Chinese Wikinews has long met the formal requirements of a new Wikinews
edition to be launched. There has now been another poll:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikinews/Vote/Zh
which currently has 36 votes in favor of launching, including many
Chinese Wikipedians, and only one (!) vote opposed. As per the voting
rules, given more than 90% support after a week of voting, this means
that the project can go ahead.
Are there any objections from the Board to launching the project now? If
I don't hear anything by the end of the week, I presume we can go ahead
and set up the site.

As I already told you, hosting material subject to copyright everywhere in
the world except in the USA is a mistake. The fact some texts by Andr? Gide
are PD-US because written before 1923 won't impress Gide's heirs. Foundation
has certainly better things to do with its money than spending it in lost
cases.

PS: and please please stop telling that the fact the servers are in the USA
is good enough to strictly care only for the US law - with the Yahoo case,
you should know better. Foundation could be sued right here in Paris and
should spend money on explaining how it comes that its site, reachable in
France, offers copyrighted material for free.
I was under the impression that the U.S. had treaties with France and in
some circumstances will honour their laws. Is this the case or not?

Oh, it seems that nobody has informed the foundation that Wikimedia
Deutschland e.V. had its annual meeting, including the re-election of
the board of Wikimedia Deutschland e.V.
The new board consists of the following persons (some of them were
members of previous boards):
Kurt Jansson (Chairman)
Arne Klempert (Deputy Chairman)
André Darmochwal (Treasurer)
Patrick Danowski (Protocol)
There are some additional members of the board:
Philipp Birken
Nina Gerlach
Martin Haase
Mathias Schindler
Frank Schulenburg
Jakob Voß
Delphine said that she was unaware of any official notification to the
foundation regarding this annual meeting (hey, I remember her being at
the meeting - is this an incident of a grave slit of personality?).
Hope it's now fixed.
Mathias,

Not everything needs voting on. You might have noticed there were no
resolutions before this year
(<http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolutions>), instead relying
on consensus of three Board members. There have already been multiple
community votes on the Chinese Wikinews, as you can see on meta and on
the Chinese Wikipedia.
Anyway, the Chinese Wikinews is now available at
http://zh.wikinews.org/ thanks to Brion.
A number of pages are available at
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_language_pre-launch#Chinese.28.E4.B8.AD.…>,
some of which might need to be copied over to the new site.

Michael, I don't believe that Angela ever said that it does require board
approval (I'm not saying whether it does/doesn't, just commenting on her
original email). I think she was just expressing support.
Sorry if I've talked out of turn.

This is a call for volunteers to join the Program Team for Wikimania
2006 <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2006>, the second
international Wikimedia conference, to be held in Boston this August.
The Program Team are responsible for creating the program, inviting
keynote speakers, reviewing proposals for presentations, workshops,
and papers, organizing the speakers when they arrive at the
conference, and related tasks.
A call for papers
<http://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Call_for_papers> was recently
distributed, so we are looking for people willing to help review these
papers as they arrive in Indico <http://cfp.wikimania.wikimedia.org/>.
Please add yourself to
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2006/Program_Team> if you
can help.
I am sending this to all project lists since I'm especially trying to
find 3 more people for the theme of "Wikimedia projects and content".
Angela.
