Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.

Hi all,
Who's going to Wikimania this year? Leave a note on
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Attendees/Wiki_Loves_Monuments if
you are going and are interested in Wiki Loves Monuments, or have
experience with it.
I'm also looking for some inspiring case studies to share during our
session - especially from outside Europe. Shoot me an email if you have one!

Hi lists
Wikimedia UK is supporting the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest again
this year, and I am looking for 25-30volunteers to help review and
filter the entries.
The contest finishes at the end of September, with reviewing and judging
taking place immediately after that. We normally have several rounds of
reviewing during October, enabling us to reduce the expected 10,000+
entries down to long list of a few hundred from which the winners are
selected by our panel of judges.
You'd need to be able to commit to a minimum of 4-5 hours online
reviewing, during the first two weeks of October. As reviewing is done
online, volunteers can be based anywhere in the world and you don't need
to have any UK connections. We’re not looking for expert photographers,
but you should have a basic ability to be able to distinguish a good
photograph from a poor or mediocre one. Training in the online reviewing
software is available.
The contest website is here: https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.uk/
If you are able to help, or if you'd like more information, please let
me know.
Regards
Michael

Hi everyone,
About ten years ago the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE,
Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands) made available the data
about all rijksmonumenten (national heritage sites in the Netherlands).
This was used to create lists of Rijksmonumenten on Wikipedia which was
the starting point for Wiki Loves Monuments.
The RCE now published all this data (and more) as linked open data, see
https://linkeddata.cultureelerfgoed.nl/home (unfortunately all in
Dutch). That opens up all sorts of exciting new possibilities. That made
me wonder: Do any of the other heritage organizations public linked open
data or is the RCE the first to do this?

Hi all,
please note: tomorrow (15 July) is another deadline for rapid grants at the
Wikimedia Foundation. After that, you can't submit for two whole weeks.
While August will have some extra focus on WLM in rapid grants, please
don't wait for that if you can do it now! Processing takes time (rapid is
only relative).
You can submit rapid grants between 500 and 2000 dollars.

Best,
Lodewijk

Well, Denmark is all signed up. We still have to clean up some outdated
monument lists, but I hope this gets travellers snapping photos now. :)
I copied the upload link from some other countries, but is it correct to
assume that someone in the organising WLM group has to actually create this
and that it will not be active until 1 September 2019? I did not put any
link on the DA and EN pages because it shouldn't be active now.
Cheers and good luck to everyone!

Hi everyone,
It's that exciting time of the year again, Wiki Loves Monuments is
getting started! I know several of you have already started, but if
you haven't: this is a great time to do so!
The idea behind Wiki Loves Monuments is to invite the general audience
in your country to photograph built heritage and share it with the
world through Wikimedia Commons. We do that through a federated
competition, which means that the national teams are key to our
success: they organize the national competitions. At the end of the
process, the national juries can nominate up to 10 photos to the
international jury. The international jury will then consider those
photos once again, and select the international winners. We will
announce the prizes for the international winners later.
If you are a group of Wikimedians, a chapter or user group that is
interested in participating (again) this year, then please sign up!
You can find a list of countries that has already done so
here:https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2019/P…
If you want to know how to organize, please reach out to one of the
members of the international team
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2019/Organi…>.
You can also leave a message on the help desk
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Help_desk>
or send an email to the public mailing list
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesmonuments>. We
do have a fair amount of documentation
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Documentati…>
available, but some of it may be outdated (we appreciate any help in
improving it!).
Like last year, we've also added a tab called 'Organizers' in Wiki
Loves Monuments landing page on Commons:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2019/Organi…
We'd like to encourage you to add your name and those of your team
members with a short description to the list. This information is
helpful for those from outside of the Movement or the project who end
up on that page and want to learn more about your national
competition, it also provides an opportunity for us to get to know
each other via this one page. :) Every year, there are more
than 150 national organizers that make Wiki Loves Monuments happen and
it would be great to know more about all of these amazing people. :)
We will also have a presence at Wikimania this year, and organize a
meetup. Please keep an eye out!
If you like to stay informed, make sure you're a member of our
discussion mailing list
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesmonuments>
(wikilovesmonuments at lists.wikimedia.org
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wlm-announce> ). The
most important announcements are also sent to our announcement mailing
list
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wlm-announce>: if you
don't have much capacity for emails, please at least make sure
multiple people in your team are subscribed to that! Feel free to
forward this announcement to anyone you think may not have received
it.
If you have any questions, please reach out! We're here to help each other.
Lets have a great competition again :) Especially as this will be the
10th edition since we started on this journey back in 2010!
Best,
Lodewijk
on behalf of the international team

Hello all,
Hope this email finds you well. We are sending this message to select
community mailing lists and all previous recipients of Wikimedia Foundation
Rapid Grants.
As you know the Rapid Grants Program
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid> [1] has played an
important role in helping our communities to grow. The number of grants we
have given out grew by 30% between FY16 -17 to this fiscal year, and they
grew by 55% when measured by the total amount disbursed. (See the spending
analysis
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Resources/Grants_spending_analysis>
[2] for reference.*)
While communities have valued these flexible funding opportunities, on our
part, it hasn’t been easy to measure and track their impact. We therefore
will be implementing a number of changes in Fiscal Year 19/20, starting *August
1 2019*, to sharpen the focus and impact of rapid grants, whilst at the
same time maintaining the quick and flexible funding options for community:
1) In the months specified below, we will prioritize support to *contests
and campaigns* which have been an exciting source of growth in editorship,
innovative participation and content generation by communities. These
months will be solely dedicated to different contests and campaigns
throughout the year:
- *August*: only receiving proposals for *Wiki Loves Monuments*
- *September*: only receiving proposals for *Awareness Grants*
(campaign)
- *December*: only receiving proposals for *Wiki Loves Africa *
- *January*: only receiving proposals for *Art + Feminism* (campaign)
- *March*: only receiving proposals for *Wiki Loves Earth*
2) Outside the months specified above, proposals are welcomed in all other
categories: edit-a-thons, contests, photowalks, general promotion
campaigns, and video campaigns. For added flexibility, we will also
consider proposals outside of these categories, such as software
development. However, we will no longer be providing rapid grants for
travel support, equipment purchase or meetups.
3) We will evaluate each batch of grants once a month and accept the best
proposals in alignment with the Wikimedia Foundation’s medium-term goals.
We will share the evaluation for the Rapid Grants Program that led us to
sharpen the focus for the program once the evaluation is completed by
September 30, 2019. In addition to these changes, we’ve also considered
comments around Wikimedia Foundation Rapid Grants eligibility criteria and
have clarified these criteria. Please take the time to re-familiarize
yourselves with the Wikimedia Foundation Rapid Grants Guidelines and
Criteria <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Learn> [4]
page.
The Wikimedia Foundation’s Medium-term
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Medium-term_plan_2019>
[3] plan goals are set out here for information.
If you have any questions, please email us at <rapidgrants(a)wikimedia.org>.
Best regards,
Woubzena
*Please note that we have not yet put out the final FY 2018-19 numbers and
we’re basing this calculation based on up to date internal numbers of 184
grants and $270,194.
