hi,
in one week i plan to enable the new web server on hemlock. this will
hopefully solve the problems people are seeing with long-running scripts.
until then, people should test their sites with the new server. you can do
this by using 'toolserver.org:81' in the URL, instead of 'toolserver.org'. for
example, if your tool is at:
http://toolserver.org/~johnsmith/mytool.php
you would use:
http://toolserver.org:81/~johnsmith/mytool.php
if everything works correctly, you do not need to do anything.
if you have a problem, and cannot solve it yourself, please let me know and
i'll investigate.
if you use rewrite rules, you need to convert them to the new server's rewrite
format. this page explains how to do that:
https://wiki.toolserver.org/view/ZWS
please do not distribute the toolserver.org:81 URLs (except for testing), as
they will stop working in a week. if you are having problems with the current
web server, and would like to be moved to the new one before a week, let me
know. people who requested this during the last test have been moved to the
new server already. that is: kalan agony luxo pathoschild
the final change to the new web server, assuming there are no major problems,
will be Tuesday, 2nd December.

I was investigating a better version of Special:Lonelypages (ignore disambig pages, exclude the already tagged, identify 1- and 2- link orphans as well as no-link orphans, etc.) but when I run the original Lonelypages SQL query on nightshade against enwiki_p it times out after 10 minutes.
SELECT page_namespace, page_title FROM page LEFT JOIN pagelinks ON page_namespace=pl_namespace AND page_title=pl_title WHERE pl_namespace IS NULL AND page_namespace=".NS_MAIN." AND page_is_redirect=0;
I know pagelinks is HUGE (like 265,000,000+ entries), but I thought it would work since it's what we use for Lonelypages. I'm looking at LIMIT queries, etc., but before I go further, is this just too much to ask of nightshade?

Hello Admins.
According to the login info line after the MOTD on nightshade, the next
unconfirmed account expiry occurs on 2008-12-23. Due to holiday
travelling, I will be offline around that time, and I imagine I won't
be the only one in the predicament with spotty Internet access. Could
we move the procedure a month later instead?
Hi!
I wrote a perl script, which works on some HTML content of some
wikipedia-webpages. Some of those pages are >300kB and perls LWP-mirror
hangs up.
Two questions:
1. Is there a better/faster way to get the HTML content of e.g.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Spam_blacklist/Log
than
my $ua = LWP::UserAgent->new;
$ua->mirror($url, $filename);
?
2. If I've questions about such stuff, am I right here? Otherwise, sorry
for bothering you. :-)
Cheers

Hello,
CAS numbers are used to identify chemical compounds [1]. Someone on
fr.wp has created a template for CAS numbers; it uses the CAS number
as a parameter and outputs some links to several resources/databases
[2]. The thing is, although these links might be useful, the articles
aren't really the good place for them.
I was wondering if someone from this list would be willing to write a
simple tool on the toolserver à la GeoHack. The tool would do exactly
what the template is doing right now, i.e. it would check the validity
of the input and would output a few links [3]. The template would then
be modified to simply link to this tool.
This should be pretty easy (I think) and it would avoid displaying all
these links inside the articles. Anyone interested?
Many thanks in advance.

[2] example: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acrylamide ; look at "N°
CAS" in the infobox and click on the [+] symbol to expand the
template.

Hello river,
this with phpmyadmin sounds good, but where can I find my LDAP password?
I know only from Mysql-password and my ssh-key.

hi,
it's now possible to access phpMyAdmin without an SSH tunnel to hemlock. the
new URL is <https://phpmyadmin.toolserver.org>. you will need to authenticate
with your toolserver username and LDAP password (*not* MySQL password) to
access phpMyAdmin, then log in to phpMyAdmin with your MySQL password.

hi,
i understand some people have had problems with the 'dictionary word match'
check when setting/changing their LDAP password. i've disabled this check now.
it still requires one character from at least three of: upper, lower, digit, punctuation.
