Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.
Aubrey
Dear All,
We are happy to announce the Wikivoyage banner competition as part of
WLM-2018:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/banners
Same as last year, we invite the participants to convert their photos
into banner images used at Wikivoyage. These banner images introduce
travel destinations in a visual and attractive form. They can depict
panoramic views, important landmarks, or recognizable details. Page
banners can be easily cropped from the Wiki Loves Monuments photos.
## What's new this year? ##
1. The competition runs till October 31; this leaves the time to crop
the photos and upload the banners after the end of the main WLM period
2. There is a separate upload campaign (wlm-banners) that helps us to
structure the uploads
## We need your help! ##
1. First and foremost, please, spread the word about the banner
competition among your local community
2. Add information about the banner competition to your landing page.
Link to the Commons page mentioned above, or (even better) translate it
into your language
3. We create the lists of 'most needed destinations', namely, those that
have Wikivoyage articles but miss banner images so far. Please, let me
know if your local community may be interested in such a list. We shall
prepare one for your country in the beginning of September
4. As the upload campaign is new, we are still translating it into
different languages. Please, let me know what will be the best
translation for the field "Source image (Commons file that your banner
was cropped from)"
Please, send it to me personally and not to the mailing list. Thank you!
Your questions and comments are welcome!
Best wishes for your upcoming WLM,
Alexander
Hi all,
In the past week I have reviewed the infrastructure (special UploadWizard +
CentralNotice banner (=banner above Wikipedia/etc)) for all the
participating countries and all seem to work. If there are any errors or
questions, please let me know as early as possible!
(Please note: only during the contest period the WLM template and WLM
categories are added to the images, not in the days before.)
*What do you need to do?*
1. Please make sure your landing page has been added to:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/Landin…
Please make also sure a link to the English page bas been added there.
(without landing page there can't be a banner)
2. Please make sure your landing page is also linked in the banner above
the special upload wizard during the contest. This template can be found by
going to *Template:Upload campaign header wlm-..* and replacing the .. by
your country code. (This template is for your country only.)
Please link the English landing page on the */en* version of that page.
See for more details the requirements on
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/Organi…
*Deadline: 30 August at 23:59 UTC*
(So I have time to implement both the URLs for the landing pages and texts
in the CentralNotice banner. Providing the data after deadline may cause a
delay before implementation.)
*CentralNotice banner above Wikipedia*
This banner will be activated for your country by me and should be visible
for you within the 30 minutes after your local contest started
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/Upload…>
.
The banner will only be activated if at least the minimal information is
available for the participant on the website or landing page, which
includes the rules and how to participate.
Greetings,
Romaine
Hey,
If there are other countries besides Romania that want to encourage
video uploads, you should know that video2commons maintainer
{{u|Zhuyifei1999}} has done a tremendous job making it possible to
pre-fill the information template and other fields from the wizard/
This makes it (almost) as easy to correctly upload videos in any
format as it is to upload photos.
You can find details here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Video2commons#Is_there_a_wa…
I already implemented this for Romania, see the "video" links in the
image columns: https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lista_monumentelor_istorice_din_jude%C8%9Bul_…
. The Lua code that does the magic is available at
[[:ro:Modul:Monumente]].
HTH,
Strainu
Hi Johnattan,
Thanks for creating the Spanish version of the poster. I think it's
probably better to leave out the list of participating nations given that
it keeps changing until the competition starts.

Hi all,
The international team will be active on social media (Instagram, Facebook
and Twitter) throughout the month of September to promote WLM and to reach
out to a wider audience.
If your local campaign is planning to use social media please go to the
following page and fill out the details so we can coordinate with you:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/Social…
Please make sure to add a contact person we can reach out to for
coordination. The contact person does not need to be the same as the people
running the accounts but someone (e.g., from the local team) who has access
to the people managing the accounts. This page also helps us decide where
to focus our efforts.
Also, when posting on social media please make sure to tag us
(@wikilovesmonuments in FB and IG and @wikimonuments in Twitter) to make
sure we see your post.
Thanks,
Mohammad
Hi all,
Wiki Loves Monuments is coming up soon! I have been updating the
international website overview, and linked the landing pages that were
listed in the table on Commons. Please check the status of your country
here: https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/participate/
I have listed the following countries as 'likely participating': Finland,
Georgia, Ghana , Greece, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kosovo, Lebanon,
Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria , Palestine, Poland, Portugal , Romania, Spain,
Sweden, Syria, Tanzania.
If your country is listed under 'likely participating', that means that
there was something going on. I left a message for your country coordinator
here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/P…
. Please make sure that it is answered/is taken care of as soon as
possible!
I have considered the following countries as 'maybe participating' (they
will not be listed):
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Sudan, Zambia.
In the coming days, I will keep updating this overview.
Also, please check Romaines email earlier, and update
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/Landin…
Thank you!
Best,
Lodewijk
(international coordinating team)

Hi all,
Let's keep a record of press mentions for Wiki Loves Monuments 2018. As we
prepare for the start of this year's competition, I'm already starting to
see some coverage in the press. Nice work!
I started a page here:
