Hi everyone,
Would it be nice to have a special price for video's made for Wiki Loves
Monuments? We don't have an awful lot of user made video's and this
might be a fun way to promote it.
Maarten
Ps. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_loves_monuments.ogg is a
nice first step :-)
Hi Nico,
thanks a lot for your email. Just taking the upload form aside, to avoid
confusion of topics.
The upload form is not finished yet, because it will be based on the new
upload interface of Wikimedia Commons. I don't know the exact timeline, but
I got many guarantees that it will definitely be ready in time. Of course
you can expect an announcement here when the time is there.
Best,
lodewijk

Dear all,
After I returned home, I realized that even though we made a wonderful
budget for the European part of Wiki Loves Monuments, we did not decide how
to split it up amongst the European chapters. Please find below the
estimated costs. I would like to ask the chapters that can spare it, to
consider contributing to this budget. More specifically, I would like to get
at least a reply from: France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland
whether they would be able to take a share in this budget.
Thanks,
Lodewijk
To bring back in memory, the following costs were estimated:
TOTAL: Worst case scenario: 10.300 EURO + shipping - Best-case scenario: 3.000 EURO
* Prizes (1.500 EURO) (if no sponsors are found)
* Printing 500+ calendars (WMPL will find budget locally): 3.000 euro
* shipping + boxes, winning messages and so on. ( 200 for finalists + 300
for the chapters)
* Intl. thankyou goodies (calendars will go for that now)
* grant system for chapters that need help. 1.500 euro
* Optional: Jury costs? (7 people (says 8 above)): 2.400 (travel) + 400
(hotel) + 200 (meeting room) + 300 (living costs) = 3.300 euro
* Announcement costs? 1.000 euro (worst case)
please note:
* Hopefully printing costs will end up at zero
* Odder is still trying to find an estimate for shipping costs
* Jury costs we did not make a decision on, but I budgeted it in for worst
case.
* Announcement costs are assuming that we cannot do that during DISH.
* This is on top of existing budget by Wikimedia Nederland (for travel costs
etc)
Wiki loves monuments
European photo contest runs in more than 10 countries.
Wiki Loves Monuments is a europe-wide photo contest around monuments in
September, organized by Wikimedia, the movement behind Wikipedia.
Wikipedia is the popular free encyclopedia with more than 400 million
visitors per month - collaborativly authored by volunteers.
Cultural heritage is an important part of the knowledge Wikipedia aims
to collect and disseminate. Everybody can contribute, not only in
writing articles, but also with taking pictures. An image tells more
than a thousand words and can be useful in many different languages at
the same time.
Cultural heritage is around the corner - almost everywhere. And
everybody can participate easily by raising awareness of monuments
nearby their home. And even locals can (re-)discover the cultural,
historical or scientific significance of their neighborhood.
Wikipedia volunteer communities in more than 10 countries joined this
initiative enthusiastically and pave the way to make participation as
easy as possible. The contest is inspired by the highly successful 2010
pilot in the Netherlands, resulting in more than 12.500 new images under
a free license, which can be used in Wikipedia and by anybody for any
purpose.
Any support - from a single image in the contest to spreading the word
or becoming a partner - is warmly welcomed. The coming September,
cultural heritage will be in the spotlight of Wikipeda from Portugal to
Estonia.

Hi all.
Has been a pleasure to meet you all in Berlin.
I wanted to share this link:
http://www.hyperorg.com/blogger/2011/05/17/dpla-europeana
about Europeana and the meeting they're having in The Haag.
Moreover, today I added "Statistics" as an Open Issue in our results:
I was wondering if we could ask to the Foundation, instead of a grant,
some work-time of Erik Zachte to set up a central/federal tool for
statistics in Commons.
He is probably the best person for that, and a tool ad hoc could serve
many participant countries.
(Actually, i'm thinking that asking work-time of an employee instead
of "mere" money
could be an efficient idea to get things done: we could talk about
this to Sj, and then the Board of Trustees could discuss about it.)
Still hoping to participate,
cheers,
Aubrey
Hi,
While looking at the Etherpad report of last weekend's meeting, I
noticed that you're looking to get in touch with OSM. In Romania, we
have pretty close connections with the OSM volunteers and we could
probably provide support on that side. Please let me know if there is
something specific that WLM would need (other than having a map of the
monuments)
Thanks,
Strainu

Dear All,
this is just to remind you that this past Wednesday the announcement
that we've collectively written at the meeting in Berlin, should have
been published at your local Village Pumps.
The result of our work and the draft is available at the Commons here[1]
- -- as far as I know, the announcement has been already published at the
Dutch and at the Polish Wikipedia.
Please let us know if you publish the announcement so we could easily
keep track of what has already been done.

P.S. Thank you all for a great time in Berlin! I haven't been able to
say goodbye to all of you, but I've really enjoyed my time at the meeting.
Warm regards,

Hi there everybody,
We discussed the topic in our IRC meeting on Saturday and now I just created
the page "Lists of European Monuments" on Commons (
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Lists_of_European_Monuments). It's
supposed to serve as a starting point when researching monuments, especially
if you're not familiar with a country's subdivisions and/or language.
We won't create actual lists of monuments on Commons but rather link to the
existing ones on the local Wikipedias. We could also think about linking to
the corresponding categories as well, maybe even having a bot that runs
statistics on the monuments categories and puts the results in a
table/template (e.g. a column for "Number of unidentified monuments").
Endless possibilities...
But right now the most important thing is to get the lists up there and to
put them in a logical structure. For Portugal this was quite easy, for
Germany it's going to be tough...
For all the other countries, someone has to volunteer to create the
respective page and to translate the information on the main page and
eventually all the other pages. The main language should be english, the
second one listed the language of the country the page is for and then
alphabetically (or whatever ;) )
I hope that the concept has become clear, if there are any questions, please
ask, if there are any great ideas how we could improve this list of lists
and make it even more usfeul: go ahead and try!
Kilian
