I wish you had mentioned this earlier since one needs a ticket to attend.
I have tickets for 4 guys only. I'll try to get you one but no promises.
Hopefuly our presentation will be on Saturday but this is not yet finalized.

Hey all,
I'll be working on a template over Dec and part of Jan on how an Open Cyber Café should operate and look like. By open meaning it supports/runs open tech/knowledge software and provides information to customers around the same.
Even with picking up of Internet access over mobile phones, Cyber Café's are still huge in Kenya (and Africa) with their core business being charging for Internet access. Sorry, no references, just my eyes (0_0)
I plan to use the template later on to run an Open Cyber Café challenge. The winning Cyber will of-course get featured and gain more popularity both locally and Internationally; you never know, it might be an alternative hacker space. Some goodies / prizes should also come in handy.
Currently, I'm getting in-touch with a couple of open-source enthusiasts mostly for swag (posters, brochures etc) to distribute among participating Cafés
I'm looking forward to have Wikimedia on the template so suggestions/comments are welcomed.

Hello Wikimedia Kenya
I am working on a project with Translators Without Borders to first
translate medical articles from standard English to simple English and
than from simple English to other languages.
http://translatorswithoutborders.com/
They are keen to translate into African languages as they have been
doing outreach in Nairobi. Are there people from Wikimedia Kenya who
would be interested in
getting involved with this project? I mainly edit medical content on
the English Wikipedia and would help on the English side of things.
Translators Without Borders will deal with the translation to Swahili
(but I am sure would appreciate help). We than need people who can
take this text and Wikify it and place it in Swahili Wikipedia.
I am going to be coming to your area of the world in Feb/Mar and would
be interested in meeting in person (will be in Kenya and Tanzania)

Hello,
I came across this on the project Wikipedia mobile, and I thought it's
worth sharing.
---
On mobile devices , many people go directly to wikipedia.org .
Unfortunately, this shows the standard portal page of the globe and
languages . Everyone in the world currently sees the same page on their
mobile device, and it is not so easy to read and navigate that page on a
small screen.
What if we could show a country-
specific portal page automatically, based on the current location of the
user?
The search interface would use the most-used language of that country, with
secondary languages for that
country prominently displayed as
options.
In order to see how countries use languages, take a look here :
http://stats .wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportPageViewsPerCountryBreakdown.htm
In some countries, the native
language is the primary version of Wikipedia that is used. Certainly that
is true of all
English-speaking countries,
Germany, France, Spain, Japan, etc.
But there are more than 60 countries where English is not their native
language, and yet English Wikipedia is the primary version. Usually the
secondary version is the one in their
native language.
And in India , English may be the
common denominator, but all the Indic languages would be obvious choices.
Easily searching in one of those
languages could be so much more obvious. Viewing and typing in some
languages can be an issue, of course.
What do you think of this idea? Give us your feedback so we can prioritize
this project.
***
Regards,
Stephen
