Hi all,
Wikipedia Day XII is coming up on January 15, 2013.
Does anybody have any plans for any special meetup, academy, or any special
event on that day?
The Chapter has decided to provide support in whatever way that it can to
any celebration of sorts.
I hope we can have cakes being cut across the country like we had last year.
Please spread this mail and post a Grant Request if needed on
http://wiki.wikimedia.in
On behalf of the Chapter EC.

Hi,
Thanks, Nitika.
It might also be a good idea to ask participants to get their dongles as backup.
Also, please keep us informed on the GLAM discussions, as this may be of interest to some of us on this list, like me. :)

*WLM beat its own record this year with more than 3,50,000 images
Two photographs sent by Indians have won the first and sixth places in what
Guinness World Records has called the largest photo competition. Called
‘Wiki Loves Monuments 2012!’ (WLM), the online competition was organised by
Wikipedians all over the world, Karthik Nadar, secretary and Board member,
Executive Committee, Wikimedia India Chapter, told The Hindu .
Pranav Singh’s photo of Safdarjung’s tomb in New Delhi secured the first
place internationally while Narender Kumar’s photo of the Taj Mahal got the
sixth place. The two photos had been rated ninth and first respectively in
the competition held at the India level. Other Indian finalists sent photos
of the country’s tombs, temples and military forts. Narender Kumar told The
Hindu that most photos of the Taj are “touristy,” so he took an unusual
angle. “Luckily, there was foggy weather,” he said.
A record
While WLM had set the Guinness record for the world’s largest photo contest
with 1,68,208 images in 2011, it beat its own record this year with more
than 3,50,000 images.
India participated for the first time in the competition this year. It sent
the highest number of participants, representing 15 per cent of the 15,000
total contributors from around the world. Over 2,200 photographers
contributed nearly 16,000 photos, according to sources in Wikimedia India
Chapter.
There is no free-to-use image of more than 99 per cent of monuments in
India listed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The aim of the
contest was to encourage people to contribute photos to Wikimedia Commons,
said Mr. Nadar. The Wikimedia Commons is a sister project of Wikipedia. It
is a media file repository that makes available freely licensed educational
content (such as images, sound and video clips) to everyone in the world.
It acts as a common repository for various projects of the Wikimedia
Foundation, including Wikipedia. (Wikipedia.org )
He said anyone could use the photos from the Commons, including for
commercial purposes provided the photographer’s name was mentioned. A
‘Photo Walk’ was organised in Mumbai in September (when the contest was on)
during which participants took photos for the contest.
Naveen Francis, former secretary and board member, Wikimedia India chapter,
told The Hindu that participation from India was “almost uniform” with
photos coming from contestants from across the country. The highest
participation was from Delhi, with more photos taken of the Taj Mahal and
the Qutub Minar. Mumbai followed with photos of Gateway of India.
Mr. Francis said contestants were asked to photograph those monuments
recognised by the ASI. The focus was on structures of national and
international importance. However, some contestants sent photos of
monuments not recognised by the ASI. Those were excluded from the
competition. However, they will be used in Wiki Voyage, a new travel
website that has launched recently.
The international jury considered 324 images from 33 participating
countries in the finale. There were 10 nominations from each participating
country for the international round. The Indian jury for the country round
had six jury members, who nominated 10 photos from 16,000. Three
professional photographers, Gauri Gill, Anup Mathew Thomas and Ryan Lobo,
made up the team along with three Wikipedians Arun Ganesh, Kiran Ravikumar,
and Sreejith K. *

*Wikidata: Summing the sum of human knowledge*
*By Rohini Lakshané*
Have you ever wished you could query Wikipedia with a question? Have you
ever wanted to run a search on Wikipedia to extract data rather than trawl
through reams of Wikipedia pages and interlinks? Have you ever imagined a
world where everyone could freely pool knowledge even without sharing a
common language? Wikidata is set to do all this, and more.
Wikidata, deployed in October this year, is the newest project by the
Wikimedia Foundation, the organisation that runs Wikipedia and its sister
projects. It is a semantic, multilingual, structured database that anyone
can read and edit. It is machine readable, which makes searching, sorting
and handling of data efficient and fast. Like with its siblings, Wikidata’s
content and software are published under a free license.
*Central repository of links*
Wikidata aims to streamline Wikipedia’s rich but chaotic linking structure.
Every Wikipedia page has ‘interwiki links’ that link it to other Wikipedia
pages. ‘Interlanguage links’ connect pages to other pages on the same topic
published on Wikipedias in different languages, creating a mesh of links.
With around 23 million articles in 285 languages, the linking structure
leads to immense duplication. Wikidata will act as a central repository for
all language links on all Wikipedias, with the ultimate objective of
levelling off the raw data in the language versions. Under the *first
phase<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Development/Sprint_archive>
* of Wikidata deployment, which is now
live<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Development/Sprint_archive>,
editors can add interlanguage links (sitelinks) on Wikidata pages.
*Ask Wikipedia a question*
The *future phases<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Technical_proposal>
* of Wikidata deployment involve converging the data found
in*Infoboxes<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Infobox>
* (December 2012 or January 2013), and the enabling of the creation of
lists on Wikipedia (April or March 2013).
Infoboxes -- tables with the summary of the most important information on
the pages -- across Wikipedias are not uniform. Internationalised export
and import of data present in Wikipedia templates such as the Infobox would
greatly enrich its encyclopaedic value. All information present in all
Infoboxes will then come to one central repository from where it could be
updated everywhere else at the same time.
Wikipedia houses lists on assorted topics created by users -- episodes of
the most popular TV shows, heads of state, and even inventors killed by
their own inventions. However, it is currently not possible to query these
lists and cull out specific information. For example, searching the string
“countries with highest GDP” leads to a search results page with the
entries ‘List of countries with the highest GDP per capita’ and ‘Historical
list of ten largest countries by GDP’. But if you were to search for ‘ten
countries with highest GDP in Asia’ you wouldn’t quickly reach the relevant
information even though it exists in these lists. Wikidata will
automatically create a user-queried list to answer semantic queries such
as, “What were the ten countries with highest GDP in Asia last year?”
Konarak Ratnakar, who has registered over 8,000 edits on Wikidata, says, *“I
found that Wikidata had very few India-related entries. So I started adding
information on Indian cities and the capitals of small countries. I like
Infoboxes very much, and that fact that this project would make Infoboxes
grow motivated me to contribute.” *
*Supporting smaller Wikipedias*
Of the 285 Wikipedias, only four have more than a million articles. 40
Wikipedias have over a 100,000 articles. Big Wikipedias have legions of
editors; most Wikipedias with a smaller article base have fewer speakers of
the language or less volunteer manpower. Wikidata aspires to enable smaller
Wikipedias to extend their tendrils to bigger ones, and benefit from the
vast amounts of language-independent data present on them. Having
up-to-date data at their disposal will potentially rope in and retain
editors and contributors on smaller Wikipedias, where researching and
writing voluminous content from scratch may be a laborious task. The web
and Wikipedia would get more content, which in turn, would become useful to
those who only speak the languages in which smaller Wikipedias exist.
*Verifiability and difference of opinion*
Wikidata can handle differences of opinion. If different sources of data
portray discrepant or conflicting information, Wikidata has the provision
to include such differences, and the different nuances of information. This
data will be accompanied by its source in keeping with one of Wikipedia’s
cornerstones of verifiability. Lydia Pintscher of Wikimedia Deuthschland,
who handles community communications for Wikidata, explains, *“Say you have
the number of inhabitants of Israel. People don't agree on an exact number
for that for various reasons. In Wikidata it will be possible to add all of
them (within reason) with sources. So it'll not be about what is right but
about what some source says.”*
*Pushing the envelope at Wikipedias and the web*
Wikidata is slated to expand. Once it is fully deployed, it will apparently
allow for more new articles to be created with fewer contributions. Editors
will not need to write full articles on topics that already exist on other
Wikipedias. Instead, they will need to enter data at the specified data
points to get an article with the preliminary framework ready. Wikidata
will also enable micro-contributions to articles that already exist by
allowing easy data entry for editors to expand or update articles using the
available datasets.
Machine-readable data facilitates automatic updating of content that is
currently done manually on Wikipedia, for example, the updating of census
figures or election results. Wikipedia lists too will be automatically
created and updated.
Editing on Wikidata is done through a form-based editor, instead of using
wiki syntax, the mark-up present on Wikipedia, which new editors generally
find tedious.
Once Wikidata is fully operational, it will act as an interchange point for
more Wiki projects, such as the Wikimedia Commons, a media repository.
Wikidata is governed by the Creative Commons Public Domain license, which
renders the data on it copyright-free. As the Wikidata API is freely
available and the software is open licensed, you could run your own
instance. The availability of interwiki data and API opens up many
possibilities -- data extraction, data mash-ups, using interwiki metadata
for regional or localised Wikipedias, and expanding the scope of apps such
as the *Interwiki Redirect Service <http://interwikiredir.appspot.com/>*.
Pintscher says, *“In the near future we'll see the roll-out of phase 2 of
Wikidata and then the adaption of that on the Wikipedias. With time I hope
that more and more players outside Wikimedia will make use of Wikidata and
build great things on top of it. I'm sure they'll come up with many things
we haven't even thought of yet.”*
Wikidata has the potential to be a repository of repositories where the sum
total of human knowledge coalesces, a database that glues together
Wikipedias of all 285 (and counting) languages.

Hi Abhishek,
Thank you for responding. Since this is a new concept for us, I hope you will bear with us a little.
1. If the idea of the Summit is that it is to be held in Pune only, why not just call it Wikipedia Summit Pune? This gives other cities in India also a chance to consider such an event themselves.
2. Since this summit is to be held in Pune year-on-year, I would suggest writing to the Pune list and also inviting the Pune SIG in the Committee.
3. There has not been a WikiConference in 2012. I remember the Chapter had put out a call for bids but got none. I am happy that they did not feel compelled to push for a WikiConference. These things work much better when the community members want it. Till then, I suppose state level conferences like the one organised by the Malayalam Wikipedia community and this Summit by Pune would breed a group of people with skills acquired for organising a nation wide WikiConference.
Warm regards,
Pradeep Mohandas

Hi Ravi,
Thank you so much appreciating efforts.
I just want to clarify few things :
*1) Summit - Conference : It is different - *
Summit skeleton is completely different as compared to conference.
Conference : One speaker and remaining audience. It is most of time - one
way communication. (except Q & A)
Summit : It is more interactive and two way communication, everyone gets
platform to share. (More like Panel discussion)
More details will be shared soon.
*2) Value dilation : *
Repeating same, Conference comes up with different model and skeleton. So
it is going to 'add value' to existing outreach.
Additionally , our aim is to host Summit every year at same place for
continuity.
*3) Just event? *
We are going to introduce projects to follow for one year. So Summit is
just kick start ti those ambitious projects.
Reports of projects will be published in next year's Summit, and new
projects will selected as per requirement.
*4) Chapter involvement : *
Chapter is official body in India, and it will be there in future too. We
have full respect for Chapter - as they were pioneer to introduce
WikiConference India, as well as many projects. It is difficult to imagine
Wiki outreach in India without Chapter.
We believe, Chapter is there is to support community initiatives, and
Summit is also community initiative.
We have '*requested*' Chapter to nominate three Chapter representatives in
planning committee, we are hopeful about their response.
*5) Community involvement : *
Summit itself is being planned *by small community*, we do understand there
is exists a *bigger and wider community* with lot of credibility and
experience.
We would also like to request community members to be part of Planning
Committee to execute whole activity.
Do let us know if anyone want to volunteer.
*
6) Why Summit, What is Spoken Wikipedia and Why Pune? *:
P.S : City, Summit and Spoken
Wikipedia<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Summit_India/About_Us>
*
7) There are many flaws and mistakes : *
Instead of having bullet-proof shell, Summit idea is to have discussion to
develop Wikipedia in more dynamic and innovative way (like Spoken
Wikipedia).
If we 've hurt anyone in whole process, we would like to apologize
publicly. At same, we expect support by assuming good faith. For Summit
2014 planning, definitely we will improve and learn from our mistakes.
*P.S :* Everyone working for Summit is volunteer, *No one is getting
fellowship or grants to run Summit.* We are working professionals, who are *
donating* their time and energy to make Summit happen. It is by the
community, for the wider community event.
We believe Spoken Wikipedia through Summit is going to bring hope of light
in disabled persons life.
Keep Suggesting, Keep Inspiring! :)

Hi,
An important assignment kept me away from the first Bharuch meetup. Another Wikipedian from Bharuch Satishbhai took over and attended the meetup at the K J Choksi public library. Since no one else turned up, Satishbhai spoke with the librarian telling him about Wikipedia qnd showing him the Gujarati Wikipedia and showing him how to edit the same.
Warm regards,
Pradeep
