Dear All,
We have had the Wikipedia Day celebrations today evening at the Computer
Society of India in Kolkata. It was a modest gathering of eleven people. I
guess some of us could not attend solely because it was a weekday. But then
we had a mixed crowd of old and new faces that lent the event a touch of
liveliness.
We celebrated by cutting the cake and shared the developments in the
community. Biswarup da had recently uploaded his 10,000th picture in the
Commons, and we had a big round of applause for him. We had one new face
Ankita, who shared her contributions in the Wikibooks. Shubhashish joined
the celebrations from Delhi, first on phone and finally on Google hangout.
We also had a bit of planning on our follow up activities. We would be
happy to share them with you some time very soon.
Thanks to all who made this event successful in spite of all odds.
Thanks and regards,
Kalyan Sarkar

Dear Friends,
We are happy to announce two events this month at educational institutions.
AA IIT Kharagpur will be celebrating their SpringFest 2013 from 23rd
Jan to 26th Jan. We will partner with them in this event as Knowledge
Partners. We will be conducting a Wiki Academy, and a Photographic contest.
Expect some newbies from the eastern region. The Photographic contest is
based on images reflecting the culture of the region being uploaded to
Wikimedia commons. The following members will support the IIT Kgp Spring
Fest related activities.
1. Jayanta Nath - Bengali Wikipedia Administrator, Bengali SIG Chair, &
FOSS activist
2. Kalyan Sarkar - Kolkata SIG Chair
3. Sucheta Ghosal - OPWomen Intern at Wikimedia
4. Biswarup Ganguly - Wikimedia Commons contributor
5. Rangan Dutta - Wikimedia Commons contributor, Photographer and Columnist
6. Karthik Nadar - Secretary, WMIN
BB University College of Engineering, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari district
is organizing a event called Kanya Wizard'13 on the same day, 23rd Jan
2013. Their objective is to promote the addition and improvement of content
in the web about their district. Wiki Kanya is one of the three events they
have proposed. This envisages creating awareness about Wikimedia projects
to 350 students drawn from 70 colleges in the district, and providing hands
on training to about 50 students in editing. The District Collector and the
Dean of the University are very enthusiastic about this project. We hope to
stretch the scope of this to go beyond just one session of a wiki academy
to a few follow up sessions in the coming months to hand hold the members
to more effectively complete their task. Viswanathan Prabhakaran, Theni M
Subramani and two more Wikipedians will be handling this event.
Cheers,
Sowmyan
Hi,
I was browsing through
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipediasand found the number
of admin users across Indic Wikipedias very low.
Hindi has only 4, followed by Bengali and Marathi with 10 and Telugu and
Malayalam with 18.
If you discount the inactive admin users, the count can be very low to
maintain the quality.
In Tamil Wikipedia, we make sure to run admin elections regularly. We
choose around 4 admins every year and don't hesitate to nominate promising
newcomers. This helps to share work load, give a break for wikiholics and
provide a sense of belonging for the whole community. In the beginning
days, most of the founding members got admin access within few weeks of
meaningful contribution and this good will has never failed.
Unless there are other compelling reasons for this low count of admin
users, I urge every community to nominate / self-nominate good contributors
and make them admins.
Ravi

All,
We are planning to hold the W12 Kolkata on 15 Jan 2013 (Tuesday) from 6 PM
at CSI Kolkata. Please let us know of your availability and concerns if any.
Initially we had planned to hold the event on 13 Jan 2013 (Saturday),
because it would have been convenient for many of us to attend the event on
weekend. However, we had some issues with the venue, so after discussion
between Jayanta da and myself, we thought it would be better to hold the
event on the day itself.
Thanks and regards,
Kalyan Sarkar
