You guys probably seen this already, but you have seen the cool stories
that were placed on the Case STudies page you guys created:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Success_Stories_-_How_has_Wikimedia_Changed_…
ROCK ON!
I'm taken some of the quotes to be included in Wikimania Press
kit...However, I've not used the names, and simply put Wikipedian User
and Teacher, Wikipedian User and Father, etc.
This is awesome...sorry, when I went to the page, I had no idea it had
grown so much! also, Would someone be willing to follow up with the
following and actually try to contact and get a direct quote from
Professor Isola and Prof. Adewole. Maybe conduct a short interview? this
would be a cool case study to actual write...ie about a page.
Let me know if someone wants to follow up with this.
News about Yoruba wikipedia on Radio
News about the Yoruba wikipedia was broadcast on Radio today (11th June,
2007) at Orisun FM Radio, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Both Prof Isola and Prof
Adewole who commented on the wikipedia were of the opinion that now that
many Yoruba students are used to the internet, a wikipedia written in
Yoruba will encourage them to develp more interest in the language.

Please send agenda items for next week to me (privately, so as not to
unnecessaily clutter the list - hit reply and change the address or
something) so that we can have a more organised meeting.
It still went well, just could have been better.

Hello,
Cary, I could have written to you directly, but I think it may be that I
find help directly on this list. If so, this shall avoid loss of your
time as intermediary.
If no one is available to help on this list, I would love if you can
look for a volunteer :-)
Here is the deal
WMF is organizing a board retreat in Taipei, immediately prior to
Wikimania (1 and 2).
People invited are essentially active board members, prior board members
if not reelected, advisory board members, ED and possibly GC if
available by then. So, roughly 25 people.
The organizers are Angela, Achal (adv board member), myself... and new
comer is Manon, who will be our facilitator. And somehow Theodonarian,
as organizer of Wikimania :-)
The event will take place in the Wikimania building (room not defined yet).
Some meals are already planned, others will be free time. Accomodation
has been dealt with.
We have no sponsor yet and it would be great if we can find one (but if
not, well, I guess we'll survive).
We already drafted a budget but we have no letter to send yet (Achal is
volunteering)
No program yet, but I should have a draft soon
What I am looking for ?
Two people to help.
* one to help on the communication documents for the retreat
* one to help in finding sponsors
This will be done with the participation/help of the current team of course
Regarding help on sponsorship, it would be essentially working with
Achal to set up an email. We have a bunch of suggested contacts, but we
need to collect references. To send the letters. To follow up in someone
is interested, probably with the support of Cary.
Time: it should not take a lot of time, but if someone is interested, it
would be best if it were someone who already helped on the WM sponsorship.
This help is required now.
Regarding the communication stuff, we need
* a document with a listing of all participants, as well as their bio. I
was a few days ago at a meeting for a similar-type event, and I think
the layout is just perfectly reusable (minus an orange flashing
background color ruining printer resources). Mixed up with the visuals
of Wikimania, it should not take too much time I think. All information
is already available, so it may be done any time. Job is essentially
establishing a layout, collecting the information and setting that up in
an electronic document.
* a document with time/location planning. Listing times of gathering,
breaks, lunch, etc... as well as useful information (location of
meeting, location of meals, contacts - phone etc...). Information is
partially available and is to be collected from I or Theodonarian.
Perhaps could be done in 1-2-3 weeks.
* a document with the topics/programme. Information not yet available.
But if layout is previously done in other documents, should be very quick.
If you are interested or can pass along the info, I will be happy.
No confidentiality requirements.

I have just posted the text at the end of this message to Wikinews'
watercooler (equivalent of village pump).
I'm really looking for input here - use the list to keep us up to date
with what you're doing if you choose to get involved with this project!
So, I'll start with this: who's interested in helping?
A quick brief:
Wikinews is like Wikipedia, but for news. It runs well, and embraces
original reporting (OR) performed by contributors. This can take the
form of interviews, attending events, or many others. In order to
secure such opportunities, contributors need to show themselves to be a
member of a tangible organisation - hence the accreditation system was
set up n:WN:AP. The community votes on who to certify as a Wikinews
reporter, and when they pass such a vote, users are sent press papers.
These papers can then be used to show that a user does have a real
reason to interview someone/attend an event as press.
In many cases, these press papers are needed to obtain press passes for
individual events (such as G8, to which a Wikinews reporter was able to
go). Currently, the origin of the press papers can seen to be in the
USA, with that being the home of WMF (although WMF doesn't do the
accreditations!).
The idea of this project is to encourage the local chapters to take a
role in this accreditation process by providing local papers and helping
to get places for people at specific events, as well as to build up a
community and start to provide a decent use for the chapters themselves!
ComProj members who want to be involved will probably be helping to
formulate a process involving chapters, which can be spread out to them
all, and, if they wish, can get involved in having their chapters
support the system (by becoming the "nominated body" (or something) for
Wikinews in their chapter). Of course, like anything with ComProj -
it's up to you how little or how much you do!
OK - that brief wasn't so "quick", but I hope it gave you a good idea of
what we're getting at here. I'll start a list of those involved with
myself on it :).
Interested members:
Martinp23 - Will help with all stages (and is trying to organise the
sub-project :-)). Can liaise with wikimedia-uk, and be the contact there.
Please remember - you can do as much or little as you want. It'll help
me if you can express your interest to me either on list or elsewhere,
so I've got an idea of who wants to help :-).
I'll put something on meta either tonight or tomorrow, depending on how
much of an insomniac I am tonight :P
Thanks,
Martin

Accreditation via chapters
Tonight, during the weekly ComProj meeting
(log), I brought
up the suggestion that we (ComProj) could help to get chapters to assist
in accreditation. The advantages of this are:
# Stronger local community
# A real purpose for the chapters
# Many more journalism and press-pass related opportunities
# Probably some others I don't know about
I'm post here to seek your ideas on what we (Wikinews) want from such a
system. I'll relay messages left here to the ComProj mailing list, and
vice versa - ComProj will be able to help to set up a system, and
publicise it to the board and the various chapters and other related
groups. Any thoughts? Martinp23 22:29, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
:Some thoughts brought up in the meeting were:
:* Identity verification may need to take place, ideally coordinated by
chapters
:* This is a massive opportunity for all
:* (Nominated bodies in) chapters can try to liaise with govt.
organisations to get passes to government events, for national press passes
:Much more - read the log :). I realise that I'm replying to my own
message, but wanted to separate this from my short introduction. So,
let's thrash out some ideas! Martinp23 22:29, 3 July

Hey Jenny.
There was a netsplit that meant we were on one half of the network,
you on the other, until both got reconnected.
Ah well!

Hello,
from a chapter point of view, may I ask what this position will exactly include?
Liaison between chapter media contacts and ComProj?
Liaison for combined WMF-Chapters communication issues?
Or did I misunderstand it completely?
