Dear Wiki colleagues,
I am excited to invite all members of the Kenyan chapter of Wikimedia
to participate in the Wiki Africa project that will expand and
increase the contents of Africa information in Wikipedia. Through this
invitation we hope to build a strong partnership in promoting African
content in Wikipedia.
WikiAfrica is an international collaborative project between Africa
Centre and Lettera27 that is designed to Africanize Wikipedia by
generating and expanding 30,000 articles over two years. The project
promotes a new method of acquiring and sharing knowledge that is
fully-inclusive, mainstream, intercultural and relevant to
contemporary and historic Africa. The initial two years are focused on
encouraging external Africa-based, cultural organizations, museums and
archives, as well as bloggers and journalists, to contribute their
knowledge to Wikipedia.
These initial two years focus on content related to literature,
poetry, art, cinema and other cultural products. WikiAfrica will not
exclude anything that falls outside of these categories, but focuses
most of its energy in these areas. At the same time, the WikiAfrica
project expands the African content that is already available online
and improves existing articles by combining sources and promoting the
participation of experts. WikiAfrica contributes to the aims of
Wikimedia projects online (especially the WikiProject Africa,
WikiProject African diaspora and the Africa Portal) and also works
externally with texts, quotes, images, audio and video.
The project will be approached and achieve its goals via the following
four activities:
-Create partnerships with organisations that have existing
archives that are readily accessible and that are predisposed to
placing this content online;
-Motivate the adaptation of a copyleft or Creative Commons
approach to intellectual property.
-Activate new Wikipedia users and editors in Africa through
marketing and promotion; and
-Create training tools and establish the mentorships required to
activate a new team of users and editors of Wikipedia (wikipedians).

Hello Everyone,
It was late last year when we attended the launch of the aforementioned
subject with Alex at the KICC.
Come to think of it, such information can be handy to improve articles
related to the Government of Kenya on Wikipedia.
Lets talk.

Jambo, everyone.
Great news! :)
Congratulations to you all. This wouldn't have happened without your
dedication and inspiring work! :)

Hi, folks.
Back when we created the wiki <http://wikimedia.or.ke/> for the future
Wikimedia Kenya, we set Abbas and me as "bureaucrats" (meaning users with
administrative privileges -- among which, the ability to create users in
this closed wiki), just as a starting default.
I have now made those of you who have been active on the wiki in the past
30 days "bureaucrats" on the wiki as well, so that requests for new users
don't need to depend on Abbas and me. The new bureaucrats are: Oscar
Limoke, Stephen Wanjau, Oliver Stegen (Baba Tabita) and Alex Wafula.
If you feel anyone else needs bureaucrat access, let me know (or ask one of
the new bureaucrats! :)).
However, as Spider-Man's uncle said: "With great power comes great
responsibility" -- so please don't fool around with the many things
bureaucrats can do, to avoid creating unnecessary work.
As a reminder, the way for bureaucrats to create new users for other people
is:
1. Get the new user's e-mail, and let them pick their desired username.
2. Log in to wikimedia.or.ke with your own account
3. Under "Toolbox" in the left sidebar, pick "Special Pages"
4. Click "Log in / Create account"
5. Click the "Create an account" link
6. Type in the user's desired username and e-mail. DO NOT type in anything
for the password.
7. Click the "by e-mail" button, NOT the "create account" button.
An e-mail will be sent to the new user's address, with a link to complete
the registration. Then the new user can pick their own password, and the
world is at peace.
P.S. I have created an account for Sarah Osano at her request. This is as
good an opportunity to ask one of the bureaucrats for an account on the
WMKE wiki, if you don't already have one! Be sure to specify the username
you want.
Cheers,
Asaf
