Hi all,
I just wanted to let you all know that Friday was my last day as Wikipedian
in Residence at the US National Archives. I would like to thank you all who
helped make the project a success. It has been a great year, and I think we
accomplished a lot more than either I or NARA had hoped for at the start,
especially importantly in helping to change the culture of the institution
and gaining several advocates for our cause from the ranks of NARA's
professionals, including David Ferriero himself. I am a little sad to see
it end, but I am grateful to have been given the opportunity.
NARA is not going to be hiring a new Wikipedian in Residence in the short
term—my leaving ultimately came down to human resources issues, not because
I wanted to go or they wanted me to leave. There is a possibility that they
will create a permanent position if they can get approval, but that may
take a long time. In any case, the institution is still quite
Wikipedia-friendly, and I expect them to remain allies in some capacity.
And, of course, I still intend to remain involved in GLAM efforts, whether
it is here in DC or elsewhere. :-)
Dominic

Hey all,
As many of you already know we're going to be holding an editathon/training
palooza at the Natural History Museum on October 12. Any of you wonderful,
experienced Wikipedians already planning to go to the event think you can
help with the training bit? You'll still be able to partake of the tours
(which we have more information on, now. The meetup page has been updated).
Please let Sarah Snyder, the amazing Smithsonian Wikipedian without whom
this event wouldn't be possible and who is cc'ed to this email, and I know
if you are willing!
Sincerely,
Lisa

I've just been told about this edit-a-thon event at UMD on Tuesday, October 16 from 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM. It appears to be organized by faculty personnel with no involvement from Wikimedia DC; however, I think it would be worthwhile for some of us to attend to get the word out about our organization.
More information: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/University_of_Maryland_Edit-A…>.
Go Terps!

If you are interested in GLAM stuff or other aspects of digital culture
heritage, there is a meetup on Thursday at Stetsons (U St). It is not a
Wikimedia DC event but nonetheless sounds interesting.

Hi everyone,
You may have seen my forwarded email regarding the death of Wikipedian
User:LarryMorseDCOhio
You can read a touching announcement made on his talk page by colleague
Barb Goodman:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:LarryMorseDCOhio#Sad_News
He died in January, and did attend meetups in the DC area, including
2011's Wiknic and the first NARA meetup.
I encourage you to expand, and even add a photo of him, to the memorial
page on Wikipedia devoted to our Wiki-brothers and sisters who have
passed away:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deceased_Wikipedians#Larry_Morse_.28…
I hope you will attend the memorial event in his memory. I am in
California now, so unfortunately I am unable to attend.
Thank you Larry for the contributions you made to Wikipedia.
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
NatureServe, a non-profit organization that connects with science with
conservation, is hosting an event on October 30 in memory of one of your
former DC Wikipedians, Larry Morse. Larry used to work for NatureServe,
and we all recall his involvement in Wikipedia. I don't know if you knew
Larry, but we hope that you will distribute the attached invitation and
that we will see some DC Wikipedians on October 30. Please feel free to
reach out if you need more information or have any questions, and to
distribute the invitation to other groups that you think might want to
attend.
Thank you,
Erin

Hi all,
I'm the UMD prof whose class is organizing the 10/16 edit-a-thon. I've met
some of you at Wikimedia DC events and Wikimanias over the years. It would
be great to see/meet anyone who can make it out to College Park on a
weekday afternoon. Many thanks!
All best,
Melanie
