Hi Everyone,
As we all know, Kenya participated in the Wiki Loves Monuments Contest
that concluded recently. We had 97 images uploaded to Commons of Kenyan
Monuments cutting across Kenya's diverse geography. Surprising to all of
us, we had images from as far as Nyeri and Mombasa
A jury of 3 was selected to help judge the images that would participate in
the International Contest. The Jury was Diverse and had consisted of memvsr
from: Wikimedia France, Wikimedia Ghana(Unchapter) and Wikimedia Kenya.
The judging criteria involved each member of the Jury selecting his/her top
10 best images . After which each member was then allowed to score each
image he/she had selected with 10points for best image and 1 point for the
least. The points across all the images were then summed and the final
score for each image used to select the final images . Incase of a tie in
points, the image that was voted by the most number of Jury members was
given a higher weight and so forth.
Here are the Top 10 Images that would compete in the International Contest:

Next Steps:
- First is to Congratulate everyone who prticipated in the Challenge
either through helping iwth the ourgainization ir as a participant.
- Since we could not ask for a budget for National Winners, we would be
trying to solicit for consolation prizes to award to all the Top Images
from Friendly Chapters of The Foundation
- To reach out to all the participants(especially out of Nairobi) who
will be key to our scaling of our projects across the country bearing in
mInd that most od us hail in Nairobi
- Encouraged by the small success of this, we hope to make a
better budget and preparations foe next years WLM
Once again, congratulations to all

Heya folks!
The WLM was completed and I think we should have some entries from our
collection at [1] as entrants in the international competition.
Volunteers are welcome to form a jury that shall oversee the process. I
wont be part of the jury since I participated in WLM and therefore and a
conflict of Interest might arise.
I think we should also appreciate the persons who took part in the
competition. Some other chapters are issuing certificates of
participartion, talk age barnsters and some issuing consolation prizes
for those that wont make it to the intl nominations.
PS: Am still waiting for questions regarding WMKE expenditure at [2].
regards,
Stephen.

The Kakamega Pilot
Preamble
The Kakamega Pilot was carried out from 28th-4th March 2011.It was a huge
success and a lot was learnt and gained from the pilot.
The People
The following were the participants in the Pilot.
1. Limoke Oscar <http://wikimedia.or.ke/User:Limoke_oscar>
2. Alexander Wafula <http://wikimedia.or.ke/User:Xelawafs>
3. Sarah Osano

The Schools
The following were the schools visited and the experiences learnt from them.
St.Peter's Mumias Boys High School
It has around 20 usable computers. The Office was not that much receptive
although they okayed the same.I think they did not really understand what
it was all about. The Deputy Head teacher whom I had contacted during the
pre-visit had been transfered.Nevertheless we were allowed to install in
there student computers.Interestingly, one etcher who was working in the
computer lab noticed what we were doing and on being explained to,was
really excite and instantly he searched and found very rare Art notes he
was teaching his students!Excited,he printed the same and went out to fetch
other teachers to explain to them the same.It was explained to a few
teachers who liked the idea so much.Although we did not have audience with
the students,we were glad that a few teachers learnt and liked the project.
Muslim Boys Secondary School
Very receptive School.Problem was they had very old computers. Most of which
did not have USB ports or DVD Roms(We will post pics soon). We installed in
a few student computers and to the office and staff computers. We also made
a presentation to the a huge number of students. The lab technician
requested some utility software which unfortunately we did not have after a
power blackout caused there central examination repository computer to
crash. Unfortunately it was while we we had just started installing Kiwix!!
We also encountered a problem with the Director of Studies computer which
apparently crashed after we had used a flash disc from the student
computers to install in his computer.Alex-our IT guy later explained why it
may have crashed still after we had formated the flash disc. That the
viruses may still have been transfered in our computers and the student
computers thus still after formating, they still got transmitted to the
flash from our computers. Alex was however quick to correct a repeat of the
same by finding a way to make our flash discs "Read Only".Together with
Stephen, they successful made our flash discs "Read Only" and thus more
secure.
Mukumu Girls High School
Very receptive.First School to have audience with the Principal in Her
office. She really liked the idea and so did all the teachers. We installed
in all the Student computer labs and office computers of the school. We had
a presentation with to the Students and teachers.the students really found
the Wikipedia very resourceful especially those who were preparing for
the Science
Congress for Kenyan
Schools<http://wikimedia.or.ke/index.php?title=Science_Congress_for_Kenyan_Schools&…>
Sigalagala Technical Institute
The first and only college we visited.Very receptive.Had audience with the
Principal and the Management Information System Officer. They really liked
it and asked us to come back for a presentation to the students later!A
technical challenge due to the logistics and budget constraint.
Vihiga High School
Very receptive.Had a brief presentation to the teachers who really liked
the idea.Installed in all the student computer labs and all the office and
personal computers of the teachers.Had a presentation to the students.
Mbale Shalom Academy
First and only private school we visited.Very receptive.had audience with
the management of the School. Installed in all the student computers.Very
good computers.Had a presentation to students and teachers
Kakamega High School
very receptive school.has very good Computers.Installed in most of the
student computers and office and personal computers of the staff.Had a
presentation to the students and teachers.
St.Agnes Shibuye Girls
I was skeptical about this school. The head teacher had earlier on been
quite 'afraid' with regards to the MoE's letter.but the Director of
e-leaning was very supportive.he made sure it was a success.despite having
a power blackout,they switched to a generator.We installed in a few
computers as not all the computers were served by the generator. We also had
a presentation to the students and teachers who were so excited by it.
On the sides
The Kakamega had lots of fun too.after a hard days work,we visited all the
tourist spots around. We visited Mumias Sugar
Company<http://wikimedia.or.ke/index.php?title=Mumias_Sugar_Company&action=edit&red…>,"The
Bench" in Muliro
Gardens<http://wikimedia.or.ke/index.php?title=Muliro_Gardens&action=edit&redlink=1>
,The Crying Stone<http://wikimedia.or.ke/index.php?title=The_Crying_Stone&action=edit&redlink…>
and
the Kakamega Forest<http://wikimedia.or.ke/index.php?title=Kakamega_Forest&action=edit&redlink=1>.Great
food and entertainment was in plenty.Pics will be uploaded soon.... Alex
was able to re-design our completion certificate that Abbas had sent on our
way to the first school. Awesome work Alex
Thanks for the awesome work guys, lets keep the fire burning.Limoke

Last meeting we had constructive deliberations on the way forward for
the Chapter .We agreed among among things that ,we need to do a fresh
membership drive ,the six million dollar question was, who is an
eligible Chapter member ?We explored the following scenarios
1. Membership based on being a lister on the WMKE ,where most of us are
2.Membership based on payment of the membership fee as enshrined in
our by laws
3.We have members of the Foundation who are not expressly members of
the Chapter
It was observed and noted that being a lister on the Chapter mailing
list does not mean you are a member o the Chapter ,interestingly a
mailing list is 'a members only ' platform.
As we seek to give WMKE a fresh life by doing a fresh recruitment
by the end of the year , i call upon your views on this matter ,
my regards
bruce.
When is the meetup?

Been following this issue for a while and i must say i have restrained myself from being judgmental , Steve, there is no justification for your actions whatsoever ,BUT your admission is a step in the right direction , We have learned our lesson albeit with a painful experience ,its a learning process & WMKE will emerge stronger .
I want to believe that if we had the structures in place ,the unfortunate incident will not have occurred ,i call upon WMKE members to rededicate themselves to the activities of this young chapter , to the board, registration of WMKE is long overdue ,an audit of the expenditure is required & finally the issue of joint account .
My regards!
Bruce.

Hi all,
As most of you already know, we have had concerns raised over our finances
surrounding suspicions of embezzlement of funds by our treasurer. I am sad
to confirm these suspicions. Stephen Wanjau, the treasurer has come forward
and admitted to the Board that he has used part of the funds for personal
non-chapter expenses amounting to approximately USD. 800 and resigned from
the Board effective immediately.
We will now move to wire back the remaining funds to WMF for keeping until
we have our own bank account and more than one signatory for the same. As
for the embezzled funds, it will be Stephen's responsibility to return the
amount.
This is a major setback for the Chapter having had so many plans that got
sidelined over confrontations to get the issue resolved. It is my hope that
we will mobilize through this trying time and come out better and more
accountable. I would also like to take this opportunity to thanks Asaf for
his support in this matter.
On Behalf of the Board,
Alex Wafula
Dear all,
As many know, in Wikimedia Spain we are dealing with a very nasty business.
While we were preparing our financial report we caught our former secretary
stealing money from our chapter.
The stolen amount is in the vicinity of 2500 euros. He even left a debt of
~100 euros that I have personally covered. It may not seem much, but it was
all we had.
The former secretary never gave access to the new treasurer, he just made
it look like the bank was delaying the process of the change of treasurers.
He also sent us falsified extracts of the account and the amount of money
in it.
We were so concerned with the behaviour of the bank that we were about to
change to another one. And then we received a call from the bank saying our
account was in debt.
When confronted, the former secretary confessed. All the data are clear,
for the bank's official reports are avaliable now.
Also, with the gently support of the WMF, in the persons of Asaf, Garfield
and Jay, we have already start all the legal actions needed according to
Spanish law, including formal complaint to the Police and all the papers
with the Bank. We have prepared an official statement too, "just in case"
any spanish media want to discuss the case.
This has been a huge blow for us, as you can imagine. Fortunately, it has
been only one person and the rest of the members of WMES are now trying to
re-boost our chapter. Of course, by september will be a General Assembly,
for all the Board have resign with the aim to lead a transparent process.
Best regards,
