As some of you may have already heard, Katie Filbert -- who has served as
President of Wikimedia DC since last May -- will be spending the coming
months in Europe supporting the development of the new Wikidata project (
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata). Since the geographic
requirements of this new position will make it difficult for her to
participate in local activities in DC on a regular basis, Katie will be
stepping down as President, effective today.
Nicholas Bashour, the current Vice President of Wikimedia DC, has been
elected to take the position of President for the remainder of the
year. Kevin Chen, the chair of Wikimedia DC's Legal Committee, will
replace Nicholas as Vice President. Katie will retain her current seat on
the Wikimedia DC Board of Directors.
Our deepest thanks go out to Katie for her outstanding leadership over the
course of the past year; we will all strive to live up to the example she
has set.

I'd totally be interested in this but won't be in DC in May.
Perhaps some of you would be interested. :)

Good news! I just heard from Cat Allman at Google that they are
willing to support Wikimania 2012 in DC at the diamond level (40k).
The email I received was also sent to
wikimania-sponsorship(a)wikimedia.org. It contains a purchase order
number and instructions for billing. Will things just work from here,
or do I need to do anything else?
A big thanks should go to Stefano Mazzocchi, Danny Berlin and Chris
DiBona at Google who helped make this happen.
//Ed
Some great news forwarded below; congratulations to Sarah and thanks to
everyone involved in making this happen!
Hopefully, this will lead to more GLAM outreach opportunities around the
Smithsonian in the future; we've had great luck with the Archives so far,
and we should aim to leverage that into more partnerships with the other
Smithsonian museums and centers.
Cheers,
Kirill

HI folks,
Just an FYI that my residency is not public (aka not just on Wiki :P ). The
link for the press release, please note it is a PDF file.
Thanks to all who have helped get this project off the ground. I have a lot
more work to do, so the Wiki page has some work to be done on it, but, we
just uploaded our *barnstar* today, also, which was designed by and voted
on by Smithsonian Institution staff.

from the area will gather to work with the Archives team to improve our
content on Wikipedia. We encourage you to drop by to say hi to the
dedicated Wikipedians who will be editing at this event. Their efforts will
go far to make our collections more accessible to millions of people on
Wikipedia. You can read more about the event or sign up to participate in
the editing here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/DC_30****

Hi everyone,
I believe that Aude went to this last year. Transparency Camp would be
a PERFECT place to promote Wikimania:
http://transparencycamp.org/
It's an affordable event. Hopefully some of you will attend!

Hi everyone!
Just a reminder in about a week. We'll be hosting a laid back
edit-a-thon about women in science on March 30 at the Smithsonian
Institution Archives, followed by a happy hour (you do not have to
attend the edit-a-thon to attend happy hour, of course).
Hope to see you all there, and as always please forward to interested
parties!

Hello,
I work for OCLC, a non profit that works with libraries to make
library collections and services more accessible. This summer, we will
be hosting a Wikipedian in Residence. Although the most important
qualification for a candidate is being an established Wikipedian and
someone who can communicate with others about their passion for
Wikipedia, a candidate who is also an early career archivist or
librarian would be ideal! Please check out the position description
and let me know if you have any questions! Please feel free to
forward.
