Wiki meet for Delhi tomorrow
If you think Wikipedia doesn’t have the real good stuff on Delhi or
just doesn’t get the city right, tomorrow is your chance to change
that. The open source knowledge website is holding a meet-up in Hauz
Khas on Sunday, and everyone is welcome to pump up the information on
the Capital in there. And not just the boring stuff. The
representatives say they’re looking for bright, young people to join
them in adding up more on the city’s cultural hubs, new landmarks,
hangouts and historical hotspots.
“People still have the wrong notion that Wikipedia has a set of
permanent editors who put all the information there. Everything in
there is written by users, and the more people we have from Delhi, the
better a knowledge bank we’ll have on the city. Abroad, they have a
page on each street and every good place,” says Abhishek Suryawanshi,
Wiki ambassador. So, existing editors — ordinary users, that is, will
guide the new editors who wish to debut at the meet. The informal
session, which will be held at Wikipedia’s Delhi office — the only one
in the world outside of the United States — will also see an open
debate and discussion on what needs to be done to make Delhi look up
on the website. “For example, we recently had a meet in Ahmedabad and
discovered that there are not too many pictures of the city on the
site. Within a week of the session, we had over a thousand photos up
there!” says Suryawanshi.
For all the questions on the credibility of the information on the
encyclopedia, Suryawanshi has one answer. “Wikipedia is just a
collection of quality references. We go ahead and put a fact in there
irrespective of the contributor, as long as there’s a citable,
reliable reference to go back to. Students and other users often say
they’ve checked this or that on Wiki, but Wikipedia should not be
quoted that way. It’s a start point to any research, not the end
point,” he says.

Growing and sharing together: Kannada Wikipedia turns 9 years old

*), the Kannada version of the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia is all
set to complete 9 years on 12th June. A meet up of Wikipedians will be held
to celebrate this landmark day.
Wikipedia is the free online encyclopedia with almost 40 lakh articles on
different subjects – and is read by 48.9 crore people, which makes it the 5
th most visited website in the world. It also exists in 20 major Indian
languages including Kannada. Kannada Wikipedia has over 12,000 articles and
has 11.5 lakh page views per month. A lesser known fact about Wikipedia is
that all the content is contributed by volunteers. Currently, 27 volunteers
from all over the world contribute to the content on Kannada Wikipedia.
In this community members collaborate with each other to add and enhance
content on a wide variety of topics. Depending on their interests, they
edit articles on Kannada cuisine, culture, traditions, music and much more.
Some write about physics, biology, chemistry, medicine and other subjects
so that fellow Kannadigas don't have to learn English to know more about
any subject in the world!
However, the journey has only just begun. Omshivaprakash HL, an active
member of the project explains, “In order to cover the incredibly diverse
and rich culture in Karnataka from *Dharwad peda* to Bandipur forests to
Coorg coffee estates, we welcome as many fellow lovers of Kannada to our
project. All you need to know is how to read and write Kannada – and follow
some basic principles such as writing about notable subjects, writing from
a neutral point of view and adding references for any facts that you
include. You can start by clicking the 'edit' (ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿ) button you see on
any article and start adding useful information on that topic. You can
reference content from newspapers, journals or books.”
To celebrate their 9th anniversary, the Kannada Wikipedia Community has
planned a get together at Center for Internet & Society, Bangalore on
17thJune 2012 at 10 AM. They will explore ways in which Kannada
Wikipedia can
be improved and also plan to teach new folks on how they can add content.
All those passionate about sharing knowledge and who want to celebrate
Kannadiga heritage are invited to join in - students, professionals,
housewives, etc. As Tejas Jain, another Wikipedian from Bangalore puts it,
“There is nothing more satisfying than sharing knowledge for free, that too
in your mother tongue. So many of the nearly 5 crore Kannada speakers can
gain from these efforts! ”
Hisham Mundol, who heads the Wikimedia Foundation’s India Program (which is
the initiaitive to support Wikipedia in India) adds, “Wikipedia’s dream is
to make all knowledge available to everyone for free. We invite Kannadigas
to join the small but wonderful community of Kannada Wikipedians so that
this is realised to benefit crores of people whose mother tongue is
Kannada.”
To know more about the 9th anniversary celebrations and to attend, you can

Hey folks,
Hisham <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Hisham> had posted an update
on the community
building<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Program/Pilot_Designs/Basic_Community_…>pilot
Shiju <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Shiju> ran as part of India
Program. This pilot was run in Assam but there are tips and pointers and
suggestions from this pilot that are relevant for all Indic communities. As
part of the India Programs IRCs, we propose the first monthly IRC of June
to be on this topic. We'd like to discuss how to build and support
communities by increasing the number of editors, assessing progress on
Wikiprojects as well as fostering possibilities of new collaborations.

The year 2013 would be observed as the centenary year of Indian Cinema.
Members of INCINE are expecting some celebrations or events to happen on

Hello all,
Most of know the "Download as PDF" feature is not usable on Indic wikis
with Collection Extension due to issues in PDF generation with complex
scripts. While we hope this gets fixed, in the meantime, we can provide
something that's more usable to users. Aamaachu, a Tamil Wikipedia reader
and free software contributor suggested[1] instead of showing "Download as
PDF" (which downloads an unusable PDF), the link could be "Download as ODT"
and people who want to take content offline could atleast read them
properly. (MS Office 2007 supports opening ODT files as well). I had filed
a bug[2] for the same and all Tamil Wiki projects now show "Download as
ODT" on the portlet. Please consider filing similar bugs for your Indic
Wiki project making the experience more "usable". Of Course once complex
script rendering in PDF is supported, we can always change / add one more
option to list PDF.
Thank you.

Dear colleagues,
A few months ago, I wrote to this list (and to translators-l) asking for
help in translating the information page about the Wikimedia Grants program
into Indic languages. This is important in order to make this information
about an important tool and opportunity for community-level initiative
available to those who would have a hard time digesting that information in
English.
While there has been a good response in translating into other
languages[1], very little progress was made on the Indic languages:
So far, only one Tamil speaker volunteered some time (thank you,
User:Shanmugamp7!), but much more help is needed (including in Tamil, which
is 10% translated).
I ask that you consider taking some time to help with this, or to reach out
to your personal contacts whom you know to be interested in helping in this
way, to help us make the program more accessible throughout India.
The page is here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Index and you can
use the "Translate this page" link at the top to begin translating.
Many thanks in advance,
Asaf
[1] as of this writing, Arabic, Catalan, Spanish, French, Hebrew, Japanese,
Macedonian, Dutch, and Swahili are 100% translated.
