Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.
Aubrey
Dear WLM organizers and enthusiasts,
*tl;dr *
We need your help with collecting one story (per country) about the people
who participated in WLM in 2016 or in the previous years (a slight priority
for stories from 2016). While the story of every individual participating
in WLM is unique, there are stories that you know of and remember more
easily, and you bring them as anecdotes to your fellow Wikimedians,
friends, and families. We are eager to hear those stories. Please share
them with me and Jeff (cc-ed). Please do this by Friday, Nov. 11.
*Longer version*
*What?*
The WMF Communications team has offered to write a blog post about WLM (2-3
weeks?) before the announcement of the WLM international results. For
writing such a blog post, they will need stories from participants from
different countries. Currently, they're looking for 6-8 stories to be
shared as snippets in the blog post.
*Why?*
We are trying to create some momentum in the press to pick up the story of
the WLM when the international results are announced. A blog post a few
weeks before the final announcement may help us with that. Of course, we
are interested for press picking up the story for some specific reasons,
for example:
* We think that certain types of press coverage can benefit the winners in
the future and beyond WLM. (They may be recognized internationally, for
example.)
* Certain types of press coverage can bring much more visibility to the
work that all the volunteers and organizers in many parts of the world do,
to make WLM happen every year.
* And, press coverage can help us build a stronger presence/brand for WLM,
which can help WLM organizers with building stronger
partnership/sponsorship relationships the future years.
*When?*
>From the international team's perspective, the blog post can go out any
time between November 14 and 30. We will count on the Comms team's
expertise to choose the optimal time given their other constraints and
timelines.
*What we need from you?*
We need your help with collecting one story (per country) about the people
who participated in WLM in 2016 or in the previous years (a slight priority
for stories from 2016). While the story of every individual participating
in WLM is unique, there are stories that you remember more easily, and you
bring them as anecdotes to your fellow Wikimedians, friends, and families.
We are eager to hear those stories. Please share them with me and Jeff
(cc-ed).
If you have questions or comments, please let us know on or off-list. :)
Thank you!
Lily

Dear all
There are only 3 days left to help chose the Connected Open Heritage logo.
Connected Open Heritage is a project to improve and create knowledge about
the built cultural heritage of the world and make it available digitally,
with open and free licenses.

Thanks
John
Sending this to Wiki Loves Monuments list, too!
If you have technical needs for photo competitions, you can share a wish
simply by describing the problem. No high technical knowledge needed.
Best,
María

Subject: 2016 Community Wishlist Survey - Special call for programs and
affiliates!
To: wikimedia-ped(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Cc: Amanda Bittaker <abittaker(a)wikimedia.org>
Hello all,
Please see this year's Community Wishlist announcement below. This year,
"Programs and events" and "Chapters and affiliates" are special categories
that will be considered outside the top 10 wishes.
"After the voting phase, when we have the prioritized backlog, we plan to
> allocate 75% of our wishlist work to the top 10 wishes, and 25% to
> proposals important to smaller groups....So – yes, please come and post
> your proposals, even if you don't think you'll get into the top 10!" [1]
The proposal phase lasts until Nov 20th--this is the time to propose *and
refine* proposals. Check back often and collaborate with your program and
affiliate peers to craft the best proposals. So far, there are 3 Program
and events proposals and 0 Chapter and affiliate proposals.
A wish can't be voted on or selected unless it's created during this
proposal phase--if you want to see a tool, a metric, or extension, now is
the time to propose it. And please share with every program leader you
know! More people means more and stronger proposals.
[Cross posting to wikimedia-ped, education, and affiliates--sorry if you
see this multiple times, but it's really important and we don't want to
leave anyone out!]
All the best,
Amanda and María

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] 2016 Community Wishlist Survey
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi everyone,
The second annual Community Wishlist Survey starts today, and you're
invited to post proposals for projects that you'd like WMF's Community Tech
team to work on:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2016_Community_Wishlist_Survey
The Community Tech team builds features and makes changes that active
Wikimedia contributors want, and the Wishlist Survey sets the team's agenda
for the year.
The Wishlist Survey starts with a two-week proposal period, when
contributors from all Wikimedia projects are invited to post, discuss and
improve propsals. After that, there's a two-week voting period, when
everyone can post support-votes on the proposals that they think are
worthwhile. We end up with a ranked list of wishes, measured by the
participants' enthusiasm for each idea.
Community Tech is responsible for addressing the top 10 wishes on the list,
as well as some top wishes from smaller groups and projects that are doing
important work, but don't have the numbers to get their proposal into the
top 10. The Wishlist is also used by volunteer developers and other teams,
who want to find projects to work on that the community really wants.
So I hope that everybody comes and participates; it's an opportunity to set
the agenda for a Wikimedia Foundation product team.
We would also ask that you help us spread the word. Please do post on your
wikis and tell others this is happening, and that if they don't feel
comfortable writing in English, proposals are welcome in any language.

Dear all
As some of you may know UNESCO helped promote Wiki Loves Monuments this
year, we wrote a short overview of the project in the monthly UNESCO
visibility report (p22).

Hi everyone,
We (WLM Malta) are working on a small exhibition at a local arts centre
where we will be exhibiting (on a number of screens) all Maltese WLM 2016
entries together with the top 10 from each other country that participated
in WLM 2016. Unfortunately, we are finding it extremely time consuming to
individually caption each photo (author, name of photo, country etc.) using
Photoshop or other photo editing software.
Does anybody know whether there is any tool or batch processing application
that would help us process this quicker or somehow facilitate the process?
Or any other tips on how to make this process smoother?
Thanks for your help!
Neville

Hi all,
The international jurypool is now closed, and contains 392 images from 41
national competitions (if nothing comes up as problematic during import).
It was a great joy to see many of the beautiful nominated pictures. I thank
everyone who has submitted their nominees with care following the outlined
process.
We will be setting up the jury process now, and the international jury will
soon start with its work. Their process and membership is described here
<http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/jury/>. One final juror may be added
still.
We have not checked all nominees for validity. We will soon be importing
the images nominated into the jury tool. For this particular finale, we
will take extra care to import the version as it was 'live' by the end of
the competition in that country - and to ignore all edits made after that
point. If you're aware of exceptional situations where this would be
especially problematic (for example: the image was vandalized and replaced
just before closing, and reverted shortly after), please get in touch with
me privately.
We are planning to go through this process in a steady and thorough pace -
and finish the process by the end of November. We expect to announce the
winners officially in the first two weeks of December - depending on
challenges with regards to the jury report, press and checks & balances for
particular images.
I hope you're looking forward to the winners as much as we are!
With warm regards,
Lodewijk Gelauff
international jury coordinator, Wiki Loves Monuments 2016
