Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.
Aubrey
Hi all,
Like every year, we need to put together a good jury for Wiki Loves
Monuments 2016. It is a complicated and delicate process to come to a
balanced jury, and I would like to outline the criteria here, and to ask
for your input. I have agreed to take the lead on this process - but would
definitely welcome your input, and help.
As in the past years, I think it is important to aim once again for a jury that
as a whole is neutral and balanced in many ways. This means ideally:
* A mix of photography experts, heritage experts and Wikimedia experts
(aiming at a total size of 7-9)
* Geographically balanced so that no two jury members come from the same
country.
* Balance in many other ways imaginable (while at the same time, one can
never assure a balance in all aspects)
* The international jury members do not serve on a national jury for WLM
At the same time, there are some practical considerations:
* Jury members must be able to write and read English
* They must have the time to commit to judge 200-500 photos in three rounds
over a period of 3 weeks in November
* While jury members can participate in a local competition, their photos
cannot participate in the international finale
* Jury members should not participate in any national jury for 2016
(previous years is OK)
* It would be helpful if the juror would be willing to share their real
name for the jury report.
* Jury work is in a volunteer capacity.
Do you know someone who would make a good juror, please contact me
privately with the suggestion. At least let me know who the juror is, how I
could contact him/her and why they would make a good jurymember (and
whether you have reason to believe they would accept the nomination, if
asked).
I will do my best to put together once again a qualified and diverse jury,
with your help!
Thank you in advance!
Best,
Lodewijk
(international jury coordinator, WLM 2016)
Hi all,
If you are not a Tool Labs tool/service developer and/or you don't know
what Tool Labs is, you can safely stop reading this email here. :)
Tool Labs will have some scheduled maintenance down time during the month
of September (day/times will be announced ahead of time) and Yuvi (cc-ed)
has offered to create parallel services to assure continuous up time for
the most critical tools, APIs, etc. that are offered via Tool Labs and we
do not want to see down even for a few hours during the WLM competition.
Please let Yuvi and I know by 2016-08-27 if you know of or have developed a
critical service that meets the above description. Please provide the name
of the service/tool as well as a few lines of description as why it is
critical. If you're not sure whether a service is critical or not, just let
us know here or off-list and we will do the back-and-forth with you to
figure it out. :)
And to set expectations, Yuvi will only be able to provide parallel
services for at most 2 critical tools, API services, etc. (this will
require quite a bit of work on his end) so we will need to choose the most
critical ones.
Please let us know.
Best,
Leila, on behalf of the WLM international team

Hi all,
If you have or you know of a monument photo from one of the following
countries that is shared in public domain or with a CC0 license, or you own
the photo and are willing to give the WLM international team permission to
use it in our Twitter account to introduce the specific country, please get
back to me off list. :)
Thanks,
Leila

Hey,
there seem to be many portal pages. What about reducing the number a bit?
We could redirect this page for example to
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_upload/Part…
without too much trouble. (just a different layout)

Hi all,
If you are an organizer of Wiki Loves Monuments this year, please read on!
:)
For the majority of countries participating
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2016/Partic…>
in this year's WLM, the contest will start in 3 days. :) Here are a few
tips the international team would like to share with you:
* Please make sure you register for wlm-announce
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wlm-announce> mailing list.
This is the place where we send all the important announcements local
organizers should not miss. (The is a low traffic list.)
* Make sure that you go through this todo list
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2016/Organi…>,
if you already haven't. Assuming that you have your monument table(s)
ready, please focus on items 3, 4, and 5.
* Item 3 in the list above needs special attention. Note that the
international team recommends that the landing page for each country
accessed via the this list
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2016/Partic…>
be
in English (You can link from there to your local language(s) page) or have
at least one section in English that can help the international people
participate.
* Consider reaching out to your local media and encourage the coverage of
the contest's launch. See our earlier post about this here
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikilovesmonuments/2016-August/008248…>
.
* If you have questions, please use this list
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2016/Who%27…>
to contact us. If you need immediate response, please stop by freenode IRC,
channel #wikilovesmonuments (If we are there, we'd be happy to resolve your
questions immediately.)
And last but not least, don't forget to enjoy the process, especially for
those of you helping your country participate for the first time. :)

Hi all,
For those of you who are organizing WLM: please note that we now have a press
release template
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Richard_Nevell_(WMUK)/sandbox> that you
can share with your local media to get coverage of the launch of WLM 2016
in your country. While you should feel free to modify the press release for
your local audience according to your needs, we have specifically marked
the areas that we think you can update based on your country with a green
color in the text. And of course, you will probably want to translate the
press release to your local language.
Our special thanks to Richard Nevell for taking the lead and writing the
press release. :)

Hi all,
[If you are organizing WLM for the first time in your country, you can stop
reading this email here. Please reach out to me when you get to a point
that you should decide which jury tool to use in your jury process and I
will help you navigate. :) If you are not interested in detailed updates
about the jury tool discussion, you can also stop here. :).]
Our last update for the jury tool to this list was on 2016-08-08. Sorry for
the delay in updating this list with the status. We needed more time than
expected to get to this point.
*The past two weeks*
* We took the list of requirements for the jury tool
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Jury_tools/WLM_jury_tool_require…>
and
reviewed the code-base of 5 out of six jury tools
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Jury_tools>. We also reviewed
the UX (for juror and admin) by testing an instance of each of these tools.
* The goal of the above exercise was to find one tool that meets the
requirements for the jury tool set by the WLM international team or find a
tool that can, with a reasonable developer effort, get to a stage to meet
those requirements.
* We learned through this process that the current tools at their current
state don't meet the requirements (This is not a shortcoming of the tools.
Quite a few were designed for specific use-cases, and the requirements set
by the international team were broader than those use-cases). We also
learned that we cannot gather a 3-4 person team of developers around any of
the existing tools to meet the deadline for this year's contest (the
languages, environments, and the way code was developed were the main
blockers for finding these developers). The lack of such a team would make
the maintainability of the tool in the long run problematic as well.
*Decision*
Based on what we learned through the above exercise, our discussions, and
the needs communicated to us by some countries, we have decided to develop
a new jury tool for this year's contest. (And I promise you that we tried
really hard to not add another one. If you are curious, I'd be happy to
discuss this with you further off-list.)
*Next steps and what you can help with*
* Developer team: Mahmoud Hashemi, Stephen LaPorte (volunteer time), Yuvi
(volunteer time) have signed up to develop this new jury tool (for now
called montage). Yan Nasonov has volunteered to help where we need a hand.
* Jean-Fred and I will work closely with the team above to make sure the
tool is going to meet the requirements set by the WLM international team
for the jury tool.
* We will be able to give a more accurate timeline for when the tool will
be ready for this year's contest by 2016-08-31.
*The UX testing of the tool will need to happen in the coming weeks. If you
are a jury coordinator in your country this year, you are going to be a
juror, or you have worked in one of these capacities in the past years and
you can help us with UX testing, please message me off-list.
* You can find a high level design description (still in draft and being
updated) of the tool being built here
<https://github.com/hatnote/montage/blob/master/design.md>. If you'd like
to provide feedback, please reach out to me, or create a new issue here
<https://github.com/hatnote/montage/issues>. Please note that our priority
for this year is to have a basic and reliable tool, we won't be able to
accommodate all issues created, but they will help us for future
improvements in the tool.
*Thanks*
Last but not least, I'd like to thank all the people who came together to
help us get to this point and make an informed decision about the next
steps. This includes: David Narvaez, Ilya, Jean-Fred, Lodewijk, Mahmoud,
Paweł, Ruben, Stephen, Yan Nasonov, Yarl, and Yuvi. (I do hope I haven't
missed anyone.)
If you have any questions or comments, please let us know.
Best,
Leila, on behalf of the WLM international team
