Always interesting to have accounts of the history from those actually
involved.
On outreach and metrics: there is the "Micawber metric" which is more of a
caricature - "something may well turn up". One has to be careful of that as
something to steer by, clearly.
I won't pre-empt the VSG, in dealing with your two questions.
