I would not be able to commit to organizational support, though I

joint bid or joint supported bid with Wikimedia New York and Boston?
That would bring in more people with experience and knowledge of event
organization, and help solidify the Wikimedia North East idea,
Thanks for the feedback. It's good to get a sense of what people can
commit, either way.
Personally, I feel it's enough for us to organize GLAM-Wiki DC in the
Spring, work towards forming a chapter (of some sorts), and build capacity
as a group.
Perhaps by 2013, we would be ready. But, if enough of us can step up now
and commit, then Wikimania 2012 could work.

All,
Please see message below from Joseph Seddon about doing a bid for 2012
Wikimania here in DC.
I know that James (Harej) has talked about this, but want more feedback
on
what DC folks think? I have some hesitations about it, as I know it's a
massive time commitment, and I'm unsure how much time I personally can
commit. But, if we have enough (people willing to do *tons* of work to
make
this happen then, I support it.
In 2009, I was on the program committee, and it was a serious commitment
of
time (10 hours/week or easily more), and I had a minor role. Here is a
list
of tasks & roles that we need people to fill.

The other critical thing would be to get the *right* venue... very
preferably very close to the Metro that can accommodate ~500 attendees
(maybe a bit more than that to be safe).
Cheers,

Could please forward this around the DC community :)
Dear DC community,
Earlier this month the bidding for Wikimania 2012 opened and I wanted to
encourage your community to consider submitting a bid. Failing to win
shouldn't stop you since so much can be learnt by bidding anyway nor
should
the rotation of Wikimania be an issue since there hasn't been a North
American wikimania since 2006.
Wikimania provides an excellent opportunity for the local community to
come
together to work on something big and it may well lead on to other
things so
please think about it. Creation of bids closes on February 6th so there
is
plenty of time to create a page and start the work on a bid.
If you need any advice please feel free to ask on this list.
Many Thanks
Joseph Seddon

I was going to have my own DC 2012 rally email but it looks like
Seddon beat me to it.
Just as I would demand much from myself, I would demand a lot from the
volunteers who would graciously assist in the effort to bring
Wikimania to Washington. Without a strong local team, however, I am
not sure if we should pursue 2012. Maybe we can get to work on 2013.
