If people are interested, I would like to get together in an online
meeting to discuss what our first project may be. I would especially
like to hear some ideas from some of the people who say they are
interested in WMC but don't want to work on the bylaws. Before the
bylaws can be completed, we need a more specific idea about what we
will first do after being established. I have argued that we should
try to set up an online database and gallery of Canadian historical
and artistic media, but I would like to hear everyone else's ideas, as
well as discuss the logistics of setting up that kind of website.
Would current participants and people who have not yet attended a
meeting be interested in chatting for an hour or so next week on the
topic? If so, let me know and I'll set a time.

The Canadian government has asked for comments on copyright revision at
http://copyright.econsultation.ca/
It will accept comments until September 13. Amazingly this mostly
coincides with the time when most people interested in liberalized
copyright laws are away touring Europe or planting trees. When they
regain access to their electronic lifelines it may be too late to comment.
Promoters of these changes would really like Canada to fall in line with
the WIPO treaty that it signed a decade ago. They might have passed
their changes easily if they had been quick about it, but events over
the last 10 years have made this much more controversial then they would
have hoped.
There do not appear to be any rules that would prohibit comments by
non-Canadians.

If we need to acutally build a wiki, I have lots of experience in that area. I've installed several instances of MediaWiki for a variety of purposes. The actual install is quite simple... so if we can think of a decent purpose, then I'd be happy to contribute the labor to actually build the site.
I'm up for a meeting to discuss a project anytime...

If we are going to have a long discussion about the purpose and
logistics of wikisource.ca, I suggest that we take that discussion to http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Canada/Wikisource_Canada
. This mailing system is great for announcements and questions, but I
think full-fledged conversations would be better on talk pages where
we can more easily track past discussions and link others to the page.

I'm just writing to wish all you Wikimedia Canada advocates a great
day celebrating our country, our cultures, 142 years of our
Confederation together, and many happy returns!
Je suis tout simplement de vous écrire les défenseurs de Wikimédia
Canada pour vous souhaiter une merveilleuse journée de célébrer notre
pays, nos cultures, nos 142 ans de la Confédération ensemble, et de
nombreux autres à venir!

Certainly I am one of those people who view by-law drafting as a tedious (but required) step, and look forward to gettign involved in the actual activities of the chapter. I really hope we can get things formally set up soon, because it will a lot easier to attract people to an exsisting organisation rather than a potential one.
Regards,
