The tech news indicates we can press Alt+1 as a shortcut to insert
replaceable variables.
This clearly does not work : I just hear a "beep" when I press it in the
Translation editor, with my French AZERTY keyboard on Chrome for Windows.
The shortcut is possibly not mapped (or the update still not deployed on
Meta).
Such shortcuts interact frequently very badly with input method editors
needed for some languages, so these shortcuts should be localisable too
(this is not the case, the shortcut is apparently fixed). The Alt key is
also not the one used on MacOS.

Hello,
the latest issue of your favourite tech newsletter is ready for
translation at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/
News/2014/02
The newsletter will be sent to subscribers on Monday morning; all
translations existing by that time will be posted on wikis in those
languages.
There might be some edits tomorrow, but the content should generally
remain fairly stable -- I will of course let you know as soon as a final
version of the issue is published.
Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns. I
appreciate your help, feedback and involvement.
Tomasz
