Dear Doc, dear everyone,
I had such a nice time visiting with you, Doc, at Winedale and under the cowboy art in
Carmine. The news of Edith is sad indeed. But I am glad to report that the pink, red,
white, and GREEN roses thriving with their expert irrigation system are putting out plenty
of blossoms to honor not just Virginia but all our lost ones equally. The cedar signs in
the barn struck me as a lovely idea, too, and Craig, Kathy, Stan, Bruce--all: Doc told me
in detail about the upcoming performance of his hilarious-sounding little play. How i wish
i could see it! By hook or by crook, though, i will be there for the memorial gathering,
whenever it is. wonderful ideas flying all around.
Met Barbara in the office, too, and she is just as nice as Doc and Clayton reported.
Spring is my new favorite season at Winedale, even though i remember fall being just as
good back in the coon's age of 1972...
Love to you all,
Alice

Today Winedale was alive with kids from ACE Academy (Austin) spread
across the fields sounding out sonnet lines, then going into the barn
to perform them. It was a very special treat. But the best treat was
meeting Alice there, talking in the sunshine, checking out Virginia's
roses (they are doing fine), wandering in the theater to watch the
kids, having lunch together in Carmine, unhurried. So unhurried in
fact that we forgot to talk about what we met for: the proposed
Newsletter. We will get going on that. We also talked a bit about
memorials for former Sh at W students who have left us. It is time to
do that. I'm thinking about 8" x 10" Texas cedar pieces routed with
names and dates, placed in the theater "vestibule" along the
horizontal beams supporting the roof supports. My first thought was
to plant trees for each of them, but I am concerned about the daily
care of those. I thought also about remembering folks whose
contributions we remember with great love: Miss Ima, Delphine,
Virginia, Rosa Lee, Rollie. I learned only today that Edith Klump,
who cooked for us at Lauderdale, died last Friday, was buried on
Sunday. Edith was Ronnie Klump's mom. Please send ideas.
Cheers,
Doc
