Hi all
I’m looking for feedback and endorsement for my Wikimedia Foundation PEG
grant to be Wikimedian in Residence at UNESCO
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/MrjohnCummings/UNESCO_Wikimedian…>.
I’d very much appreciate if you would have a look, I want to include as
many different projects and languages as possible and connect editors in
each country with local UNESCO partners. I'd very much like to make some
local Wikimedia contacts in countries where Wikipedia Zero is available.
The big thing for me around education is working with UNESCO and it's
partners to release content under an open license and for this to act as a
model for other UN organisations. I think this will be especially
interesting to them with relation to Wikipedia Zero
<http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Zero>.
I ran a pilot project that resulted in the images found in the Wikimedia
Commons category Images from the archive of UNESCO
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_the_archive_of_UNES…>,
here are a few examples:
-
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:The_Soda_volcano,_Oromia,_Ethiopia.jpg>
The Soda volcano, Oromia, Ethiopia.
-
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rubbles_of_the_cathedral_after_the_earth…>
Rubble of the cathedral after the earthquake that hit the Capital Port
au Prince just before 5 pm on 12 January 2010.
-
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Young_monk,_wearing_a_special_costume,_D…>
Young monk, wearing a special costume, July-August 1991, Sikkim, India.
-
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sabha,6,_getting_ready_to_walk_to_school…>
Sabha, 6, getting ready to walk to school from her house on the borders
eastern Gaza strip, where she and her family are still living in tents.
-
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mohana_fishermen_hunters_use_lures_from_…>
Not far from Mohenjo-Daro (or Mohenjodaro) - These Mohana
fishermen/hunters use lures from real birds to catch more birds. They will
either eat them or sell them. Mohenjodaro, Pakistan.
-
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Priest_of_rock-Hewn_Churches_of_Lalibela…>
Priest of rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela, a high place of Ethiopian
Christianity, still today a place of pilmigrage and devotion.
If you think this is a worthwhile project please click this link

and
then click the endorse button.
Many thanks
John

Hi all
I wanted to outline that applications to Wikimania Scholarship opened a
few days ago.
It is probably worth outlining these two points:
1. "Based on the applicant's home country, each applicant will be
categorized as either a Global North or Global South
<https://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_South> applicant, with the
/total number of scholarships distributed between the Global North and
Global South being set at 25% and 75% respectively."
/2. Unlike in previous years, activity within the Wikimedia movement
will be the main criteria for evaluation. Participation in non-Wikimedia
free knowledge, free software, collaborative or educational initiatives
is a plus but is no longer a requirement; individuals who solely
contribute to such areas are no longer encouraged to apply. Please see
the FAQ for more information on eligibility./
/If you were deeply involved in Wikimedia the past year and would like
to get the opportunity to talk about your activities in Mexico, to
listen to other participants experience and to build new projects, do
consider applying for a travel grant.

Interesting! Is there a summary available in English or French? Are you
in touch with Ibou? It would be great to have him here on the list.

Hello,
Cet article http://www.radioalgerie.dz/news/fr/article/20150120/27401.html
N'est pas foncièrement mauvais, il est même assez pertinent sur certains points mais passe totalement à côté des spécificités de Wikipedia en Français et en Arabe. Peut être une opportunité pour les wikimediens algériens de prendre contact?

The abbreviation, WLA which we know to be wiki loves Africa happens to
clash with another event known as Wiki loves Art.
Since wiki loves art begun before wiki loves Africa, its natural for the
Wiki loves team and or anyone referring to the event to use the
abbreviation, WLAf for the Wiki Loves Africa whiles WLA remains for the
Wiki Loves Art.
I hope that wouldn't be any difficult for us to do.
A friend drew my attention to that clash recently. Didn't notice that
myself.
Thanks.
