Hello everyone,
Just wanted to ask if you have suggestions on locations for Board meetings
over the coming year!
Since we're a national charity we should avoid having meetings in London
all the time. The AGM was in Lincoln, but prior to that the last non-London
Board meeting was last September in Coventry. We should aim to meet at
least twice outside of London in the coming year. If you have any
suggestions, drop me a line. The criteria are:
* we'd like to go somewhere where there is a Wikimedia-related project
going on that we can learn about / help with in some way (e.g. the Coventry
meeting coincided with Wiki Takes Coventry and also with a project at the
Herbert Museum)
* it needs to be readily accessible by public transport,
* we need a good meeting room available for 2 full days and a hotel for
people to stay in

Tumblrs are ridiculously easy to set up. I'm currently running one for
English Wikisource (although I haven't done as much as I would like as I'm
limited on time).
If you want a Commons tumblr, you might need Commons itself to buy into it
first. At least, if you want to refer to it as a Commons tumblr; it would
be the polite thing to do if you intend to act in their name. If it's
UK-related (not necessarily WMUK, just generally local), it would be
simpler.
Scope and morality aside, it is, as mentioned, very easy to get going. I
could have set it up faster than composing this e-mail. (NB: I could get
it started for you if you want but other people would need to maintain it
-- ie. post images). Secondary tumblrblogs have "member" and "admin"
statuses; the first can post, the second can grant member/admin powers and
de-member people again. Admins can't be de-admined, they can only
voluntarily quit; which is why you should probably be sure from the start
about who is running it.

There are several points I would like to make:
* As a movement, there is no unified will with single set of goals but a
diverse range of people with differing priorities. Wikipedia (and the
sister projects) constitutes the manifestation of the aggregation of the
diversity of "what we are trying to achieve".
* As long as there are enough people to maintain WMUK, why do we need to
worry about recruitment? And if there are not enough people, then perhaps
there is no need for WMUK? I find it somewhat disappointing that
discussions on this list have headed in this direction, instead of
focussing on what we think we be good to help develop the family of
Wikimedia sites. I was rather hoping the role of the fundraiser would be
to look at developing projects to achieve such goals, rather than focusing
on WMUK as a self-perpetuating entity.
I am really keen that we have a small membership cost (£5 is good) and
that this simply empowers the member to vote at AGMs etc. Adding other
features is likely to have a financial impact leading some to call for a
rise in the membership fee to cover services which not everyone may feel
are useful or even suitable.

Dear all,
You may have picked up the odd mention in staff reports to the board or
passing conversation, but one of the pieces of work I'm responsible for is
the Charity's gift aid records and claims.
After delay getting our first claim through, then needing to update our
records with HMRC so the right people and bank details were on our record,
I'm ready to work on the outstanding data files for the claims for last
financial year.
However, it's a big job that can't really be automated - it involves
reformatting and then checking through spreadsheets with mixture of search
and replace and common sense to make sure the claim records we're
submitting are those of individuals (not companies) and include real name
data.
Is there someone who would be interested and able to help? It would require
at least a couple of days in the office next month - its not really
appropriate to do remotely and you would have to sigh an undertaking to
treat the data confidentially.
We can support some expenses here (travel, lunch/per diem) but I'm not sure
we could pay for accommodation - its therefore most probably an appeal to
those who are in/near london based to help.
Do let me know if you think this could be something you could do.

Yesterday, the OpenStreetMap Foundation completed a funding drive of £40,000 ($60,000) to buy two new servers.
Because of the success of the fundraising, they have decided to extend the campaign to raise another £32,500 ($50,000).

The collections trust have very kindly offered us a free stand at their
exhibition on the 2nd/3rd of July 2013. This is a great opportunity for us
to talk to attendees at OpenCulture2013 <http://www.openculture2013.org.uk>,
hopefully these will be people who are committed to the idea of free
culture, but they may need someone who can tell them what Wikipedia can do
with mass releases of images. Or indeed just show them how to edit an
article or add an image to an article.
We still have a couple of places for volunteers to man the stand,
preference given to people who can talk about Wikimedia commons or wikidata
as well as Wikipedia.

Dear all,
I am pleased to announce that Wikimedia UK has reached an agreement with
Roger Bamkin and Terence Eden regarding the ownership of QRpedia.
The intellectual property in QRpedia and the qrpedia.org and
qrwp.orgdomains will be transferred to Wikimedia UK, which will
maintain and
support the development of the QRpedia platform for the future. Roger and
Terence will act as honorary advisors to Wikimedia UK in this, as well as
retaining their moral rights of attribution, but will not receive any
financial consideration for this.
I am very pleased we have reached an agreement. I look forward to Wikimedia
UK working to support QRpedia's future development. This includes defining
our future involvement with the MonmouthpediA and GibraltarpediA projects.
