,
Lodewijk
