Hello everyone!
Program leaders have been inquiring about survey design since the creation
of the Program Evaluation and Design team here at the Wikimedia Foundation.
*Have you created or collected surveys for your program implementations? *
We’re excited to let you know that we are proceeding with exploring how we
can support your efforts to survey participants in your programs. In order
to proceed, we need your help! We would like you to share any surveys that
you have sent and collected with our team.
This will allow us to learn more about what types of information you are
collecting through surveying, and the types of surveys you are producing.
This will also allow us to work with you to build tools for better
evaluation and surveying!
#1 You can email me your surveys in email or as attachments
#2 You can email me a link to your survey
#3 You can post a link to you survey on meta

We’ve already identified a number of survey priorities, and while survey
development will be ongoing, we want to
be<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Parlor/Questions…>sure
to include the interests of everyone in our planning process. As we
identify, prioritize, and begin to take steps to meet the survey needs of
you and other program leaders, the more you are able to share the better we
can learn from what you’ve done, and the better we can respond to
everyone’s needs. If you have developed or used surveys to help tell the
story of your program, please send them to us so we are sure to review and
consider everyone’s interests.
Feel free to email me with any questions or additional information about
your surveying experience, or stop by the Parlor on
Meta<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Parlor/Questions>or

Hi everyone! (Important areas bolded for people who are TL;DR types[1])
As you may remember, the Program Evaluation and Design team here at WMF has
been doing evaluation of programmatic activities in the movement - with
your help! THANK YOU!
*We have released our next reporting page about our current focus programs
on meta about WORKSHOPS. *We appreciate everyone's participation so far,
and we've made improvements to the edit-a-thon page based on your feedback,
including bolding highlights for those of you who seeking a high level view
of our ongoing reporting.
*A third page is now on meta, and ready for improvement and commenting.
It's the WORKSHOPS page*, which provides information about:
- Program basics and history
- Response rates and limitations
- Reported data evaluation
- Priority goals as chosen by program leaders
- How much budget and time goes into planning workshops
- What participation is like at workshops
- Recruitment, retention, and replication details.
- Next steps (tool building, requests, support, etc)
*Feel free to improve and make edits on the talk page. And of course, if
you are a program leader/chapter that implements workhops and your data
isn't represented, please contact me to submit your data*.
*You can visit this new page here:*
*https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Library/Editing_workshops
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Library/Editing_…>*
We hope you find this report inspiring and helpful.
*Our next report we'll post will be about GLAM content donations*. I'll
send another email out about that soon.
Happy evaluating, and be sure to visit us on Facebook[2]

Hi everyone! (Important areas bolded for people who are TL;DR types[2])
*You might remember my email last week[1] that asked for your review and
participate in our ongoing reporting about data collection and evaluation
in the movement. *We appreciate everyone's participation so far, and we've
made improvements already to the edit-a-thon page, including rounding up of
data and a "just a numbers" section.
*A second page is now on meta, and ready for improvement and commenting.
It's the overview page*, which provides information about:
- Response rate
- Where the data came from
- Additional mining of data and how that happened
- Data and analysis
- Tools used
- Words and graphs used in reporting
- Next steps (tool building, requests, support, etc)
*A lot of questions that I've been asked about our reporting can be
answered in this page. *
The challenge is still out - after you review this page and the edit-a-thon
page,* if you feel the work you or your chapter are doing is better than
what we've been reporting - let me know!*
*You can visit this new page here:*
*https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Library/Overview*<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Library/Overview>
*Our next report we'll post will be about workshops*. I'll send another
email out about that soon.
Happy evaluating!

Hello everyone!
*As many of you may remember, the Program Evaluation and Design team
invited program leaders, such as yourselves, to voluntarily participate in
our first Data Collection Survey. Thank you for your participation!* As a
pilot survey, it has provided us insight into what you are tracking
regarding data in the programs you implement, and how we can better support
you in order to evaluate the impact your programs are making.
We have been looking at that data for our current focus programs:
edit-a-thons, Wikipedia editing workshops, GLAM content donations, on-wiki
writing contests, Wiki Loves Monuments and other photography initiatives.*
When the survey closed, we had responses from 23 program leaders from
around the world, who reported on 64 total programmatic activities. Our
team also collected data from 54 additional programmatic activities, to
fill out areas where we had gaps in reporting.*
*We're excited to announce that we have our first draft report ready for
you to. It includes data reported and collected about edit-a-thons:*
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Library/Edit-a-t…
We evaluated the impact edit-a-thons are having based on their goals, which
often include the creation of content on wiki, and the recruitment and
retention of new editors. This report is not final and we would like to
improve it over time.* Since this is our first time doing a report like
this, we want your feedback.*
*After you take the time to read the report, we would like your feedback on
the talk page about:*
- Whether the report is understandable and written in a way that makes
it useful to you
- What kind of information you would like to see more of / less of
- What we could do to improve the collection of data (e.g. would you
rather like to send us your cohort data and let us do the analyis? – this
might help with reducing your workload)
- Any other feedback you have.
*Secondly, we want to know if program leaders have more impactful or better
quality data than is reported here.* We had a lot of great data come
through, but, we also know, with 26 edit-a-thons being reported, there are
a lot more out there doing this specific kind of event. So please tell us:*Can
you do better than is reported here?* This is a chance to brag and
celebrate the work you've been doing, but didn't perhaps get a chance to
report during this first survey. We can't wait to hear back from you!
*So, in case you have run an edit-a-thon that you think was more successful
than any other edit-a-thon already included in our report*, please send a
quick email to sarah(a)wikimedia.org and I will follow up with you on the
next steps.
Over the next couple of weeks we'll be publishing additional reports, using
your feedback. Thank you so much for your time and contributions. And if
you need anything, feel free to email me or contact me on wiki.

Hi everyone,
I know we have some "wiki historians," on our mailing lists... I'm
crowdsourcing information from the community about when the first:
-GLAM content donation(s) happened
-online editing contest(s) (i.e. WikiCup, Iberocoop women contest, type of
events) happened
-photo competition(s) (i.e. Wiki Takes, Wiki Loves) happened
Now, some of us have different stories than others, and that is OK. I'd
love to hear what you think was "the first," in the Wikimedia community.
Your participation is important, as I'll be using this...oral history of
sorts - to write brief histories of these three programs for our upcoming
Data Collection Survey Report* that the Program Evaluation & Design team is
writing. And hopefully these histories will benefit others in the movement.
Participate here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Parlor/Questions
I won't be tracking or documenting responses on this mailing list, so
please share your responses and knowledge on meta. Thank you! Forward as
necessary!!

Hi everyone,
We've been working hard to create a new space for you to call home - well,
home for all things evaluation! We have partnered with our cohorts (ha!) in
the Grantmaking Learning & Evaluation team to create the ultimate space for
all things evaluation - from organizations to programs.
Remember. It's a new space, it's a work in progress. Visit us here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal
You'll find a Q&A board for discussion about evaluation, learning patterns,
case studies, resources, profiles, and much more.
We hope you like it, and can't wait to have you involved there! :)

Hi everyone,
Just a friendly reminder - responses to the *Data Collection Survey are due
October 7 *(by midnight San Francisco time, which is 07:00:00 Oct 8)
*This is a very important survey*, as it will help the Program Evaluation &
Design team get a better idea on the specific data you are gathering (big
or small) and what kind of tools and support we can give you.
We are then going to be aggregating the data (meaning making all your data
anonymous and combining it all together) you share and writing a report in
which we'll be sharing with you, the community as a whole, FDC, and the
Wikimedia Board.
I'll be personally reaching out to anyone who has not responded in the
upcoming days. And yes, it's voluntary, but, your response is really
important!
If you need a survey reminder, or feel you were sent the survey by mistake,
and someone else is a program leader who should receive it, email me.
(sarah at wikimedia.org)
*Here is a form we created to help you organize your data, download and use
please! *
https://docs.google.com/a/wikimedia.org/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqQxi0BdfXDsdD…
*IRC Open Office Hours on Monday, October 7 *
Jaime and I will be on IRC to assist you and answer any questions about the
data response survey. You can find us on #wikimedia-ped during these two
times:
15:30-17:30
and
22:00-00:00
You can also email, Facebook, or find us on meta.
Thanks everyone for your awesome work!
