Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.
Aubrey
Hello,
I wanted to let you know that on behalf on the WLM international team, I
submitted to the community wishlist [1] the project: “An organizer
dashboard for multimedia contribution drives”.

ey/Programs_and_events/An_organizer_dashboard_for_multimedia
_contribution_drives
This idea started at the team offsite meeting of last year. I hope you find
it interesting too. :) Feel free to comment, whether to support it or to
raise potential problems with the idea as currently framed.
There was something I would like to clarify to you, local organizers. In
this project proposal, I outline issues that we identified as being common
in WLM (and similar competitions) − but that does not mean they happen all
the time, everywhere :)
So for example, when I write that « monitoring the large volumes of
contributions may often fall back on the shoulders of Wikimedia Commons
editors » − I know for a fact that many many local organizer teams do an
amazing job checking every single upload − but I mean that there is nothing
that makes it really easy for them to do it.
Same, when I write that « it may take months before participants hear back
from the organizers » − I know that some organisers make a point to follow
up with every uploader − but that then again, there is no easy way of doing
it.
The dashboard idea is to provide an easy, obvious and scalable way of
performing actions that many local organizer teams have solved at the local
level.
Thanks,
--

Dear all,
I am writing to give you a brief summary of the international jury process
so far, now that we have reached just beyond the halfway point of the
international jury process.
As you know, each year we seek to bring together a panel of experts in the
fields of photography and cultural heritage, together with experienced
Wikimedians, in order to create an international jury that is balanced,
neutral and diverse, This year's jury is composed of the following
individuals:
- Benamin Benita - international coordinator of #MuseumWeek and project
manager for Unite4Heritage at UNESCO
- Wolter Braamhorst - Europa Nostra & Editor of Heritage in Action
magazine
- Katie Chan - Wikimedia UK
- David Iliff - experienced Wikimedian & photographer
- Katherine Maher - Executive Director, Wikimedia Foundation
- Daniel Schwen - experienced Wikimedian & photographer
- Manit Sriwanichpoom - photographer
- Tala Vahabzadeh - UNESCO Tehran & professional photographer
We are truly thrilled and honoured to have such a broad range of talent and
experience on board as jurors, and their input has been incredibly valuable
so far in the jury process.
The international jury process is taking place over three stages, In the
first stage, the initial pool of 489 images was brought down to a pool of
the final 65 photos. The second stage of voting is currently underway, and
the jurors are in the process of further narrowing down this selection in
advance of the final stage of voting, which will open over the next few
days. In the final stage of voting, the jurors will be establishing the
final ranking and determining the overall winner. We expect the results to
be announced in the first two weeks of December, however I will be in touch
with you once again with an update over the next weeks.
Thank you once again for all your hard work in organising your local
competitions and in soliciting participation in your own countries - the
jurors have had a fantastic time looking through the stunning images that
have been submitted around the world!
Best regards,
Neville

Dear all,
I'm proud to tell you that last Saturday was held the award ceremony of
WLM in Italy!
The ceremony was held in Milan, with the collaboration of the
municipality. The room was full of photographers, wikipedians and
journalists: we are recording a good media coverage.
You can see the picture of the ceremony in this category:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Award_ceremony_of_Wiki_Loves_Mo…
So, I'm glad to announce the 10 winners of Italy:

Anxiously waiting for the international ranking, I want to thank the
international team for all the support and for the good organization!
Best,
Cristian

Hi all,
Thank you all for your great help in submitting your country's nominations
in time and in the format requested, we really appreciate your cooperation
on this, as it allows us to get our jury process off to a smooth start.
Unfortunately, there are still a handful of national competitions who have
not yet formally submitted their nominations. These are the following:
Brazil; Saudi Arabia; Tunisia. We may be able to process these if we
receive their nominations in the next hours (*by midday UTC tomorrow, 7
November*), however we will regretfully have to exclude nominations that do
not reach us by that deadline. For this reason, if you are involved in any
of these campaigns (or know anyone who is), we would greatly appreciate it
if you could urgently reach out to them and inform them of this. May I also
remind you to follow the submission guidelines set out in an earlier email
(here:
https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikilovesmonuments/2017-October/00872…).
Please feel free to contact me off-list with any questions or
clarifications you may have about this.
We are currently setting up the jury process, importing the nominations
that you have submitted into the jury tool. The jury process itself is
explained in more detail here (http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/jury - the
list of jurors will be updated in the coming hours). We plan to go through
this process at a steady and thorough pace, ensuring that we finish the
process by the end of November. We expect to announce the winners
officially in the first two weeks of December, depending on any challenges
we come across regarding the jury report and checks and balances for
particular images.
Thank you once again for all your help and we look forward to contacting
you again with news about the final winners!
Best regards,
Neville

Hi all,
On 2017-10-19 and 2017-10-20, I will be in Frankfurt [1] on behalf of
the international team to attend Zugang gestalten [2] and give a
presentation about Wiki Loves Monuments and how different
partner/collaborator/stakeholder groups from different countries work
together to make Wiki Loves Monuments happen every year. While we in
the international team have some knowledge of the work that is going
on in different countries, a lot of it is unknown to us, especially
when it comes to the specifics of relations with governments, cultural
institutions, media, people/participants, etc. And this is why I'm
reaching out to you:
If you are a present or past Wiki Loves Monuments organizer or someone
who has worked closely with Wiki Loves Monuments campaign in your
country and would like to share your knowledge with us, I'd be
grateful for that. You can do this over email (public or private), or
we can set up a 15-min IRC/Hangout/Skype call.
If you want to follow the task corresponding to this presentation to
get updates about it, you can do so at
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T177842
And last but not least: if you will be in Frankfurt next week, let's meet. :)
Best,
Lily
