All,
This week's meeting effectively didn't happen as there were so few of
us there. I don't think it is fair to expect people to come, which for
some requires some effort due to timing and the like, when we are not
having a proper meeting. Therefore I would like it if we could decide
before Wednesday whether or not we need a meeting. Please reply if you
have any agenda items to be discussed. If I do not get any replies, I
will cancel the meeting to avoid people's dissapointment :-)
Thanks,
Sean
There was a page I created (research & Polls) that was on the comproj
website. It has been removed from the homepage (which is fine), but they
the information that I had there was also removed. It had a list of
studies i had been collecting for communication materials.
Can someone help me find this lost information. The page now seems to be
non existing:

Sean,
This is why I'm entirely disorientated,
Off the front page http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
I click on Comms Projects Group http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ComProj
Where I click on Projects.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communication_Projects_Group/Projects
And get nothing.
I'm sure you want newbies to go here.

And the same can be said for the other links. No?

Hello all,
Following the decisions on Wednesday I have changed the ComProj pages
around to meet our new, deformalised structure. I am tired and thus
probably haven't made things as clear as they should be so if someone
could take a look and neaten things up that would be great.
Let's see if this works :)

Dear Sean,
My thanks for your guidance and patience, and my apologees for taking so
long. So far as email allowing 'really clear comms'. If it were 121 yeah OK.
But we are trying to help idiots like me get ORIENTATED and after doing so,
be a little useful. After going through the many singular (open) elists,
I've gotta say no, it's as clear as mud.
I look at Cormac (as one example) helping to orientate people on the uni
list
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikiversity-l/2007-November/000247.html
And then ask some real pertinent questions
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikiversity-l/2007-November/000248.html
And then I look though (just) this list where I see Sandy Ordenez ask for
some help with a blogging project, send a "yes, I'd love to help", and
receive an email to a group, including yourself that talks about another
'internal group'. (" Another Wikipedian - Simon has agreed to help out with
the edit wikipedia/blogging project. Schiste, when you can give me an
update, so I can email to internal/comcom etc.) And then nothing. No doubt
there are a thousand emails going on, which might make it clear what's
happening. And the IRC meeting take place, without the records being
(easily) found, and if they are, are so arcane, a newbie would have a hard
time making some sense of them.
Through all of this, I see the Foundation looking to employ more staff in
San Fran to do with outreach & partnership development. Meanwhile christophe
doesn't understand how my mail might even pertain to this list.
OK, 'grumpy old man' is a good description. But I see you (and so many
tothers) working your butt off, and while a wiki has proved quite fantastic
in developing an encyclopedia/dictionary that has changed every
institution's idea of what the web could be for, it's global communities are
hindered by using comms tools built for an age gone by.
Come on mate. You don't need to be told this by an old man. I've read too
much of what you've (and others) have written to imagine what you could do
by using comms tools that were modern. All I'm saying is that if you (and
the bright minds around here) can scope them, we can surely find a partner
who will sponsor them.
My regards to all,
simonfj
ComProj has long been a redirect to Communication Projects Group, so
that hasn't changed. The projects page is what I changed the most; go
take a look.
As for forums etc., I understand where you are coming from, but I also
don't see what is wrong with e-mail - surely pretty much everyone on
the web knows how to use e-mail, and it allows really clear
communication?
Thank you for your contribution,
Sean

Hey Sean,
Just had a look. I’m totally exhausted too. Talk about mixing directories.
But I can see where you’re going. Goodoh.
Reading between the lines, we have been here. HYPERLINK
"http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ComProj"http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ComPr
oj
And now we’re here. HYPERLINK
"http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communication_Projects_Group"http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communication_Projects_Group
So I guess this is what yuall discussed at the last IRC meeting although
there is no record yet.
Look I can only suggest to you that we’ve got to start thinking outside the
square(s). There comes a time where a wiki can’t be all things to all
people, and the comms tools wikipedians are offered (IRC, elists) are just
past their use bys.. It comes down to this. HYPERLINK
"http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communication_Projects_Group/Projects/Discus
sion_Outlets"http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communication_Projects_Group/Pro
jects/Discussion_Outlets I’m asking you to think from the “discussion
inlets” perspective, where every inlet will be based around some group or
committee.
Ultimately, just like a wiki, if you give people the right tools, and make
their use simple enough, and show them through using it, they’ll find their
own level. Where a wiki has proved just so incredibly successful for
producing a library, we need something just as simple to use which supports
their communication, and by this I mean both the asynchronous stuff – where
I’ve pointed to sitepoint.com’s forums and blogs as an example – but also
their real time comms, which range from an msg type tool all the way through
to accessgrid-type rooms.or meeting space a la HYPERLINK
"http://labspace.open.ac.uk/"http://labspace.open.ac.uk/ If it needs a
manual, forget it.
So as a starting point can I again suggest that we consider designing a
forum. The integration with instant messaging tools can be something which
is considered while it grows legs. And could we (me) see about getting a
sponsor (and development partner) for “it”, because the higher bandwidth
stuff will blow any budget even if it’s halfway as successful as Wikipedia.
All the best,
simonfj

Hello all,

Dear Sean,
I was reading
“So how do we solve this? I think that we need to make some fundamental
decisions, as a group, about how we want ComProj to work. Do we need
to formalise, bring in membership requirements (i.e. doing work, not
that people should be qualified to join initially), or do we need to
stop worrying about set projects and simply have a pool of people to
access via the mailing list. Unsurprisingly, since I am chair and we are in
this situation, I am stumped. Ideas welcome”.
I think the Foundation has to take a very different approach to its comms,
and specifically the tools it uses to communicate between its groups, and
with members. Mail lists have been fine to date but these days, due to
social networking sites (I.e online environments), peoples’ expectations
have been raised. Two things have been noted around here lately. The first
is spam generated by (your) mail lists = a very common complaint. The second
is the silo effect caused by having a bunch of lists. The third problem,
from my perspective, is the great confusion (and waste) in having my inbox
filled with huge nos. of messages which never seem to relate to one another.
It’s simply overwhelming.
I’ve had a brief conversation with the guys on the UK list (mainly re;
Wikimania) and made a few suggestions. (using an old sandy dorotheo mail
account to keep the spam on another machine). I’ve also done a brief survey
of my mates to see if they’ve noticed the “discussion” tab on Wikimedia
articles. They hadn’t.
Look I’d love to help; not only in improving the approach to comms tools,
but also in getting a large sponsor(s) to be involved with the improvement.
I’ll point you at this environment, as an e.g of what I’m suggesting
straight up. A picture tells a 1000 words. HYPERLINK
"http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/"http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/ It’s
about 250 on Alexa’s top 500.
One thing I need to know though. Wikipediafoundation doesn’t ask for
advertising/sponsorships, which is a good thing (I feel). But if we are to
see its members’ comms have the same global effect as it’s libraries, then
the Foundation really does need to consider partnering with some global IT
companies. Either that, or partnering with some (other) NREN’s (like
SURFnet) or/and their National libraries. If it goes the first way, then
(logically) it makes sense to get one (or a number of) global IT company to
be host to the Wiki content (and comms). i.e it would own no boxes and have
no bandwidth concerns. If it goes the second way, then it acts a “clearing
house/library” for a bunch of potential (global) research programmes (in
different languages). Members would go for research grants in global groups.
(If there’s another approach, I’d love to hear it).
It makes no difference which way the foundation might want to go. I’m sure
it’s aims, and its model, are true. The question now is, at least for this
bunny, how it might do for the “real time” world what it has done for the
“asynchronous” one. By this I mean, how can it put some shape on these kinds
of IP comms tools.
At the thin end = HYPERLINK

n.open.ac.uk/mod/resource/view.php?id=149401
At the fat end = HYPERLINK
"http://www.accessgrid.org/"http://www.accessgrid.org/
And give their content a memory.
All the best,
Simonfj
PS I note “The Communications Project Group is dedicated to unifying
individuals”. Hmmm. And there I was thinking it just aimed to help global
groups to communicate.
