Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.
Aubrey
Hi all,
As we have stated in our annual plan [1], “currently, community members
must search many pages and places to stay informed about Foundation
activities and resources.” We have worked in the past two quarters to
create a single point of entry. We call it the Wikimedia Resource Center,
and its alpha version is now live on Meta Wikimedia:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Resource_Center
As the movement expands to include more affiliates and more programmatic
activities every year, newer Wikimedians are faced with lack of experience
in the movement and its various channels for requesting support. In order
to expand Wikimedia communities’ efforts, we want to provide easy access to
resources that support their very important work. The [[m:Wikimedia
Resource Center]] is a hub designed in response to this issue: it is
intended to evolve into a single point of entry for Wikimedians all over
the world to the variety of resources and types of staff support they may
need to develop new initiatives or also expand existing ones.
This version of the Resource Center is only the beginning. For phase two of
the project, we will enable volunteer Wikimedians to add resources
developed by other individuals or organizations to the Wikimedia Resource
Center, and in phase three, the Wikimedia Resource Center will include
features to better connect Wikimedians to other Wikimedians that can
support them.
We want to hear what you think about this prototype and our plans for it!
If you have comments about the Wikimedia Resource Center, you can submit
your feedback publicly, on the Talk Page, or privately, via a survey hosted
by a third party, that shouldn’t take you more than 4 minutes to complete.
A feedback button is on the top right corner on every page of the hub.
Looking forward to more collaborations!
Best,
María

Dear Wikipedians,
On 18 April, the International Day for Monuments and Sites is celebrated.
On that same day, the first edition of the UNESCO Challenge
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/UNESCO_Challenge> will also take place.
The challenge will last for a full month.
The UNESCO Challenge is a challenge co-arranged by UNESCO, the Swedish
National Heritage Board and Wikimedia Sverige, with the purpose to improve
Wikipedia articles on world heritage sites. UNESCO are going to release a
couple of thousand images (they will be added in this category
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_UNESCO_2017-04>),
and a lot of Open Access texts about the sites, which may be used in the
challenge.
Write in whatever language you like! You find the page for participation
and points registration here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/UNESCO_Challenge/Participants>.
Please help us spread the word to your communities!
Best,
John

Hi all,
We would like to encourage all countries that will participate in Wiki
Loves Monuments 2017 to sign up for it at the following link as soon as
possible:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017/Partic…
This information allows the international team to assist you with you
competition more effectively and in a timely manner. It is also a crucial
signal for teams outside of our project to plan their activities. For
example, Wikimedia Foundation's Fundraising team will need access to this
information to minimize campaign conflicts as much as possible.
This year, we've also introduced a tab called Organizers in Wiki Loves
Monuments landing page on Commons
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017/Organi…
where we'd like to encourage you to add the list of your team members and a
short description of what they do in your team, and if they don't mind,
their photo. :) This information is helpful for those from outside of the
Movement or the project who end up on that page and want to learn more
about your national competition, it also provides an opportunity for us to
get to know each other via this one page. :) Every year, there are more
than 150 national organizers that make Wiki Loves Monuments happen and it
would be great to know more about all of these amazing people. :)
If there are questions/comments, please send them our way. :)
Best,
Lily, on behalf of Wiki Loves Monuments international team

Hi all,
We're headed to another exciting year of Wiki Loves Monuments! As you may
have read before, the international team is full with ambition to make the
lives of the national organizers easier, including efforts to improve the
infrastructure and start a slow move towards including more monument data
in our shared Wikidata repository. Lily has presented our ambitions also in
Berlin, so the slides of her presentation here
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20170331_-_New_Ambitions_for_Wiki_L…>,
may be interesting to you as background.
Important initiatives include this year:
* Maintain the level of infrastructure and support from previous year
* Start the migration of monument data to Wikidata
* Enrich monuments data
* Make monuments data better discoverable through the Monumental tool
* Make it easier to monitor your campaigns
To realise these ambitions, we have requested a grant
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_interna…>
the Wikimedia Foundation for the international team. While the activities
outlined above are done in volunteer time, the grant helps set the
conditions and focus on what we're best at :)
As always, we warmly invite you to share your feedback on this on the
talkpage or directly with us. The grant request includes more elaboration,
and is currently under review.
If you have any questions with regards to the ambitions in general, or
other questions about this year's WLM, this mailing list is probably the
best place to ask.
With warm regards,
Lodewijk
Hello all!
Do you think September is still far, far away?, but you want to do
something with all the knowledge your contributors collected on the
monuments they visited?
Do like we do in the Netherlands and organize a writing competition
<https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Monumenten_Cha…>
!
In the month of May, the Dutch team is organizing a writing challenge on
Dutch National Monuments on the Dutch language Wikipedia. We contacted our
sponsors early this year and asked them if they wanted to send in a small
prize, in addition to sponsoring the photo competition in September. And
they did!
We designed a simple scoring system (100 points for each new article, 50
points for every 1000 new bytes, 10 points for each used picture of a
monument) and thanks to Multichill and Wikidata, we have a list of
suggestions on monuments for people to write about.
If you know Dutch, of course you're free to join in!
If you want to organize something similar and need help, feel free to ask:
it's not that hard.
Regards,
Ciell
I've told Jcb about this discussion
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Jcb#Unexplained_removals_of_li…>,
reminded them to check for license blanking vandalism and asked if they can
check the deleted edits of the license blanker in case they were able to
get any other files deleted that way.
I'm not an admin on commons, but where I am an admin it would be expected
that you would check the history of a file before deleting it.

Please accept our apologies for cross-posting this message.
On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Board Elections Committee, I am pleased to announce that self-nominations are now being accepted for the 2017 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Elections.[1]
The Board of Trustees (Board) is the decision-making body that is ultimately responsible for the long-term sustainability of the Wikimedia Foundation,[2] so we value wide input into its selection. More information about this role can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>. Please read the letter from the Board of Trustees calling for candidates here: <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>.
The candidacy submission phase will last from April 7 (00:00 UTC) to April 20 (23:59 UTC) and occurring on Meta-Wiki at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>
We will also be accepting questions to ask the candidates from April 7 to April 20. You can submit your questions on Meta-Wiki at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_o…>
Once the questions submission period has ended on April 20, the Elections Committee will then collate the questions for the candidates to respond to beginning on April 21.
The goal of this process is to fill the three community-selected seats on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. The election results will be used by the Board itself to select its new members.
The full schedule for the Board elections is as follows. All dates are inclusive, that is, from the beginning of the first day (UTC) to the end of the last.
* April 7 (00:00 UTC) - April 20 (23:59 UTC): Board nominations
* April 7 - April 20: Board candidates questions submission period
* April 21 - April 30: Board candidates answer questions
* May 1 - May 14: Board voting period
* May 15-19: Board vote checking
* May 20: Board result announcement goal
In addition to the Board elections, we will also soon be holding elections for the following roles:
* Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC)
** There are five positions being filled. More information about this election can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Funds_D…>.
* Funds Dissemination Committee Ombudsperson (Ombuds)
** One position is being filled. More information about this election can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Funds_D…>.
Please note that this year the Board of Trustees elections will be held before the FDC and Ombuds elections. Candidates who are not elected to the Board are explicitly permitted and encouraged to submit themselves as candidates to the FDC or Ombuds positions after the results of the Board elections are announced.
More information on this year's elections can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017>.
Please feel free to post a note about the election on your project's village pump. Any questions related to the election can be posted on the talk page on Meta, or sent to the election committee's mailing list, <board-elections AT wikimedia.org>.
On behalf of the Election Committee,
Katie Chan, Chair, Board Election Committee
