Dear Community members,
Transitioning WikiIndaba online this year offers an unparalleled
opportunity to expand representation but it also requires participants to
have access to a quality internet connection to meaningfully and fully
engage and contribute.
THE CONNECTIVITY SCHOLARSHIP
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiIndaba_conference_2021/Scholarships>
For Wiki Indaba 2021, the first virtual edition of WikiIndaba Online, we
are launching a Connectivity Scholarship to provide direct financial
support for participants to connect and engage.
Session organizers, speakers, and participants can apply for 2 levels of
funding support ($50 USD or $100 USD), which they can use for:
- Direct connecting: Purchasing internet data or contributing to the
cost of internet access and use;
- Support connecting: Travel to access computers and internet points;
- Secure connecting: Purchasing privacy screens or VPNs;
- Other support: Cost of childcare or other services that enable active
participation.
Apply Now
You can apply to receive funding by clicking
https://bit.ly/wikiindaba2021scholarships The deadline for scholarship
applications is October 7, 2021 at 11:59pm EAT.
This is the first time a fund of this nature has been offered at Wiki
Indaba. We deem it necessary as we transition from the familiarity of
in-person conferences of yesteryear to the possibilities we are about to
explore at the online Wiki Indaba 2021. We welcome your questions and
feedback. You can reach out to our team by email at wikiuganda(a)gmail.com
Kind regards,
Geoffrey Kateregga, on behalf of the Wiki Indaba 2021 Local Organizing Team
Hello – The Africa Narrative submitted a note of introduction several
months ago which the African Wikimedian Digest kindly disseminated. I’d be
grateful if you could once again put out a notice on our behalf, this time
in support of our search for a Wikimedian-in-Residence. Thank you very
much.
Michelle
The Africa Narrative (TAN), a non-profit that develops singular, high
impact initiatives in support of African creatives and the African cultural
and creative industries, is seeking a Wikimedian-in-Residence to be part of
an exciting Wikipedia project that TAN is spearheading. The AfroCreatives
Wikiproject aims to support and mobilize creatives and professionals from
the African creative sector, as well as enthusiasts more broadly, to
contribute and enhance knowledge on Wikipedia about Africa’s creative
economy. Its inaugural effort will target the film sectors of Egypt,
Nigeria, Rwanda, and Senegal.
We are seeking a dynamic individual with a track record of editing
Wikipedia on Africa-related content and with a passion for African arts and
culture. The position is remote and can be based anywhere on the
continent. Applications will be accepted through October 7th. More
information on the role and how to apply can be found here
<https://www.theafricanarrative.org/wir-application>.

*Molweni, Avuxeni, Hello, #HackUrCulture Community & Happy Heritage Month!*
In this week’s mailer, we’re giving you a quick recap of the #HUC2020
hackathon winners and funded projects.
The #HackUrCulture2020 hackathon gathered a community of professional
creatives, software developers, researchers and cultural heritage experts
to collaborate on solving a set of challenges.
Using internet channels to find each other and form teams, the teams then
had to self organise, engage in training and workshops to better understand
the challenges so they could develop and build solutions across the
different problem tracks.
The Sub-Saharan African leg of the 2020 Hack Ur Culture (HUC) hackathon
resulted in a one-month long pan-African digital sprint, virtually hosted
with individual participants from 24 African countries.
[image: EMAILER STRAP 05 - Exhibition and Winners]
In November 2020 we saw the virtual exhibition go live in collaboration
with the Fak’ugesi - African Digital Innovation Festival
<https://d2Z0nD04.eu1.hubspotlinksfree.com/Btc/W3+113/d2Z0nD04/VWGpvM8jZ1mzW…>
where the winning projects were showcased.
For the inaugural Hack Ur Culture, the HUC committee opted for 3 prize
categories to ensure sufficient latitude when assessing the various
projects. The 3 categories were as follows:
- Overall Winners: 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place
- Most Compelling Project: 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place
- Best Team Spirit: 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place
To assess the different projects submitted to HUC, a highly credible panel
of judges were assembled made up of representatives from different GLAM
institutions and stakeholders from across the cultural and creative
industries.
*1st Prize for Best Overall Project went to District 6 Social App by Team
Artyfact:*
“Artyfact was represented by five team members residing in Senegal,
Cameroon and Ghana. They developed a digital location-based platform that
allows users (District 6’ers) to interact with their environment through an
auditory and visual gamified experience.
They do so by interacting with their immediate environment (maps & shops)
together with the audio files relevant to the marked locations making it
easier to learn about the history.
This is backed through a gamified process through a leader board and
progress tracking. District 6'ers can explore and interact with archives:
this is a refreshing and exciting way to learn about history with friends.”
[image: EMAILER STRAP 06 - FUNDED PROJECTS]
The Goethe-Institut approached 2 of the project teams to fund their
projects for further development. These projects are:
1. Mogau’s Kingdom By Culture Code in partnership with Book Dash
2. Strictly Silk by Hack Circle in partnership with The Nest Collective
- *Book Dash Game - Mogau’s Kingdom:*
Culture Code chose to work with the Book Dash data set to transform one of
their open-source books into a game.
The project aims to bring awareness to Book Dash’s online library of books
by creatively adapting their open access books to make a fun, engaging
edutainment experience that will appeal to a younger audience and assist
Book Dash with their vision to ensure that every child owns a hundred books
by the age of five; before they enter school.
- *Strictly Silk Online:*
Is a safe online space for the queer community to gather in Kenya
especially under the limitations of lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The website was built in collaboration with the Nest Collective, one of the
GLAM partners from Nairobi, Kenya.
The project aims to pivot & replicate all that has been done and learnt by
Nest Collective in the Strictly Silk physical space into a viable virtual
space taking into consideration access, community fostering, safety,
ticketing, shopping from event vendors and assurance in digital security
all with due diligence and care.
