Hi,
A mail sent by Wikimedia said that I'll be contacted shortly regarding my
talk, but haven't been contacted yet. (
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiConference_India_2011/Submissions_Review -
No. 179)
Hence, I am starting a thread for the same.
*1. *The idea behind my proposal was to put as much *AJAX *in a Wiki Page as
possible, which will make Wiki more Professional & Enticing for users.
For instance, if you take a look at the pages -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_sovereign_debt_crisishttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010%E2%80%932011_Greek_protests or,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_natural_disasters_by_death_toll
A user (an Engineer like me) might not be interested in going through each &
every topic. Since the whole page (1.54 MB for the Euro Debt Crisis Page)
would be loaded every time, we can implement a method which would only show
the topic which would be selected from the Table of Contents. Thus, one
doesnt have to scroll through long paragraphs each time he has to look for
different topics within a page. Hence, instead of the whole page, a section
of the page is transferred at a time.
*Advantages-*
The whole Web page would be compact.
One wont have to scroll through large paragraphs.
*Waiting Time *is reduced.
*Bandwidth Usage- *Since pages do not have to completely reload, it can help
in less server bandwidth (helpful for me in my college), and when you are in
countries or places that charge for your hosting bandwith, it will be more
efficient,
*Traffic *to and from the server is *reduced*.
Form Validation.
User Simplicity.
Speed.
*Disadvantages-*
If you press the back button, you may not be able to return in the previous
state.
Might be *difficult to* *bookmark *and return to that particular state of
the application
*2. *The second idea was to put *JQuery *into use.
For instance, Stave Jobs died on 5th Oct, a couple of days bak.
We could have had an implementation of a simple slideshow of pictures
showing his Life (from Apple NeXT, Pixar, Disney to Apple), his inventions
(from Apple I to Macbook Air + IPad & IPhone) on the main Wiki Page.
Example for implementation-
http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/archive/Bill-Shankly-previously-unseen-pict…
*Advantages *are that it has a Large library & an efficient & helpful Open
Source Community and has *AJAX Support.*
Obviously for that JQuery Javascript file would be required to run the
JQuery commands.
*
*
*Till here was about my Proposal.*
I have a few more queries though.
1. Could someone tell me about Hackathon & what role can I play, depending
on my proposal?
2. How do I present my talk (if I am allowed)..like present a modified page
with AJAX usage as well?
3. Could I have a contact no. of someone incharge so that I can speak
directly, in case for some minor queries.
Thanks in advance.
With Regards,

Subject: [WikimediaMobile] Help us develop the Wikipedia Android app
To: Wikimedia developers <wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, mobile-l <
mobile-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Greetings All,
Over the last couple of weeks a group of devs from Nitobi have been
putting together an Android Wikipedia App for us. They've been using
the PhoneGap framework to build the app and now it mostly has the same
features as our iOS app. I think it's finally gotten to a good state
for people to start hacking on it.
For those just wanting to get started here are the links
code: https://github.com/nitobi/Wikipedia
bugs: http://bit.ly/q1B9Bj
feature ideas:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Projects/App_Features_&_Roadmap#Featu…
Right now the code is sitting in github but the plan is to move it
into our own git repo, alongside MediaWiki.
How can you help?
* Fork the code and help us with open bug requests
* Critique the code and suggest cleanup
* Port the app to iOS, Symbian, BlackBerry, Windows, WebOS, & Bada —
first get it running, then customize to each platform's look and feel
* Start to hack on new features like image uploads, starting a new
article, offline article saving, openZIM support, etc ...
* Localization for the user interface
* ... and whatever else you can come up with
Don't worry if you don't know Objective C, Java, etc .. All you need
to know is HTML5, CSS3, and JS. It's really simple to write these
apps.
Lots of pretty screen shots and a user flow diagram here :

Come join us on #wikimedia-mobile and let us know how it goes.

As GerardM noted the other day, we're planning a hackathon adjacent to
the WikiConference in Mumbai.
We'd love feedback on some logo ideas that one of our designers put
together, particularly with an eye to picking a design that resonates
with the largest number of people without triggering any particular
sensibilities. As noted, ignore the script -- these are just concepts,
and we're looking for feedback on the visuals at this stage:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/India_Hackathon_2011/Logo_concepts
Any comments are welcome -- there's a comments section below each logo concept.
(If you'd like to add your own suggestion, please do so!)
Thanks!

hi,
Warning: This is a loooonggg email.
We held our first WikiAcademy in Mumbai on October 1, 2011 at the Center for
Education and Documentation, Colaba. The session was attended by 24
attendees. Roughly, the sessions were:
1. Introduction
2. Creating accounts on Wikipedia
3. Introduction to the interface
4. Rules related to Wikipedia (5 Pillars, AGF etc.)
5. Go out and edit
This was our first experience with such an Academy and hence this note is a
bit detailed.
Many of the folks who came had used Wikipedia but had hardly ever edited
Wikipedia. There was a lot of questioning around the reliability of
Wikipedia as a resource. We had the services of Vickram Crishna to answer
these questions. After the round of introductions, we got
them acquainted with accessing Wikipedia, familiarising them with the
English Wikipedia main page.
The attendees were very interested in learning how to edit Wikipedia and
wanted to learn right from the creating accounts on Wikipedia stage. This we
did, only to realise the limitation existed on creation of not more than 6
accounts per IP address. We got around this limitation by allowing people to
register with dongles that a few people carried with them. Next time,
perhaps making an upfront request to allow more account creations from a
single IP address before the Academy might be a wise thing to do. Any other
suggestions?
Even after logging in the attendees appreciated a "Get to know your Screen"
session.
Pranav then shed some light on the rules of the Wikipedia (frankly, I have
never read this until a few days before the Academy!). Kundan Amitabh also
pitched in to help with a few that Pranav didn't know about. Kundan also
urged them to not give up on Wikipedia if their articles or sections of
articles were deleted. Keep trying! was the call!
In the last go out and edit session, we allowed participants to edit what
they liked. We moved among the audience helping where help was needed. We
encouraged the users to use the various icons on the WYSIWIG editor rather
than learn the Wikisyntax. We think that working on this for a few days will
help them learn things on their own.
There was a diverse audience with requests for specific follow up sessions.
We think that we could have concluded more properly than we did.
warm regards,
Pradeep Mohandas

Subject: Gautam John steps down from Wikimedia India board and Secretary's
position
To: wmin-members(a)googlegroups.com, Wikimedia India EC <
wikimedia-in-exec(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi Chapter Members and Wikimedian Community,
As you might have known, Gautam K John, stepped down from the Chapter EC
and Secretary's position recently. On behalf of Wikimedia India EC, I would
like to thank Gautam for all his contributions in bootstrapping the Chapter
for nearly three years. He has been great source of strength and wisdom to
the EC specially over the last nine months, as Chapter raced to grow
membership, conduct AGM and EC elections in a systematic manner.
As he is deeply committed to free culture projects including Wikimedia, the
members and the community can always count on him for any support and
advice.
We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
Sincerely
Arjuna Rao Chavala
