Good evening Wikimaniacs!
We now have a distributed effort by multiple volunteers in Hong Kong to
upload all the video footage from Wikimania 2013 onto YouTube. If you gave
a presentation or workshop at Wikimania (and haven't requested that we
don't video you), keep an eye on WMHK's YouTube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/WikimediaHK
The plan is that all videos will be available by the end of February.
We'd be grateful if you can watch your video and see if there are any
defects, because we can't watch every second of the uploaded videos to
check them!

Hi,
I know it may be too early to ask that, but I promise to send another
notification related this issue in the coming months :)
We started last year to make the Wikimania costs more transparent.
Wikimania is our biggest and the most expensive project. To ask our self
"how much Wikimania costs" we can't only look on the project budget, as the
total cost involve also scholarships (from WMF and chapters)
and delegations of the chapters and the WMF.
We have tracking pages on Meta about Wikimania
2011<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2011/Budget>and
Wikimania
2012 <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2012/Budget> (sadly the
organizer team of 2012 didn't updated their costs till now...), and I
opened a new page for Wikimania
2013<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2013/Budget>
.
So again, I know to some of you this is too early to put the costs
(although the size of the chapters and WMF delegation is known and could be
update also now) - but if you can, do it now. If now, remember to do it
what you have the numbers.
The data requested is your chapter\wmf
delegation<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2013/Budget#Delegations>
and
the number of scholarships<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania/Scholarships/2013>your
chapters gave.
Thanks,
Itzik
Hi all,
Scholarship applications for Wikimania 2014 in London are now being
accepted. Applications are open until the end of the day UTC on 17 February.
Wikimania 2014 scholarships is an award given to an individual to enable
them to attend Wikimania in London from 6-10 August, 2014.
Only a single type of scholarship will be available from the Wikimedia
Foundation for Wikimania 2014. A Wikimedia Foundation scholarship will
cover the cost of an individual's round-trip travel costs as arranged by
the Wikimedia Foundation travel agency, shared accommodation as arranged
by the Wikimedia Foundation, and registration for Wikimania.
Applicants will be rated using a pre-determined selection process and
selection criteria by the Scholarship Committee, who will determine
which are successful. To learn more about Wikimania 2014 scholarships,
please visit <https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scholarships>.
To apply for a scholarship, fill out the application form on
<http://scholarships.wikimedia.org/apply>. It is highly recommended that
applicants review all of the material on the Scholarships page and the
associated FAQ before submitting an application.
If you have any question, please contact
<wikimania-scholarships(a)wikimedia.org> or leave a message on
<https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Scholarships>.

Hi all,
I received this question about visas for Iranian citizens and am passing it
along:
As it stands now, UK visa requirements for Iranian citizens is to have a
bank account with (on average) 10000 USD or equivalent in the last six
months, plus proof of ownership of a property in Iran, the documents have
to be translated and notarized.
Most of the volunteers interested in getting scholarship for WM or trying
to arrange travel on their own are mostly young people who do not satisfy
either conditions, is there something that the UK team can do about that?
can they get confirmation that if they apply these requirements will be
waived or something similar?
Thanks!

two weeks after my reply, i get an answer that it was rejected by a list
moderator because it was 'too big' (I was unaware of any attachments?).
Anyway, hope my comments still make sense. Trying to re-send it now from
another address.

I recall that at wikimania 2006/2007/2008 there were poster sessions too,
and that I was a bit disappointed about them. They were far away from where
everything was happening, you had to actively go there and nobody was
really motivated to read them.
So if a poster thingy is introduced again, I suggest to think about that as
well - how to make it interactive, and how to only have interesting
posters. Because if there are five boring posters, everyone will already
walk away and never get to the awesome hard-work-posters on the other side
of the room. I would have no objection against a threshold to ensure each
poster is interesting and well designed.
All in all I think it would help if
* Not every poster is accepted, but only interesting ones
* There is some help in designing them in a way that they are clear,
interesting, readable
* Some minimum design guidelines are created (for people who never make
posters, or only those boring scientific ones - sorry scientists, but you
know it's true for many of them...)
* Some interaction incentive, both for the presenter and the viewer. Maybe
combine them with a discussion session, have a prize for the best poster or
give free cookies. Be creative.
Anyway, just some thoughts :)

Maybe booklet was the wrong word. Leaflet? Flyer?
Already working on the Samsung thing, I hope to do some really cool stuff
with digital signage!

If I install the appropriate Firefox plugin, I see a "download" link. Does the TOS say that isn't a valid download link?
IANAL, but I suppose they could say that wasn't "displayed by YouTube" and then we get into the semantics and details of how a link is displayed and -- especially if you are a naive user using someone else's computer with the plugin installed -- how you can tell if the link you see is "displayed by YouTube."
Oh, but wait. I think this rabbit hole is already too deep. I'll stop digging.

We did contemplate, at one point about two weeks ago, that we shouldn't
even attempt to upload the videos from Hong Kong, and just mail the 2TB
external HDD with the raw footage to WMF or WMUK. Now that Andrew pointed
out that downloading and keeping a copy of YouTube videos violates their
TOS regardless of licence, I guess we could've just given up back then. I
guess the best course of action now is that we continue uploading and
editing the videos on YouTube. If someone at WMF or WMUK is willing to
render and edit the videos again from scratch, we'll send them the HDD
after we're done here.
What do you mean by edit? Are we just talking about combining the chunks
and then rendering? If so, that's doable. The advantages of sending it to
WMF however is that someone there have direct access to the server and can
upload quicker / accept bigger file size.

Hello, today I and Martin have polished the scholarship vision/program
for our Wikimania 2015 bid:
Considering a background and aiming for a long-term impact on the
Wikimedia mission, we propose the following principles: Transparency;
Accountability and self-reflection; Grassroot; Efficiency and fairness;
Innovation. From those we identify 4 external needs and 8 goals.
Please read the proposal and edit boldly or comment on talk page or
wherever. Keep in mind it's still a draft, not the official WMIT
proposal yet. While the bids warm up and the Wikimania discussion is
still quiet, we think it's useful for everyone to focus the discussion
on some specific areas in advance. (And if all bids adopt our idea of
scholarships, all the better!)
