Hi folks,
Registration is now open, and I'd like to get the "in crowd" processed
before the onslaught brought on by the press release. If there are
any fundamental problems be encountered in the process, I'd rather you
guys find them, rather than some random dude who read about Wikimania
in a magazine.
So by all means, register, but only if your schedule is firm and
you're prepared to shell out the fee for admission:

Moderators are still needed for the following sessions. Please let me
know if you can do any of these.
Some of these sessions weren't in my last email because the people I'd
planned to moderate them dropped out, so please look at the new list
below and see if any of these seem interesting. It's not a demanding
job, so if you were intending on attending any of these anyway, you
may as well moderate while you're there. :-)
Chris Messina in session 1.
Alexis Rondeau and Stan Wiechers in session 3.
Paul Sponagl and Kasper Souren in session 7.
Fernanda Viegas, Martin Wattenberg, and Ben Shneiderman in session 7.
Discussion sessions during Sunday lunch.
Betsy Devine and Joe Reagle in session 8.
Wikimedia legal issues discussion in session 8.
James Forrester in session 8.
Benjamin Martin, Hari Nadig, and Kasper Souren in session 8.
David Weinberger - Sunday Keynote.
Organisers for all Lightning Talk sessions are also needed.
Angela
Dear all,
The proceedings for Wikimania are almost complete. Phoebe and Nick : you
are manic demideities.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Transwiki:Wikimania05/Index
The proceedings this year are available online ahead of time, so that you
can start discussing the topics and asking questions of the authors and
speakers now -- and so that this can inform their presentations and the
questions asked at the end.
One of the goals of Wikimania is to actually reach some high-bandwidth
comparison of similar questions and ideas, and resolution of some
difficult but solvable issues that it can be hard to work through without
a concerted push by many people at the same time.
If there is a topic you want to discuss or see discussed at Wikimania,
please find relevant presentations, or create discussions and link to
them from the Discussions page. Don't forget to link out to existing
conversations on other wikis and mailing lists, and to let those
conversants know that there is a wikimania page (and potentially
a bof or f2f discussion) about the topic.

Looking forward to seeing many of you next week,
SJ

Wikimania 2006 in Cambridge: wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/
I'm going to be co-ordinating Wikimania moderators.
If you would like to volunteer, please let me know as soon as
possible, along with details of whether there are any times you can't
do, or any sessions on http//wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Schedule
that you have a preference for moderating.
Moderating basically involves introducing the speaker and then making
sure they finish on time, and sometimes handling questions from the
audience at the end when there's time for a Q&A session. You will also
need to find the speaker before the event and make sure they're happy
with the arrangements and know where they're going. You don't need any
technical knowledge since other people will be available for making
sure any recording devices and projectors are set up.
Angela.
I'd love to moderate Brion's session.

There will be a few events at Wikimania. Among them :
* A Friday evening poster reception, with some cool new demonstrations
* A Saturday night party, with robots, holograms, and a Web 1.0 theme
* The World Calvinball Championship
* The Wikimania Awards, with prizes for the best free-content media
and writing uploaded to the projects over the past year
* A free-content film festival, including a presentation of a clip of
the documentary of last year's Wikimania presented by the filmmaker,
Rory O'Connor (with some thoughts on why he came to think a
community-edited Wikimentary would be a great idea; cf.
[[m:Wikimentary]] )
* Outings into the city on Monday; rumours of a beer-sampling run.
* A 40th birthday party for Jimbo, Friday night
...and a few other satellite parties. Keep an eye on the events page,
and update it with events you know of that are planned for Wikimania.

All the best,
SJ
Hi all,
this is just a reminder that almost all presentations now have abstracts up at
http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proceedings:Index. All of
these abstracts have a discussion page, as well... please use it to
list comments or questions you have about specific presentations
before the conference begins. Presenters will use comments on these
pages to help shape their presentations, and having a list of
questions beforehand will be useful in q&a. Let's get the discussions
started!
There are a couple of special requests for questions beforehand:
1) the panelists on the reference work publishing panel (two
encyclopedists and a dictionary editor, from Berkshire, World Book,
and Oxford Dictionaries) would like to know what specific questions
you have about their work as editors of these reference works.
The abstract is here:
http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proceedings:KC1; please add
comments to the talk page.
2) Larry Lessig and Eben Moglen will be presenting; Lessig on free
culture and Moglen on GFDL updates and more. We are hoping that in the
second hour they will be able to take questions on free licenses.
Please add questions to the talk page here:
http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proceedings:EM2
3) Finally, we are very pleased to announce that Ward Cunningham will
be giving an on-stage interview on Friday. Please leave questions for
this session on the talk page here:
http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proceedings:WC1
thank you,
phoebe

Hi,
I didn't realize that I would get constant discussion threads.
If this is not the correct way to remove my name, please let me know.
Thank you,

A few notes on sharing the wikimania love, before and during the
conference :
* Attached is a draft pamphlet for spreading the word about Wikimania,
care of Reid Offringa. On a less sacrilegious note, there is also a
lovely hacking-days poster image about (Brett, what's the latest version
like?) which would make a good printout to bring to other related events.
* There are three entries so far in the t-shirt competition; and while
they are pretty darn good, more are wanted! And other image suggestions,
including icons/buttons of various sizes, are welcome.
* A Wikimania party Saturday night is being planned for the MIT Museum,
which is a proper tardis of a building. You can prepare by practicing
your DDR skills...
http://web.mit.edu/museum/collections/index.html
* Friday there will be, among other things, a party hosted by wikitravel;
who is encouraged to put more details up on the wiki, where that and other
events are noted:
