While Living in San Rafael, California. Public Library had California
History Room, With old documents, Books & Articles. With Emphasis on Local
Color & Families. There where Two Volunteers, Man & Wife, Opened door when
where on duty, guarding pecious small room, with maps & artifacts. When
Volunteer died, Public laibrary downtown could Not find next Volunteer &
simply threw collection out, as reported in marin Independent Journal.
My Point: by digitalizing important stored works, for almost No cost, works
become available 24/7, & 100% secured as digital image. making effort
worthwhile. maybe even make high density disc of stored material. vastly
better than making volunteer sit for thouisands of hours, with few viewers.
next result, contents nearly captured fopr history, yet just too much time &
narrowness of useage, while digitalized history could be much more
accessible & useful to pub;lic.

Here is a Washington Post article on tomorrow's Great American Wiknic
& DC picnic at US Marine Corps Memorial Park.
http://bit.ly/lA9WNf
See folks tomorrow!
Cheers,
Katie
Reminder that the Great American Wiknic is tomorrow! -- http://j.mp/wiknicdc
Join us tomorrow at noon at the US Marine Corps Memorial (Iwo Jima) park. We
will be over by the Netherlands Carillon. -- see map: http://j.mp/lFBKAk
Bring something to eat and share, if you want, along with plenty of water
and sunscreen. Unfortunately, "Ball playing, kite flying, and other
recreational activities are not permitted on the Memorial grounds, including
the surrounding fields" [1] so we will just relax and enjoy the sunshine.
Afterwards, for anyone interested, we may walk around the nearby Theodore
Roosevelt Island.
Cheers,
Katie

Pay heed, citizens!
The D.C. branch of the Great American Wiknic will be on Saturday, June
25 at the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Park) in Arlington, by
the Rosslyn metro on the orange and blue lines!
This is the picnic assembled by its attendees. What will YOU bring?

Dear DCmedians,
I had the pleasure of attending the wiki society meeting last night -
a very well run meeting, something you should be proud of.
I mentioned the idea of a 'librarylab' which was warmly received at
the DPLA conference today, which I hope to develop with a few partners
as a proposed piece of future DPLA infrastructure: something that
could be set up in any city that is introducing its public and other
libraries to new library and collection tools [such as might be part
of a DPLA platform]. A demo of such a library lab would be developed
in DC.
I asked the Wiki Society to consider being a local partner in this
demo-project. while all costs will be covered by participating hosts
or libraries, we need a partner group based in dc to help coordinate
local meetings. The reason to have a dem site in DC is that the next
large DPLA event will be hosted in DC in October, when good proposals
will be showcased.
The specific proposal is below. I will elaborate on it online after
getting some more initial feedback from would-be users. I will also
send further notes on yesterday's meeting this weekend, since this
will not be the last such meeting held in DC and ther eare many
overlaps with wikimedia's mission.
Thanks to everyone who came out to dinner; it was lovely. [and
brainstorming about wikimania is always fun!]

We plan to define a LibraryLab, a standalone hackspace for people to
work on digitization, annotation, collaborative publishing, and use of
library and collection-making tools and tech for personal projects and
research.
A LibLab will be a space for librarians and other community members to
learn about new tools, to develop personalized workspaces, and to run
classes and workshops for others. It will include physical tools such
as cameras and scanners and computers, and software tools for
research, classification, publication and remixing.
We will develop a prototype lab in DC, colocated with a local
university or tech incubator, with testing and feedback from public
and university librarians in the area.
Hi folks, I wanted to join your conversation after seeing the DPLA Beta
Sprint proposal SJ submitted.
My name is Nate Hill, I'm a 'Web Librarian' at the San Jose Public Library.
Before working here, I spent 10 years at the Brooklyn Public Library in NYC.
I worked on a flexible, storefront library project in the DUMBO neighborhood
in Brooklyn NY some years ago, and have been writing/preaching about the
idea ever since.
Here's an old blog post about the Outpost work-
http://natehill.wordpress.com/2008/03/15/library-outposts-a-new-service-mod…
<http://natehill.wordpress.com/2008/03/15/library-outposts-a-new-service-mod…>and
here's a more recent piece about it in the context of both the DPLA and the
IMLS/MacArthur Learning Labs projects.
http://plablog.org/2011/06/two-more-reasons-for-library-outposts-the-dpla-a…
The FabLab co-creative approach is absolutely a logical extension of what
the Outpost was/is supposed to be. I'll add some more descriptive stuff to
the wiki, but for now I really wanted to say hello and offer to be a part of
your crew (though I'm not 100% sure what that even means).
Cheers!

Following discussions arising from Tuesday's Board of Directors'
meeting and conversations with Samuel Klein (user:sj), I started to
seriously consider organizing an online social media campaign around
the theme "I'm a Wikipedian"
The campaign, should we decide to take it on, would utilize
twitter/facebook/youtube/other social media outlets. We would
encourage users to talk about how Wikipedia fits into their everyday
life. Participants need not be regular Wikipedia editors. They could
be scientists, artists, kids, CEOs, nurses, whoever, and their use of
Wikipedia could range from looking up a fact about a city they're
visiting, to uploading spectacular images or illustrations they've
done, to organizing a project on updating information about the
Chesapeake Bay, etc.
Participants would submit a short video (15-30 seconds) about
themselves and how they've been using Wikipedia. At the end of the
message, they would say "I'm a such and such (i.e. student, math
teacher, scientist, photographer, etc.), and I'm a Wikipedian,"
followed by the slogan "Your World: Your Wikipedia" and the Wikipedia
logo, if we're allowed to use it.
Hopefully, if the project goes well enough, then you can have people
from all over the world send in videos in various languages. The goal
is to show that we are all Wikipedians, no matter what our background
is.
Hello everyone,
The Wiki Society of Washington, DC Inc. is looking for volunteers to serve
on our Fundraising Committee.
The committee will act as a central point for organizing our ongoing general
fundraising efforts. Its activities will include overseeing sponsor
outreach, preparing grant applications, and implementing public solicitation
campaigns.
The committee's responsibilities will not include Wikimania-specific
fundraising, which will continue to be handled by the Wikimania Committee.
If anyone would like to serve on the committee, or can suggest someone else
who might be interested, please let me know.
Regards,
Kirill
