The Kakamega pre-vist was undertaken betwenn 25th-29th jan.I happened to
visit quite a number of schools in Kakamega,Mumias and Vihiga.
A few things worth sharing:
- that accessing the School Heads was not easy, they were either away in
meetings or were not available
- A good option i learnt was to approach the School's Computer teacher
who was easy to deal with(in some schools, the teacher okayed the visit and
project and in others refered me to the head)
- nothing tells it like a live demo,it realy worked!
- The' free-ness' is bound to generate controversy,Explaining more about
Wikimedia Kenya worked
- Some teachers even wanted the same Installed for them right
away-unfortunately I did not have a 4gb flash disc.
- that not all schools are willing to accept our offer-this is because
1. some have just introduced the Computer studies program and felt they
aren't well prepared for that
2. some needed the MoE letter showing we have its blessings
3. yet some liked it but could not okay it as the School Head was
away(due to Form one selection, most heads were away in meetings) or needed
consultations with owner. This was quite a problem as I had limited time and
was running on a tight schedule and limited resources. As such,I tried
calling the Heads where possible but most insisted on having a physical
meetup to discuss the same
I had to visit alternative schools where it was impossible to obtain on-spot
confirmation as waiting for the school head would have wasted time and could
not come back later due to cost implication and not being sure to find
him/her
It would thus be prudent for other Teams to consider some of this approaches
and be ready for the a forementioned complications.
I designed a questionnare that I ysed to collect all the relevant data as
concerns the school's infrastructural state, contact information and
availability.I will share the same later if need be.It was a duplicate form
that would enable us have proof that the school okayed our visit and that we
got a date with them as it had the schools official stamp.it also served as
my Wikimedia ID,so guys please work on Identification, some guys realy needed
it.I also printed the PREAMBLE for the Wikipedia for schools selection on
the ZIM file,It served as my preamble and I left a copy to each school i
visited.
I managed to bring 10 schhols onboard including Sigalagala technical
Institute;
the following are the schools we will undertake the pilot:
1. Kakamega High School
2. St.Agnes Shibuye Girls
3. Musingu High School
4. Mukumu Girls High School
5. St.Peters Mumias Boys
6. Muslim Mumias boys
7. Sigalagala Technical Institute-main campus
8. Sigalagala Technical Institute-Town campus
9. mbale Shalom academy
10. Vihiga High School
I had telephone conversations with other schools and we may pass by them
during our pilot if we have time.Of interest was the fact that Chavakali
high School have the Wikipedia for Schools. :-)
Lastly,so far the Kakamega pilot is set for the 1st week of march, and this
are the participants who have confirmed their availabilty in the same:
1. Limoke Oscar
2. Wafula Alex
3. Osano Sarah
4. Obwari Branton
5. Nyamboga Lilian
6. Bakari
I thus look forward to their input and suggestions in the Pilot.
I would be happy to respond to any queries and concerns over the same.

Hey Guys,
Looks like we can not undertake the Pilot in Nyeri.I thus wold like to float
an alternative:
- that we undertake the pilot n the Thika-Nairobi-Murang'a-Kiambu
area. Its close to Nairobi and bet someone on the list is well versed with
the area.
- the area is in larger Central region and as such wont contradict or
budget and plans.
- incorporate KU in the Pilot (we owe them, kill 2 stones with 1 bird :)
)and a few middle level colleges around(trust me colleges are so eager to
have it than High schools)
- or explore Davids earlier suggestion of Makueni (Ukamabani) and have
someone take the previsit ASAP.
What do you guys think?

If guys are available for Thika, well and good.
Though with the constraints poping up, I see Nairobi as the best replacement for Nyeri plus finding schools won't be as hard.

Since most of us are in Nairobi, it will be easier for us to integrate previsits to our daily schedules.
As for me I'm available Thursday mornings and willing to visit a school or two during this time.
Ps: Oscar, how's the previsit at Kakamega so far?

Guys,
Am sure you saw Bence Damokos' mail on the Wikimedia Conference 2011, we are
meant to nominate 2 people to represent us... I had assumed it was a
selection so I had gone ahead and filled the forms.
I post this to invite nominations for the same... am not sure if am allowed
to but I would nominate myself alongside someone else... but I think lets
agree on a criteria for the same, I believe it needs to be of benefit to all
of us. So lets hear you.

Hi? I am Lilian Nyarera Nyamboga from JKUAT. I take Computer Science and am
greatly interested in joining the Wiki Media Kenya group.
I attended the anniversary at Strathmore university and I would like to be part
of the upcoming WIKIPEDIA FOR SCHOOLS PROJECT.
Kindest regards
Lilian
Dear Wikimedia Kenya,
The annual Wikimedia Conference (a.k.a. Chapters' Meeting) will take place
this year between 25-27 March in Berlin, Germany. The conference is a good
opportunity for chapters to establish links with each other, share their
stories and to learn from each other. This is also an opportunity to discuss
some specific issues and challenges facing different chapters and in some
cases the Wikimedia movement in general. Each year, existing chapters,
promising chapters in formation, and select members of the Wikimedia
Foundation Board and Staff are invited to attend the discussions, working
groups and workshops at the conference dealing with issues like outreach,
cultural partnerships, volunteer cultivation, organizational development,
and any other topic the chapters feel relevant to tackle in a given year.
I'd like to personally extend an invitation to attend the 2011 conference
and to offer my contact details for any queries you may have in connection
to the conference.
The Wikimedia Kenya group is invited to nominate up to two members (likely
future board members) to participate in the work of the meeting. Please
register your representatives on the
http://de.amiando.com/wmcon11chap.htmlsite (please use the code
chap2011berlin to enter the site) by the
end of next week (the earlier the better, especially if you need a visa or
invitation letter).
If there is a question you can't answer yet, please just leave that field
blank and send the answer later by email, or clarify the situation in an
"other" field. Any information is better than no information. The organizers
of the meeting are happy to help organize your travel and provide help in
acquiring a visa, just tick the corresponding checkboxes on the registration
form and let us know the necessary details.
Finally, I would also very much welcome your input on the programme of this
years' Chapters meeting and I invite you to share your ideas on the
brainstorming page we have set up for this purpose at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Chapters_meeting_2011/Brainstorming.
If you have any questions, queries or concerns, please do contact me at my
bence.damokos(a)wikimedia.de address or on GTalk at bdamokos(a)gmail.com.
Best regards,
Bence Damokos
Programme Coordinator,
