Hi all,
I just wanted to let you know that I am part of a working group involved in the digitization of the Kenya News Agency archives. The KNA was established in 1943, and is a photographic library that was used in the past decades by journalists to document various pre-colonial events such as the MauMau struggle. They have lots of content that are a national treasure, yet most of their photos are stored in metallic cabinets at Jogoo House, due to budgetary constraints.
The KNA would therefore like to digitize its content so as to increase access and has started up a small working group to figure out the best way(s) to go about this.
I'll update you guys with more info about the digitization after we have our first meeting.
Regards,Abbas.
Hi all,
We were developing the content curriculum for the Kenyan curriculum so that we could have a custom-made offline Wikipedia version for us here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Offline_Projects/Content_Development/Schools…. Is there anyone who is still working on this? As of now we have articles on Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, IRE, Agriculture, History & Geography. We don't have articles on Business Studies & CRE. Articles re Physics, Math, and Geography are too few and still need to be increased. Is there anyone here who has access to the Kenyan curriculum willing to fill in the blanks?
Thanks to Steve & Dennis on adding some articles.

Hi Wikimedia Kenya,
The camera is shipped!
I'd like to see the chapter document itself - that is to say that you guys
all built your chapter from the ground up and if you can document what you
are doing yourself that would be awesome. I leave it up to you guys to
document what you feel inclined to document!
GEAR:
I am sending a backpack to David Mugo in Chicago with a Canon XA-10 Camera,
attached wide-angle lens, a Rode NTG-3 Microphone, a light, 2 power
adapters, power cable, 3 batteries, remote control, cd/dvd install discs,
consent waivers, camera rental agreements, storyteller questions and a
guide to using the camera.
2 things that might be useful for you to use/find that I *haven't
included*are: headphones and a tripod.
One thing to note: when the camera is zoomed out ALL THE WAY you can
sometimes see the microphone in the upper right corner of the image, so I
typically will zoom in *slightly*, so you don't see the microphone.
The camera operates as a camcorder, and can be configured with any number
of settings. I recommend keeping the settings as they are, but feel free to
use it as you feel so inclined. The XA-10 has a touch screen display. The
camera records onto built-in memory first, and then 2 SD cards. There is
the capacity of hours and hours of footage on the camera. When you transfer
the footage be sure that you have some hard drives with many 10's of GB of
space to copy the data to.
STORYTELLING:
When I conduct an interview for storytelling, I'll set the camera on a
tripod, and find a quiet place with some good lighting (so we can see the
persons face) and frame the person on camera in a closeup shot. I'll keep
the camera plugged into a wall, unless there is no outlet.
I typically talk to people for 30 minutes to an hour, and ask people about
first who they are, where they come from, and then ask about how they
discovered Wikipedia and why they are involved.
LAW:
I just spoke with our legal department:
Basically *anyone who uses the camera has to sign the rental
agreement*(attached in this email) that i have also printed and
included with the
camera, and *anyone who is interviewed has to sign the legal release* (also
attached in this email) and also printed and included with the camera.
Also the camera has to be returned 6 weeks from the 25th of July.
WMF USA will pay for return shipping - I don't think it would be fair to
send a 'gift' that makes people pay for it.
Let me know if I haven't thought of anything and I look forward to seeing
what you guys produce!
Victor

Hello all,
I and a group of my friends - soon to be wikipedians - are making a
facebook app to spread awareness of and increase the usage of Wikiversity.
The idea dawned on us that most of our online activities revolve around
google search and facebook. Wikipedia is used when google search
results spits out a wikipedia article relevant to a search term.
The app is still rudimentary and does not have much features. Among some
features we are trying to come up with are:
- sharing of links to wikiversity articles
- enabling comments among friends on the relevant articles
- linking articles to google groups and google+
On the last point, our campus, JKUAT Juja, has implemented Google Apps for
Education and therefore students have google+ profiles
and have started to incorporate google groups to coordinate class work
activities.
I invite wikipedia kenya to look at the app on facebook and share on some
features you believe the app can include.

Guys,
I hope you are good, I am writing this in great concern of what is
happening with the chapter and finances. We are a very young chapter and we
need not be where we are at this point. When we elected the board, we
agreed to have an audit committee that will be there to keep check on the
board's decisions in all matters including finances.
The fact that WMKE is ran by the board means we need an external organ to
ensure accountability and responsibility.
I would hereby propose that we suggest/nominate 4 members who can handle
this until we have the next meeting to either confirm the members or
conduct a process to appoint these members. I would like to leave this open
but also insist that it is really urgent as we decide on the current
situation, its solution and action to be taken by the chapter regarding the
matter. Please suggest names or volunteer and we can all come up with a
final process to create membership of this committee.

Hello Wikimedia Kenya,
So a week ago at Wikimania, my team's goal was to interview as many
Wikipedians as possible on video, and I can't believe it but we actually
did it. We recorded around 100 on-camera interviews from editors from all
over the world. Now we have to begin the post-production process. (It was
good to meet a few of you in person too).
I regret to say that since Wikimania, AGAIN my priorities have to shift
from coming to Kenya -- to editing this video. There is a lot of footage to
go through and only so much time to get it done correctly if it is going to
play by the fundraiser.
That said, I feel I owe the Kenyan chapter some kind of a favor for all
your patience. What I have is a Canon XA-10 professional
camcorder<http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/camcorders/professional_cam…>that
I won't be using while I'm editing the Wikimania interview footage. I
could loan it to the chapter for some time and let you decide how best to
use it. It's a very compact, high-quality camera that is very easy to learn
to use. It records on high-speed SD cards and can record for hours and
hours at a time. I would be happy to help with any questions you may have
about operating it or editing / manipulating footage from it. Please let me
know if the chapter could use a camera like this for some time, and I will
ship it immediately.
I'd like to thank you for all your patience with me, I don't want to
promise anything I can't deliver on - but I can say that I want to talk to
all of you and hope I can be of service soon. Also if there is anything
else I can do while I'm editing footage, please let me know.

Hi Everyone -
I am assembling a camera bag and will ship tomorrow to David Mugo (since he
is in Chicago until Monday).
Since I have a background in location sound recording, I want the chapter
to record the best audio possible along with the best video possible --
therefore I will be including a delicate microphone of my own, so please be
careful with it! ( I know you will ).
Tomorrow i'll be writing up a list of guidelines and things --
I will keep everyone posted!

Hello everyone!
I hope this email finds you well. I haven't posted here for awhile, but
I've been lurking on the mailing list, and I'm always happy to read about
the exciting things going on :)
I had a questions for you all. I have been in correspondence with an
Ethiopian (who lives now in the United States) who wants to help get
Wikipedia Offline into the hands of Ethiopians, who suffer from limited and
restricted Internet access. I of course pointed him in the direction of
online materials, but I would love to put him in direct contact with some
of you who helped with the Schools Wikipedia project. He has some ideas and
questions which I think your experiences would be most useful in answering.
Let me know if that's ok, and if so, who I should/could direct him to
specifically.
Thanks!
Jessie

HI Team,
IN the absence of our Chair and in the interest of the Chapter following
the recent financial saga with Wikimedia Spain financials where they lost
over 2500USD Chapters funds, I would like to propose an urgent Chapters
meeting to do a quick audit of our financials in an open way
THE treasurer should get us our Statements of expenditures and accounts as
we stand for half year in order to make plans for a new bank account and to
plan for upcoming projects that need urgent member approvals.
Please Treasure make plans to avail the same.
I PROPOSE at UoN grounds this Saturday?
