Looking over the plans in the timeline section of that page, it looks like
there isn't a general community input section, where people unaffiliated
with the bidding or judging process can say things as basic as "I would
attend the proposed London Wikimania but would not attend the proposed
Arusha one". In fact, there doesn't even appear to be a section in the
criteria that accounts for whether the community at large is interested in
or opposed to specific bids or bid locations. I realize that the bidding
process is not a democracy, and that such a selection criteria would convey
significant advantages to cities/countries that have a large number of
users or are especially effective at mobilizing users to comment, but if
many more users want to go to one location over another, shouldn't that be
taken into account?

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Introducing Ellie Young as Conference Coordinator
To: wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org, Ellie Young <eyoung(a)wikimedia.org>
Hi all,
Please join me in welcoming Ellie Young, who is taking on the role of
Conference Coordinator as an annual contract with WMF.[1]
As you may know, WMF's support for Wikimania in recent years has been
spread across a variety of staff members who have other core
responsibilities. With this new contract, we're creating a single point of
contact to act as liaison between WMF and the Wikimania organizing team, to
ensure that we're able to provide the host team with focused support where
help from WMF is needed.
Ellie brings with her a lot of experience in event planning for open
culture communities. She worked as Executive Director of USENIX
Association for over 20 years, where she and her team supported several
international conferences hosted by volunteers each year.[2] She also
currently serves on The Ada Initiative's Board of Advisors and has been an
activist for the democratization of educational materials most of her life.
Fun things we’ve learned about Ellie: Both sets of her grandparents helped
build the Panama Canal, and each generation since has had a pilot or two
doing transits of the ships. She has been to every country in Latin America
and the Caribbean except Brasil. You can often catch her hiking in the SF
East Bay Hills with her adorable mini-poodle, Jack.
As Conference Coordinator, Ellie will be facilitating and supporting the
work of the Wikimania host team and making sure there is good continuity
and knowledge-transfer as the conference moves to new hosts year-over-year.
She is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and will be sometimes working
from the SF office (sitting on the 3rd floor near HR). Ellie would like to
hear from you on all things Wikimania, so please do stop by or email her
anytime!
Huge thanks to all staff and volunteers who helped us craft this role and
interview candidates.
Welcome, Ellie!

Dear Wikimaniacs,
Hello again from the 2013 local team for a break from the Wikimania 2014
bid discussions!
Every candidate applying for Wikimania 2013 scholarships should have
received an email in the past two weeks saying either their application was
unsuccessful, or their application is still being considered.
Commiserations to all unsuccessful candidates - we hope we can still see
you at Wikimania and around the Wikimedia projects.
This year we received over 1200 applications for scholarships; about 700
made it past the first round. It is expected that a total of about 125 WMF
scholarships and 75 chapter scholarships will be allocated to the best
applicants among applicants who advanced past the first round. Candidates
should hear about the decisions regarding their applications by the end of
April.
Don't hesitate to contact the Wikimania 2013 local team at *wikimania-p
[at] wikimedia.hk* or the scholarship team at *wikimania-scholarships [at]
wikimedia.org* .
With best wishes,
Deryck Chan
Global engagement coordinator, Wikimania 2013 / Wikimedia Hong Kong
On behalf of the Wikimania 2013 local team and scholarship committee
Dear Wikimaniacs & Non-Wikimaniacs
This is your local team lead for this years conference in Hong Kong.
As the local team pretty understands everyone's anticipation to the
conference
so we will try to keep you informed about the latest update of the
conference
whenever they can be release to the public
Here are a few piece of info I think you will be interested to know
*a. Hostel accommodation*
One thing I am sorry to tell you that, the dorm of PolyU is not available
due to renovation in this summer.
So we have arrange the dorm of another university in Kowloon, Baptist
University for scholarship recipients (whether WMF or Chapter scholarship)
However, the BU dorm is not in the walking distance to PolyU,
but it is still in a very convenient location, just two MTR stations away
from PolyU
and we will also arrange shuttle in the morning, to getting most people to
the venue.
We estimate there are still a number of beds that can be available as
hostel options,
so the local team will start accepting reservation for these extra beds
when the scholarship recipients start getting letter of notifications.
We will only accept those reservation request from those who are not
supported by any scholarship or any Wikimedia entities,
and also we may consider reserving some beds for Wikipedians/wikimedians
only
For the location of the new dorm, you may visit this website:
http://sa.hkbu.edu.hk/ugh/hallmap.html
More information will be available in the official wiki
*b. Parties*
We are basically settled on the choice of venue for both welcoming parties
and closing parties
however we cannot reveal too much, either we are still negotiation, or
revealing may lead to some extra cost.
For the opening party, please pray for a good weather, as you can enjoy the
famous harbour view from the venue.
and for the closing party, considering some feedbacks we will switch to a
Beach party, rather than Beach barbecue
the location is also different from the one we stated in the bid
however, you can still experience the different landscape of Hong Kong
(suppose you never see or even expect)
If you have any questions, please feel free to keep asking in the current
available means
like here, or the wiki page, we may try to be active on IRC, but due to the
time difference.... we cannot be always online while you're online
lOOking forward to seeing you here in August

*Lend us a simple edit, you're a Wikipedian!*
Hi,
Do we have live streaming of wikimania 2013? If this option is available
how can I subscribe to it?
Also where can I see the recorded sessions?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Thanks and Regards,
Srinivasan D
All,
To confirm, the candidate bids to host Wikimania 2014 are:
* Arusha, Tanzania
* London, UK
The bids now have two weeks (until 23:59 UTC on 17 March 2013) to
finalise all major information on their pages, responding to questions
from the jury and the community, and prepare for the
question-and-answer phase.
Good luck to both bids!
On behalf of the Wikimania 2014 Jury,
Yours,

Dearest Wikimaniacs,
(this is mostly for past organizers, but also attendees and
information-gatherers...)
I am once again (still?) on a drive to organize information about past
Wikimanias in a comprehensible, easy-to-find format. Please help!
See the bolded pages here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania/past
lots of information is missing from all of the years. Links to reports are
fine; I'm just trying to make everything findable in one place. If you see
fields that need to be added please do so as well.
Thanks,
Phoebe

I would very much like to attend Wikimania, but have no idea if I am going
to be able to, because I don't know my schedule that far forward. Would it
be possible to register now and reserve my spot, and then pay when I arrive
(or cancel some time in July if I can't make it)?
Related: If I do go, I'd like to run a workshop or two there, however I
can't be sure that I'll know my schedule well enough to make the 30 April
deadline.
What should I do?
