Today we have released first version of FAQ
for Hindi Wikipedia

a nice effort of malayalam wiki community they translated their FAQ from
malayalam to english.That translation helped us a lot for preparing FAQ for
Hindi Wikipedia.Special thanks to Shiju Alex and Junad pv who gave this FAQ
its Final pdf form.

As many of you know the default skin of wikipedias (including that of all
Indic language wikipedias) is moved to the new Vector skin some time back.
Please see the below mail that I sent to this list regrading this on *2010
July 1*.
As some of you know, along with this update, the logo of wikipedia is also
updated. The current logo is available

But even though almost 6 months had passed after this major update, only

has took initiative to create the new logo for some of the Indian language
wikis. But for languages like Kannada, Oriya, and so on even that is
pending. Even if the new logo is created a bug needs to be filed by the
respective wiki community to change the logo. So for most of the Indian
wikis both these tasks are pending now.
I request the respective language communities to take initiatives to create
the new logo and file a bug for this update. The guidelines for creating the
new logo is listed at

As some of you already know, *Usability Team<http://usability.wikimedia.org>
* is driving the task of updating the default skin of all WikiMedia
Foundation wikis to a skin called
*Vector*<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Vector>.
English Wikipedia and some other big wikis have already moved to *Vector
skin* some time back. Apart from the UI, the logo of Wikipedia is also
updated <http://blog.wikimedia.org/2010/wikipedia-in-3d/>.
Yesterday (2010 June 30) at 10:30 PM IST, some other wikis (that have
carried out the formalities required for the UI change) are also moved to
the new UI. Among this, 3 Indian Language Wikipedias are also there.
Following are those Indian Language wikipedias:
- Malayalam - http://ml.wikipedia.org
- Bengali - http://bn.wikipedia.org
- Telugu - http://te.wikipedia.org
Please note the new default skin and the new logo that are appearing on
these wikis. (You may need to clear the cache to see the changes. )
Now to move your language wiki to Vector, you have to perform the following
two major operations:
1. Update the logo of your wiki
2. Localize the Vector skin system messages
Logo update
For some languages, logo is already updated. See the list here:

If your wiki's logo is missing from this list, then you need to create the
new logo based on the instructions listed on this page.

Localizing the Vector skin System messages
For the current update, you need to localize the Vector skin system
messages. To localize the system messages, use Translate wiki -
http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Main_Page
The current Localization statistics of Vector skin system messages is
available here. http://translatewiki.net/wiki/User:GerardM/usability-stats
You can see that many Indian languages (for example, Tamil) are missing from
this list. The reason is, none of the Vector skin system messages are
localized for those languages. Even for the big Languages like Hindi and
Marathi the percentage of localized messages is very low.
So I request the respective Indian Language Wikipedia communities to take
required initiative to switch over to the new Skin. Usability team is
planning for next set of switch over by the end of July. So you have
almost one month to finish these tasks.
Once you finish the above tasks you need to:
- Let the community know about this upcoming update (Use the village
pump, Site Notice, Mailing list, and so on)
- Appoint some volunteers to answer the questions related to this
- Appoint an ambassador to collect the feedback/issues/bugs and report it
to the Usability Team.

Yesterday, at the 32nd Bangalore Meetup, Shubhashish, Ralph, Aniruddh and I
had a talk, and I decided to send this mail across.
Not all people know about geocoding images, or adding multilingual
descriptions. I thought I would give a brief introduction to these two
concepts.
Please NOTE : All examples used below are images uploaded by me.
*1> Multilingual Descriptions:*
While uploading a file, it is best recommended, to add a brief description.
By default, the language setting is English. However you cann add as many as
you want, and in the order of your preference. I use Hindi first, and then
English. EG:

I suggest adding descriptions in your local language and/or mother tongue
apart from English. It is irrelevant whether the language in which you type
has any connection the the picture. I have uploaded pictures of Tamil Nadu
with Hindi descriptions.
You can type in Indian languages using http://www.Quillpad.in or
http://www.google.com/transliterate/
Alternatively, you can use
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Keymanweb/Keymanweb on Wikipedia itself.
*2> Geocoding images*
Geocoding is a relatively easy process.
You can use http://tools.freeside.sk/geolocator/geolocator.html to generate
geolocation tags.
The process is simple, open Google Maps/Wikimapia/Open Street Maps, locate
the place in question, and copy the link, in Wikimapia, from the address
bar, Google maps, click on link, copy the first link, in OSM, click on
permalink, copy from address bar and paste it in the box on the link given
above.
Click on Apply, it'll show the location in the map. Zoom in and give final
adjustments, if any to the location and copy the tags below. I suggest
{{location}} over {{coord}} as the latter is being depreciated. Among the
two {{location}} tags, I use the longer one.
Add the location tags to the additional info box while uploading.
Note:
i] For some images, getting a location is easy. Eg: In
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RCC-Magic-Box-Hosur-Road.jpg it was
easy as the picture's location is an important junction on a major road.
Locating it on the maps was an easy task.
ii] For some pictures, it wasn't so easy, like
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NH-209-Dimbam_Ghat.jpg I didn't know
where to place the exact marker, so I chose a hairpin bend from the map that
seemed most likely or close to the one I photographed. [ *For those who have
GPS enabled devices with you: Try saving the location, or like I discovered
later on, tweet out the something with locations enabled and favourite that
tweet for easy access later on.* ]
I bookmarked, the Commons Upload Form, GeoLocator, and the Indic Text tool
on my browser bookmarks toolbar so it can be opened as and when I take a
photograph.
If anybody has any problems or issues with the above matter, please let me
know. I'll be happy to help you out in any event you haven't understood what
I mentioned.

Hi All (cross-posting to make sure I reach as much of India as possible),
As you're aware, we had invited applications for Campus Ambassadors for the upcoming Pune Pilot of the India Campus Program.
The response has been fantastic: we've received ~500 applications/enquiries from across India, ~70 of which were from Pune. This has been really heartening - indicating the desire of many to support the Wikimedia movement. It's also been overwhelming because we need to process all the applications, respond to applicants, etc.!
I think, most critically, it also presents an amazing opportunity for us to introduce new people to Wikimedia projects (especially Wikipedia) - and invite them to join the community. I've interviewed quite a few and there is a recurring theme I hear from many of them. It goes something like, "I've been using Wikipedia for years and years, and I love it. I want to contribute back to it - but I wasn't sure how. Then I saw the banner and decided this was a great way to help." The overwhelming common trait I have noticed in the applicants is that they are bright, well-intentioned and eager to contribute.
Here are some thoughts I had, and I'd love to hear your suggestions/comments on these.
We should respond to every single applicant, and even to those who didn't actually apply but sent emails enquiries (such as "When is the program coming to my city?", etc.) No one should be left behind.
We will prioritise (in terms of sequence of events) the Pune Campus Ambassadors. We need to have a reasonable number available for a training session that we need to conduct before the start of the program. Of the 70 who applied from Pune, we should hopefully get 20-30 Campus Ambassadors.
The important suggestion I had for everyone else (in Pune and beyond) is that we do not "reject" anyone. While some might not become Campus Ambassadors because we don't plan to run the program in their towns/cities right now, or some in Pune might not currently have the desired experience (in teaching and people management), there is no reason that they can't participate in some other roles. Therefore, I don't think we should send any "reject letters" to anyone. No one should be left behind. Instead, we should send them options on how they can participate/learn more about participating. For example:-
i) they could form student clubs in their respective educational establishments
ii) they could form Wikipedia clubs in their workplaces/social groups (as a number of applicants are working professionals, and no longer on campus)
iii) they could become individual editors
For us to try and help realise their potential, here are some thoughts I had:-
i) Invite all the applicants/enquirers to attend the next community meet-ups. This was a suggestion shared by the Pune community. This would give them a chance to interact with the community and understand more about the movement/projects.
ii) Additionally, those who have not been selected as Campus Ambassadors can be reassured by telling them that they can join an "incubation" program. This was a suggestion shared by the Pune community. This would involve them attending meet-ups, learning how to edit, starting to edit - and being supported and hand-held along the way by existing community members. This would help them if they eventually wish to reapply as Campus Ambassadors. Even if they choose not to, they could easily become individual newbie editors.
iii) Invite all applicants/enquirers in a town/city to attend a full-fledged Wiki Academy. This was a suggestion shared by the Mumbai community. This is currently envisaged as a full day session where they are given insights into the movement & projects, taught how to edit, and actually edit articles.
iv) In towns/cities where a full-fledged Wiki Academy is not viable (e.g. if there aren't enough numbers of either participants or volunteers/volunteer time to run a Wiki Academy), then an alternative suggestion is to have a smaller group (3-5) of the applicants /enquirers linked up with a community member who can conduct smaller, shorter groups to explain how to edit and hand-hold them as they edit.
I'd really like to hear your views/comments/suggestions on the ideas listed here.
Also, do let me know which of you would like to volunteer either to help conduct Wiki Academies (point (iii) above) or to manage smaller groups of potential newbies (point (iv) above). Also, it'd be great if we could invite them to your next meet-ups at your respective towns/cities (point (i) above).
Another aspect I'd like to get suggestions from you on is how to manage the process of inviting them to these events. We could, for example, share the contacts of these applicants with the respective communities could reach out and invite them. Alternatively, if you wish this to be done for you, that also can be arranged (though it will put some strain on already stretched resources.)
I look forward to hearing from you. (Please note that we have received applicants from every corner of the country - so please don't assume that the applicants are only from Pune or only from large cities or only interested in English Wikipedia. (They are literally from everywhere, and no one should be left behind!)

Tamil Wikipedia added another 1,000+ articles in the last 3 weeks.
Behind this is a remarkable story of 1 user who created 300 articles
organically in 20 hours.
P.M.Puniyameen ( http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/user:P.M.Puniyameen ) from
Srilanka is a retired academician, prolific writer and independent
journalist. He started contributing to Tamil Wikipedia from November 2010.
In the short span of 5 months he has added 2000+ articles.
He set himself a target creating 200 articles on 20th April but ended up
creating 300 articles in 20 hours. He was helped by his wife, daughter and
two colleagues in typing the articles which were mainly info based articles
on cricketers, small magazines. Earlier, he even created articles from his
bed when he was in a medical rest.
Thought of sharing this story as it is inspiring to see people working with
so much dedication, mobilising people and resources for Wikipedia.

I've been working for a few hours on a Chrome extension to add links
to Indic Language Wiki pages when searching in Google. It hooks into
Google's search results, and if it finds an enwiki article (to which a
tawiki interwiki link also exists), it'll display it side by side.

4. Needs a better logo (Help in this department would be highly appreciated :) )
I think this is one step forward in fixing the search issue -
discovering content in Indic Language wikis is now easier.

grant requests and to benefit from a wider movement perspective.
