Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.
Aubrey
Hi all
Just a note to say I can ask UNESCO again to promote WLM, however I got
some pushback last year because the page to find your country is only
available in English.
<goog_921670993>
https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/participate/
It would make it much much more likely I can convince them again to promote
it if this page could be available in French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and
Russian also.
Best
Hi Alexandre,
It looks like that is going to work.
Regards,
Isaac

Hi everyone,
With the help of Seddon at the WMF we have been working over the past while
to redesign the banners to make them more effective over a range of
devices, use standing best practices from fundraising on what we think is
effective, and make it more feasible to test effectiveness down the line.
This means that the banners will be redesigned a bit compared to what you
may have been used to. We will use a default design as usual, that you will
be able to see here
<https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wiki_Loves_Monuments&banner=wlm2…>
(adjust
language and country code to play with it), with a logo on the left and a
standardized and translated text in the middle. By default, we will not
show an image on the right (due to visibility concerns).
Note that there are some known issues such as wrong url which should
disappear once the banner goes 'live'.
This does mean that we'll have to be more conservative with requests to
tweak the design a little without really good reasons. For example, we will
keep the logo on the left and the color scheme of the banner consistent
across countries. This will help with branding, but the most important
thing is that it will help with scaling (all the different requests make it
harder and harder to maintain).
If you have a particularly good reason for your country, it is again
possible to change the text and the image on the right for your country.
You can request this here
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2019/Centra…>.
I know some countries have requested very particular changes (different
background colors, border colors) which will unfortunately not be an option
right now. We expect that the new design will overall still be an
improvement for everyone.
Good luck with the last bits of the preparations!
Best,
Lodewijk
(on behalf of the international team)
Hi Jernej,
We have some promotional material from previous years. You can see our
social media feed for examples (promo clip, poster, countdown, etc.):
https://www.instagram.com/wikilovesmonuments/
1. 2018 poster in square form factor for social media:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_2018_Poster_sq_en.png
(It's available in English, Arabic, Spanish and Farsi. I can make one for
you if you send me the right text and also change the dates) I can also
send you the original file (in Pages)
2. Promo clip: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_Promo_4_5.webm
and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_Promo_Arabic_ver1.webm
This is available both in English and Arabic. It's a powerpoint
presentation that I convert to a slideshow.
3. Countdown like this one <https://www.instagram.com/p/BoUMSnAgkVH/> are
again powerpoint files that I can share with you.
Also if you have social media accounts please send me the links so we can
promote them on our own social media channels.

Hi everybody!
starting during the Wikimania Hackathon we created responsive
Page-template that can be adapted for the local WLM landingpages (the
pages, the banner is targeted to). You'll find it here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Documentati…
Feel free to copy the wikitext source to your desired lemma and start to
translate and customize it.
This landing page is based on a set of templates and stylesheets, that
are not jet documented. But I think you'll get the purpose of each
element while observing it's usage in the landing page. If anyone is
interested in helping me with the documentation, that would be great.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:WLXpage
Currently it is only the landingpage itself. But I am working on
subpages and a Navigation as well. Hopefully that will be usable within
the next few days. I'll give you a note.
I hope that this page helps you to prepare your countries competion?!
Best wishes for the pre-WLM sprint // Martin
DISCLAIMERS:
1) The whole thing should work on mobile and has been tested against the
Vector and Minerva Skin. But it still is in early beta stage - so please
don't be too angry if there are any unclean spots or display errors.
I'll try to do some quality assurance before the competition starts,
which will automatically tile in wherever the templates are used.
2) The Template-Styles StyleSheet is generated via SASS. So if you have
any suggestions concering enhancements and bugs, don't do it yourself
but contact me. Otherwise your changes maybe overwritten by the next update.
3) I didn't invest any work into rtl-Support so far. It may work though,
but please don't blame me if it breaks.

WLM-Announce mailing list
WLM-Announce(a)lists.wikimedia.org
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wlm-announce
Hi everyone!
In this email I'd like to ask your attention for some maintenance. I know
this sounds boring, but it should make your life easier down the line. I'll
talk a bit about monument lists, and how to make sure that the
infrastructure that helps in categorization and validity checks works
smoothly in your country. Please make sure that for each country, at least
one person takes a good deep look at this. I'll try to answer the most
common situations. If you still have more questions, just hit 'reply' and
ask! If you find yourself in one of the situations below where we ask you
to get in touch with us then please file a task in Phabricator
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/edit/form/1/?project=wiki-…>
.
For our maintenance, we use the monuments database, where all lists of
monuments are collected (whether they are on Wikipedia or in Wikidata).
The monuments database
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database> serves two
main functions. The first is that it allows our busy robot ErfgoedBot to do
various tasks with the uploaded images such as categorising them and making
reports that local organisers can use to get the most out of the images.
The second is that it allows other developers to build tools, such as
maps (example
1 <https://tools.wmflabs.org/wlm-maps/> , example 2
<https://tools.wmflabs.org/map-of-monuments/>) that can either be used to
explore the monuments or can be of assistance during the competition itself.
The data in the monuments database is harvested from either a structured
lists of monuments on a Wikimedia site or from monuments items on Wikidata.
In either case the international team must first have been made aware of
the lists/Wikidata items.
I'm not sure if my country is in the monuments database. What do I do?
To find out if your country is in the database go to
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Statistics or
https://tools.wmflabs.org/heritage/api/ and look for your two letter
country code <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1#Current_codes> and
language code (i.e. language version of Wikipedia). If you find it then
your country is in the monuments database! If you don’t, and you believe
that it should, please get in touch.
Note that some countries may have multiple entries either for different
types of monuments or for different parts of the country.
We're transferring to Wikidata and didn't tell you yet. I thought it would
be fine right away. What do I do?
If you switched from lists of monuments to Wikidata and didn’t tell us, the
monuments database will still be based on those Wikipedia lists. Similarly
if you never had lists but put the monuments directly into Wikidata without
telling us, your data will not be in the monuments database.
For the monuments database to harvest the information from Wikidata you
will have to get in touch with us and provide us with the necessary
information to determine how to set up the harvesting. Please file a task
on Phabricator (see this example <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T174333>).
Once the harvest is up and running most of the Reports (see below) will be
generated as before.
If you have switched from lists to Wikidata, it is worth thinking about how
you allow photographers to find the monuments. Will you keep your old lists
in parallel? Can you make new lists automatically generated from Wikidata,
like this Australia example
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2019_in_Aus…>
(careful, some wikis may not allow such lists in the mainspace!). Can you
make use of Monumental <https://maps.wikilovesmonuments.org/>?
Our monuments have new IDs after moving to Wikidata
Did your monument IDs changed after moving to Wikidata (even if they have
just lost or gained a prefix)? Or do you now use only the Qid instead of
the old identifier? Then there are multiple things which may have to be
addressed.
The first is to ensure that your instructions for Photographers do not
reference the old IDs this year.
The commons template used to tag the images with the monument it depicts
will likely have to be updated to support the new IDs. This template is
automatically added by the Upload Campaign
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2019/Upload…>.
If the template is already in heavy use, because of images from previous
years, it might be easier to set up a new template and update the Upload
campaign (and Monuments database settings). Get in touch with us if this is
the case.
If you are allowing uploads using both the old lists and Wikidata you may
need two separate Campaigns and two separate commons templates. Get in
touch with us if this is the case.
My country is in the monuments database, but I have no idea what to do with
that information. What maintenance pages/reports should I check?
For each of these maintenance pages/Reports mentioned below the link goes
to a page on Commons which has more detailed information and links to the
individual page(s) for your country. Each type of page updates once per day.
If your country is not on the list but you think it should, then get in
touch.
Unused images
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Unused_images>
(lists and Wikidata)
This lists any images of monuments where that monument doesn't yet have an
image on the list [or an image statement on the Wikidata item if Wikidata
is used instead of lists].
The purpose of this list is to make sure the photographs taken for WLM
actually get used.
Action item: Add the image to the list or wikidata item, and the next day
it should disappear from the report.
Unknown fields
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Unknown_fields>
(lists only)
Every day ErfgoedBot processes your lists of monuments. If it encounters an
unexpected template parameter it make a report of it. While this page
seldom changes it’s worth having it on your watchlist, just in case.
The purpose of this list is to give organisers a quick way of spotting when
someone has accidentally broken one of the templates or to warn you about
new fields which the monuments database has not yet been made aware of.
Action item: Fix the broken template instances
Images without id
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Images_withou…>
(lists and Wikidata)
This lists any images which have been uploaded without providing an id
linking it to a specific monument. The bot will try to guess the id when
possible.
The purpose of this list is to make sure that each photograph taken makes
it clear which monument it depicts. The earlier these are caught the bigger
the chance that the photographer can add the missing information.
Action item: unidentified images could be disqualified. As national
organizer, it's up to you to either fix the missing number, contact the
uploader or to disqualify the image.
Hope this helps. Just reply if there are any questions.
Cheers,
André

Hi all,
(First email of several regarding available tooling)
The WLM international team maintains a statistics tool for Wiki Loves -like
contests.
It is ready for 2019. Data is refreshed every 15 minutes.
<https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiloves/monuments/2019>
(Currently there is only Ireland because Ireland already started a week
earlier :)
If you want to know more about the tools, there is documentation at
<https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tool:Wikiloves>
== What does this bring me? ==
The tool, beyond the “country race”, provides each competition with:
* A day-to-day table of image uploads and joiners (suploader who uploaded
their first image on that day). <
https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiloves/monuments/2019/Ireland>
* A sorted table of all uploaders, their upload count (as part of the
competition) and file usage, and their registration date <
https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiloves/monuments/2019/Ireland/users>
These two views may be helpful to gauge the health of your competition
== There's a problem! ==
If you notice any issue with the tool (bug, data missing, etc.), please
file me a task on Phabricator.
<

Hope this helps. Happy to answer any question.

WLM-Announce(a)lists.wikimedia.org
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wlm-announce
Hi all,
Like every year, we need to put together a good jury for Wiki Loves
Monuments 2019. It is a complicated and delicate process to come to a
balanced jury, and I would like to outline the criteria here, and to ask
for your input. I have agreed to take the lead on this process - but would
definitely welcome your input, and help.
As in the past years, I think it is important to aim once again for a jury
that as a whole is neutral and balanced in many ways. This means ideally:
* A mix of photography experts, heritage experts and Wikimedia experts
(aiming at a total size of 7-9)
* Geographically balanced so that no two jury members come from the same
country.
* Balance in many other ways imaginable (while at the same time, one can
never assure a balance in all aspects)
* The international jury members do not serve on a national jury for WLM
At the same time, there are some practical considerations:
* Jury members must be able to write and read English
* They must have the time to commit to judge 200-500 photos in three rounds
over a period of 3 weeks in November
* While jury members can participate in a local competition, their photos
cannot participate in the international finale
* Jury members should not participate in any national jury for 2019
(previous years is OK)
* It would be helpful if the juror would be willing to share their real
name for the jury report.
* Jury work is in a volunteer capacity.
Do you know someone who would make a good juror, please contact me
privately with the suggestion. At least let me know who the juror is, how I
could contact him/her and why they would make a good jury member (and
whether you have reason to believe they would accept the nomination, if
asked).
I will do my best to put together once again a qualified and diverse jury,
with your help!
Thank you in advance!
Best regards,
Erina Mukuta
