Hello Wikimedians,
We are excited to announce the launch of a new Wikimedia Foundation grants
program, Rapid Grants!
Rapid Grants fund Wikimedia community members -- individuals, groups, or
organizations contributing to Wikimedia projects -- to organize projects
throughout the year for up to USD 2,000. Projects can include experiments
or standard needs that don't need broad review to get started. Applications
are reviewed weekly by WMF staff.
Read more about the new program and apply here:

The draft of the bill has apparently already been taken off the Indian
government website (and is not found on the wayback machine of the Internet
Archive) but there are some news reports on it.
http://www.deccanherald.com/content/544410/geospatial-info-sans-approval-ma…
"No person shall acquire geospatial imagery or data including value
addition of any part of India either through any space or aerial platforms
such as satellite, aircraft, airships, balloons, unmanned aerial vehicles
or terrestrial vehicles, or any other means whatsoever without general or
special permission of the Security Vetting Authority.”

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Affiliate Selected Board Seats - Result
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Wikimedians,
We are writing to let you know the result of the election for the 2
Affiliate Selected Board Seats on the Wikimedia Foundation board.
The successful candidates were *Christophe Henner* and *Nataliia Tymkiv.*
A total of 40 chapters and thorgs voted - all except for the Macedonia and
Macau chapters - which is a record.
The number of first preferences received by each candidate was as follows:
Christophe Henner (9.00);
Siska Doviana (6.75);
Jan Ainali (5.50);
Osmar Valdebenito (5.50);
Nataliia Tymkiv (4.75);
Susanna Mkrtchyan (3.25);
Lodewijk Gelauff (2.50);
Maarten Deneckere (1.50);
Kunal Mehta(1.25);
Leigh Thelmadatter (0.00)
As you know the election was conducted under the Single Transferable Vote,
which meant that votes were redistributed between candidates to come up
with the final result. In the 9th round of voting the final place, after
Christophe was elected, was between Nataliia (16.09) and Siska (9.91). We
will be putting the full count narrative on the Chapters Wiki so that
others can verify it if they wish.
We would like to congratulate Christophe and Nataliia and thank everyone
who stood. It is the closest ASBS result for some time, and all candidates
brought very valuable perspectives to the work of the WMF.
Regards,
Chris Keating, Lorenzo Losa, Lane Rasberry
Election Facilitators

Hello all!
My name is Joe Sutherland and I am writing to you about the New Readers
research project <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_Readers>.
As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation is trying to better understand
internet users around the world. We are particularly interested in how they
find information online, what perceptions they have (if any) of Wikipedia,
and what are the top barriers to preventing them from using Wikimedia
sites. Our goal is to better understand, and then serve potential new
readers of Wikimedia projects. Our priorities for this research are on
Meta-Wiki <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_Readers/Priorities>.
To learn this, we are doing qualitative research sprints in Mexico,
Nigeria, and YES, India.
That’s where you come in. We want our research to reflect needs and
experiences of Wikimedia communities throughout India. Specifically: what
questions do you have about general internet users in India? What groups
(language, professional, regional) would you like to know more about? What
barriers do you believe exist for potential Wikipedia readers?
If you have thoughts or questions, please email me! We will share our
proposed research approach with your inputs incorporated wherever possible
by next week.
Excited to work together,
Joe (User:JSutherland (WMF)

Dear Nataliia ,
Sharing the images under CC zero is very good. I will discuss this with the
team.

Hi all,
Thanks Satdeep for the nomination. I am really honored.
But I am very sorry that I cannot accept the nomination, as I am being
provided infrastructure support from WMIN, which is essential for me to
continue my volunteer on-wiki activities as a community member, and it will
be a conflict of interest from my part to continue to get the support as
well as become a Advisory committee member.
I am also happy to nominate the name of Satdeep Gill, as he is one of the
most active community members in India (both on-wiki and off-wiki) and also
the founder member of Punjabi Wikimedia User Group, the first user group
from India. He was also mentioned as Wikimedian of the Year in Wikimania
Mexico in 2015 by Jimbo Wales. In my opinion, his addition to the committee
will improve the communication gap between the community and the chapter.
Best wishes,
