Hi all,
We were developing the content curriculum for the Kenyan curriculum so that we could have a custom-made offline Wikipedia version for us here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Offline_Projects/Content_Development/Schools…. Is there anyone who is still working on this? As of now we have articles on Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, IRE, Agriculture, History & Geography. We don't have articles on Business Studies & CRE. Articles re Physics, Math, and Geography are too few and still need to be increased. Is there anyone here who has access to the Kenyan curriculum willing to fill in the blanks?
Thanks to Steve & Dennis on adding some articles.

Hello Folks!
I have been physically following up on the subject of this email (together
with Abbas and Alex) for sometime now and it seems the logistics and the
speed with which these institutions are planning this are so slow that I
feel I cant wait any longer. Those of you who have worked in the Kenyan
government or for the Kenyan government definitely understand my concerns
regarding the periods that they would take to decide on such a simple thing
on what to do - probably call an AGM of the stakeholders.
In most of the cases, these guys do not understand the online stuff or even
how the internet works let alone Wikipedia (which is our work anyway). At
the end they will come to appreciate that it is a good thing - which it is
always is.There was a time when we visited the Kenya Railways museum and
the curator there was always confusing their institutional website with
Wikipedia. He thought Wikipedians job is to improve organizational
websites! we clarified and made it clear about this and on the next meeting
he was at it again!
On our meeting with another directorate of the National Museums of Kenya,
he asked whether he could find Wikipedia on Google search. the exact
conversation was as below.
*Alex*: Hello, My name is Alex and am here with my colleague Steve and we
>> work at Wikipedia. Wikipedia is ...blah blah blah....
>>
> *Museum directorate*: Do you mean if I search Wikipedia on Google I will
>> find it? (Was just hilarious:)
>>

Personally, I have not spoken to Kenya Archives about GLAM (though Abbas
did). But I think we should just go ahead and organize editathons at this
premises and this is why.
On Sunday 17th 2012 I was to meet with a friend in town who was running
late and so I decided to part with 50 Kenyan shillings ($0.5) and enter the
premise (Kenya National Archives) just to see what it holds. Plus I did not
want to stand along the streets or sit on the benches due to the frequent
IED attacks in Nairobi. It is rich in artifacts and even books about
history of Kenya, royal visits to Kenya, Kenyatta's famous chair and to
crown it all they have a library with articles about all these treasures.
The receptionist in fact encouraged me to take photos with a camera even
before I asked for permission. She even encouraged me to become a member of
their library and I only needed to part with 200 KES for a year as
subscription to access the material plus the artifacts of course.
My question is, can't we pay for this subscription and start using the
library to write articles about Kenya now that they have offline references
there? Probably on Weekends or even weekdays depending on the time one is
free. I think the chapter can cushion the subscriptions if that would
hinder any Wikipedian from accessing the facility. The internet shall
definitely be provided.
Kenya is still dark and still in the dark continent. Can't we illuminate it
with some light......?
My thoughts.

Hello Folks,
>From our last chapter meet-up on May 26th [1] we decided that there shall
be an edit only meet-up in this month plus a thorough intro to Wiki editing
of our new members at the chapter. I would suggest we get into planning
early to give sufficient notice and make all the necessary arrangements
into place.
In the meantime, I have been compiling a list of stub-articles under
category Kenya that need expansion which we could use at the editathon plus
clearing up the remaining bit of the topics for off-line Wikipedia. We
will also need a venue for this meeting
Venue: Abbas please confirm whether the Ihub will be available or otherwise.
regards,
Stephen

Hello everyone. I won't be able to make it to Nairobi for the editathon, prior commitments. Wish you all the best for it.

Hello Folks!
As we edit English Wikipedia, you will note that the tag Requested
photos<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_requested_photographs_in_Ke…>is
quite rampant in most articles that are about people or features in
Kenya. As I navigated around categories of requested photographs in Africa,
I established that Kenya has the highest number of requested photos as
compared to the rest of the African countries. (I stand to be corrected
though).
Even if the case is not so, we still have around 500+ requested photos for
use in Wikipedia from Kenya. But again most of these photos are of people
[1]. For a case in point; Conjestina the famous female boxing champion.
Personally, I would not envisage a scenario where I would be attending a
boxing match so that I can really get a nice shot of her. But as a
Wikipedia contributor I would really like to see here photo up on Wikipedia
but how? One thing I believe is that, we can fulfill a great percentage of
these requests and this is why?
Recently, after the demise of the late Prof. George Saitoti, I held my
horses for a reliable source to broadcast about this on the very hour of
his passing. For this case it was the Daily Nation and Capital FM news that
did it first from my search. I went to his Wikipedia article and updated it
with the appropriate info plus some slight changes on the tense. I tweeted…
”Hey! Someone already update the Saitoti Wikipedia article #KOT”
>
#KOT is a hash tag for Kenyans On Twitter that is used to address issues
concerning Kenya on this social network. The tweet got several retweets and
over that some positive PR that Wikipedia is up-to date.
Later on, I was contacted by a journalist from the Nation Media Group as a
result of my actions on Wikipedia. He told me that he had an account on
Wikipedia but he infrequently edits because he doesn’t know how albeit he
fetched my number from my FB profile via my Wikipedia userpage. He got my
username from the history of the late Professor George Saitoti article. He
interviewed me on the phone for about 45 minutes and I wish to clarify that
I spoke in my opinion as a Wikipedia editor and not for the chapter or for
the Wikimedia movement. He asked me how and why I did that and in general
why I edit Wikipedia.
Having said that, these journalists are a very essential base of photo
contributors to us since most of these photos about the people in question
have already been taken but in the protection of Journalists of these media
houses. Probably what we need to do is to talk to them about CC licenses
and the impact that their work would have on Wikipedia. From my interview,
he was very jubilant about my deeds. I invited the journalist to come in
after giving him an overview of cc licenses and that I need photos to make
articles about Kenya and its people on Wikipedia speak more than 1000 words:)
Another thing we can use social media (twitter) to inform people about
Wikipedia activities here in Kenya. Read this article [2] about a CNN
correspondent who navigated Kenya via twitter and she even organized a
meet-up via twitter by using the tag #KOT!
I would like to hear your point of view about this.
regards,
Stephen.
