Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.
Aubrey
Hi all,
TL;DR
* We have developed a map feature for Wiki Loves Monuments 2017.
* If you are a local organizer, please read the details below to learn more
about what it is, what you can expect, ... :)
As you may know, the international team has been working on a series of
projects to make more of your more than 1.4 million monuments and the data
associated with them discoverable. To this end, we have worked on a series
of projects in the past months:
* With WMSE we have worked on Wikidata migration of monuments lists.
* For data already on Wikidata and geotagged, we have developed Monumental
which is the tool targeted at exposing the data we have and the ones we
don't have. :) This email is about this tool.
In the past week, we have put Monumental[0] in front of testers and the
overall feedback that we have got is that the tool is intuitive to use, it
is fun to explore the monuments using it, and it provides a smoother
experience for uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons. With this feedback,
we decided to set up Monumental for Wiki Loves Monuments during this year's
contest. This is an experimental tool and this email is going to provide
some details about what you can expect from the tool. We are also open to
hear your other comments on this front. :)
==How can I access Monumental?==
While Monumental is a stand-alone tool, there is a Wiki Loves Monuments
version of it that lives in maps.wikilovesmonuments.org [Please do not
share this link widely until we are ready to announce the page.] We still
have a couple of fixes we need to make to the tool.
== What if some monuments are missing in my city/country? ==
The maps on maps.wikilovesmonuments.org will only show monuments that are
listed on Wikidata, i.e.,
* It won't show monuments that are not (yet) on Wikidata,
* If a monument is in Wikidata but it's not geotagged (with P625 [1]), it
won't be exposed via this tool for now.
* If a monument is in Wikidata and geotagged, it will be exposed as long as
it has any value for property P1435 (heritage designation)[2] OR any value
for property P2186 (WLM identifier)
== What if I want to "fix" any data on maps.wikilovesmonuments.org? ==
All of the data comes from Wikidata, so you can make any corrections (or
improvements) on Wikidata directly.
== What if I see monuments on maps.wikilovesmonuments.org that aren't on my
country's list? ==
There may be a few reasons that monuments appear on the map that aren't
eligible for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments in 2017 -- the local
organizers may decide to exclude certain monuments from the competition. To
avoid any misunderstandings, and yet to allow people to contribute photos
of monuments (even if they're not eligible to participate as part of this
year's contest), we will show a banner right above the upload link. --
example https://maps.wikilovesmonuments.org/object/406972
* If you are the local organizer for a country and you want this banner to
be removed for your country's monuments, i.e., if you want to accept any
monuments photo submission as part of your contest and via
maps.wikilovesmonuments.org, please contact us. We can remove this message
from the upload pages for your country.
* Everyone else, the message will be there and it is the responsibility of
the user to check the local rules and figure out if their upload is
eligible for the local competition.
* If you are the organizer for Ireland, Poland, Sweden or UK: you are
guaranteed that uploades via maps.wikilovesmonuments.org are uploads for
your campaign and they all should be considered. We do not show the warning
message in the upload pages corresponding to your monuments.
== How can I find photos uploaded via the map? ==
They will all appear in Category:Uploaded with Monumental.[4]
* If monument in Wikidata got value for P373 (Wikimedia Commons category),
image will be added to this category
* If not, picture will be added to category "Cultural heritage monuments in
X", where X is country name.
Comments and questions are welcome! :)
Best,
Lily, on behalf of Wiki Loves Monuments international team

Hi all,
If you have applied for Rapid Grants [1] or you are considering to
apply for one to support your Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 campaign,
please read on. Everyone else, you can safely stop here.
At least two countries are affected by the delays in processing Rapid
Grants: Ghana [2] and Greece [3]. We want you to know a few things:
* The international team is heavily discouraged to apply for grants
for emergency cases like this, with the reasoning that WMF can process
Rapid Grants in a week.
* We are going to contact WMF regarding these two country's requests
to ask for immediate attention to these cases.
* If you have applied for Rapid Grants for your Wiki Loves Monuments
campaig or you are planning to do so, we need to hear from you. Please
email on or off-list with the name of your country so we can include
that information in our communications.
* Everyone has the best intentions to help each other. The resources
are limited, and things get dropped (not trying to justify here but to
say that we should all have empathy for each other in cases like
this:).
This is a very unfortunate situation for the organizers and our global
efforts for Wiki Loves Monuments 2017. This being said, I'd like to
ask everyone to exercise patience, lend a hand to each other where you
can, and allow the international team to escalate and hopefully
resolve this issue in a timely manner.
Best,
Lily

Hi all,
We're a few hours away from kicking off in the first countries! Very
exciting of course.
While we're aware that some countries are working hard against the
deadline, we have to work with the information available. We noticed that
some countries don't have a functional landing page yet, and that means
that they are not ready to receive thousands of people on their landing
page. We don't want to send all those people there just to get lost.
For the countries where we identify that issue, we will put their
competition 'on hold'. That means that the upload campaigns will become
active and experienced Wikipedians who know where to go, can start
uploading on September 1. However, we will not activate the banners on top
of the Wikimedia projects yet. The end of the competition will not be
extended because of this and remain the same.
Romaine is in charge of this, and will make the final determination if a
banner is ready - on behalf of the international team. We're keeping an
overview of the countries that are on hold on the talkpage of the list of
participating countries
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017/P…>
.
We try to ping the coordinators, but please do check if your country is
affected in the next hours.
We encourage everyone to fix these problems as soon as possible, so that we
can go live without too much delay. You can find the requirements for the
landing pages here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017/Landin…
Also if you're not affected: if you want to help these countries (if you
speak their language), please feel free to help out! That is much
appreciated.
Best,
Lodewijk
(on behalf of the international team)

Hi all,
[Please do not share the following links on social media or other
platforms before September 1. We are planning to share the video
broadly on that day and as part of the efforts to raise awareness
about Wiki Loves Monuments. We are sharing them with you now and below
to give you enough time to translate them to your language if you
choose to. :)]
We've produced a short video with English-language titles to promote
Wiki Loves Monuments to those who might be unfamiliar with the contest
here:

YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnzQf9VbH9g

Here is a version of the video above without burned-in English
language titles, so that you can add titles in your language and
better address your audience:

Vimeo:

We hope you enjoy watching it and find it useful for raising awareness
about the contest in your communities. :)
We'd like to take this opportunity to thank Victor Grigas who worked
Victor-style (passionately, with clear vision, high focus, and high
efficiency:) to create this video. There were only 106 minutes between
the time we approached Victor and when we had a real first version of
the video in our inboxes (I went back to my emails and fact-checked
this;). Also, we'd like to thank Jacob Rogers for helping us with
pushing the video out of the door in time for this year's contest.
Enjoy!

Dear organizers and enthusiasts,
If you become aware of press mentions and coverage of Wiki Loves
Monuments during this year's campaign, please help us collect the
information about them at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017/Press_…
Stephen just discovered the first press mention and we created the
page inspired by that.
Best,
Lily

Hi all,
If you are not a Tool Labs tool/service developer and/or you don't
know what Tool Labs is, you can safely stop reading this email here.
:)
TL;DR
* There are some major projects in progress that could cause some
amount of disruption to Tool Labs tool/services.
* To stay on top of the schedule for such disruptions and/or to
provide feedback when you can, please make sure you're subscribed to
lab-l and/or labs-announce.
Longer and more:
As part of the preparation for Wiki Loves Monuments 2017, we reached
out to Wikimedia Cloud Services team [1], cc-ed, to give a heads up
that Wiki Loves Monuments is happening ;), we'd like to know more
about scheduled maintenance on Tool Labs between September 1 and
December 7 (which is high activity time for this community), and hear
if we (the developers of WLM tools and services) can get special
support during this period from the team. Here is what we learned and
we'd like to share with you:
* The team doesn't currently have concrete plans for major maintenance
in this period, however,
* they do have several major projects in progress that could cause
some amount of disruption as they reach the deployment stage. These
include:
** migration to a new cluster of wiki replica databases,
** migration of NFS dumps to a new cluster of backend servers,
** and a complete replacement of the networking infrastructure used for
the OpenStack virtual machines.
* All planned maintenance around these projects will be announced on
the labs-announce mailing list [2].
* All developers and those interested to get updates are encouraged to
subscribed to labs-announce and/or labls-l [3].
Regarding support from the team if something goes wrong:
We are asked to get support through: Phabricator tasks, the labs-l mailing
list, and asking questions on the #wikimedia-cloud irc channel.
One note that we also mentioned on this list last year: If you do have
critical services that cannot tolerate downtime, please do let me
know. I'd like to have an inventory of such services and keep an eye
on them, please. :)

Hi all,
Thank you for your patience while we were finalizing the awards for
Wiki Loves Monuments 2017. You can find more details about this year's
awards at :
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/awards/
We will start updating the relevant pages on wiki soon. If you spot
something somewhere that is not updated, be blod! :)
This year, we are especially grateful to an anonymous donor who has
allowed us to create a major award for the winner of the contest at
the international level. As a volunteer movement and community, we
rely on people to join us and donate their time, energy, grants, and
sometimes items to make Wiki Loves Monuments a stronger contest. :) We
are also thankful to our partner Europa Nostra for their continuous
support and the award they have dedicated to the winner of the
contest.
In the coming weeks, we will continue to look for ways to improve the
awards, so changes may happen to that page, but they will be for the
better (or at least, this is what we are aiming for:).
For most of you, we are one week away from the start of the contest.
We are super thrilled to support you in what you are doing to make a
successful Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 happen.
Thank you! :)
