Dear Wikimedians,
We at Wikimedia DC extend our best wishes to you during this holiday
season and the coming new year. This year has been one of the most
exciting times for Wikimedians in the Washington, DC region. With the
recent establishment of Wikimedia DC as an official chapter of the
Wikimedia Foundation, over 16 million people from an area covering
nearly 82000 square miles (212,000 square kilometers) have the chance
to come together to meet, exchange ideas, engage in cultural and
educational programming, and participate in other exciting
opportunities. We are constantly working to bring a variety of social
and educational events to you in the new year, not the least of which
is Wikimania 2012. From engaging the international community in the
capital of the United States to bringing culturally- and
artistically-focused events to libraries and museums across the
region, Wikimedia DC will strive to expand and engage a wide variety
of audiences in order to further the mission of making knowledge
available to everyone.
Wherever you are in the world, we invite you to join us in the new
year. Knowledge has no borders or boundaries, and neither do the goals
we strive to reach. We hope Wikimedia DC will be as important a part
of your year as it will to us. And, of course, we hope to see everyone
here in Washington, DC for Wikimania 2012 in July.
>From all of us here at Wikimedia DC, happy holidays and happy new year.
Sincerely,
Wikimedia DC Board of Directors
Hi everyone,
I am co-planning GLAMcamp DC with Lori Phillips (the new US Cultural
Partnerships Coordinator) and Pete Forsyth (a fellow Wikimedia DC
member). I've posted the announcement here previously. We have two
evenings for events, one is Friday evening, which is thus far, being
privately sponsored by an anonymous donor, at the Smithsonian for
GLAMcamp attendees and Smithsonian staff. The second, is still open for
Saturday night. Katie (Aude) expressed interest in having WM DC take a
role of potential sponsorship in the weekend, and we emailed her about
an event sponsorship.
This event has the opportunity of being a "meet-up" which brings
together those attending GLAMcamp - which will feature Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Foundation staff, and museum professionals from around the
country, and regional Wikimedians. A very impressive group of attendees
will be at the conference, making this Saturday night event an
opportunity for Wikimedia DC not only to solicit memberships as "the
nation's Chapter" (so to say), but to also promote Wikimania and the
"GLAM" theme of the conference to museum professionals who will be
attending. This also could be an opportunity to bring in potential
donors for Wikimania, from the open source and cultural communities.
(The power of inviting the right people!)
You can learn more about GLAMcamp DC and it's agendas here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAMcamp_DC (The attendee list is
pending and not publicly posted at this time.)
I do hope that Wikimedia DC, and it's membership, will consider
sponsoring such an event, as I think events like this will be imperative
to not only strengthening the community (as a similar event was
sponsored by WMNL at GLAMcamp Amsterdam), but, could also be a powerful
tool for Wikimania support via volunteers, donors and sponsorships.
Thank you for your consideration,
Sarah Stierch

Hi Katie,
<trim>
During the planning of the event and the grant application, we have
developed a pretty specific and ambitious set of goals for the event,
which will determine how we structure the limited time available. Sarah
has plans for a Friday night event; Saturday night, however, may still
be open for a Wikimedia DC event.
If Wikimedia DC would like to sponsor a party or evening event during,
and as part of, GLAMcamp DC, here are the things that would make it mesh
well with the rest of the event:
* Saturday night, Feb. 11; timed and located in a way that gives people
adequate time to return to hostel, and have dinner before or after
* Sponsorship should cover at least one drink for at least 30 people,
plus some appetizers (we estimated roughly $400)
* Strong emphasis on time for socializing/networking, in a way that
accommodates both GLAMcamp participants and cultural institution
drop-ins. A reserved space for our group that is reasonably quiet,
allowing for conversation, would be best.
* Brief introductory remarks (limited to about 5-minutes) to introduce
Wikimedia DC, Chapters model, whatever you think is best.

I'd like us to do another social-only meetup soonish. We already have the
art edit-a-thon and social meetup afterwards on Dec 17th.
So, I propose something in early/mid January and have suggested some dates:
* Sunday, January 1 (yes, it's New Year's Day, 5pm)
* Tuesday, January 3 (evening)
* Wednesday, January 4 (evening)
* Saturday or Sunday, January 14 or 15 (5pm)
Please comment on the wiki talk page if you have any preferences:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Meetup/DC_27
BTW - we might do a scan-a-thon NARA meetup on January 7 and tentatively
working to schedule something at the Pratt Library in Baltimore on the
weekend of January 14. But, think many folks (me included) like the
social-only meetups too.
Cheers,
Katie

Is there interest in doing regularly scheduled monthly social meetups,
like Boston does? separate from special GLAM and other events?
If so, any preferences as to when to schedule them? where?
Cheers,
Katie

Everyone,
Today, the Wikimedia DC Board of Directors appointed Kevin Chen to fill the
seat previously held by Robert Platt. Kevin is a long-time Wikipedian as
well as a member of our Legal Committee, where he has provided invaluable
assistance as we proceed with our plans for the coming year. He will serve
on the Board until the next scheduled election, which will take place in
September.
Cheers,
Kirill

DC area Wikimedians, OSM mappers, and anyone else curious about mapping are
invited to join us at the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Library on
Saturday.
We can meet at 11am in the Library Lab (first floor, southwest corner of
the building in the Business / Tech division), and best if you bring your
laptop.
Depending on the weather and what folks want to do, we can go out around
Chinatown / Penn Quarter, map and update OSM.
Other options include:
* Demonstrate how to upload GPS tracks (though no GPS required for
mapping).
* The more technically inclined are welcome to come and hack on OSM.
* We can finish up with the building imports, which requires little or no
technical expertise.
* Anything else mapping-related.
In the end, better OSM maps = better infobox and other maps in Wikipedia. :)
Cheers,
Katie
