== New program toolkit: Photo contests and events [2] ==
We have launched a new guide on how to implement a Wikimedia program: Photo
Contests and Events toolkit is now live! This is a work in progress, and we
look forward to community members actively contributing to what is outlined
in the toolkit. Some of the gaps are in the Plan subpage, on How to choose
the best program for your community, and planning award ceremonies and
follow up events. On the Run tab, there is a gap on how to help
photographers improve their skills. Beyond these, all sections can be
expanded and edited, and we look forward to community members contributing
what they know!
Explore (and contribute to) this step-by-step guide to run your first
event, find ideas to remix popular photo competitions, and locate useful
bots and templates to make the most out of your photo event. The new
toolkit has an improved design, optimized for mobile, that also shares
learning patterns with less clicks involved. Find experienced program
leaders on the Connect tab [2], and create a profile to offer your
expertise to others. We want to thank all the community members who offered
their knowledge to create this new toolkit, and we look forward to have
this tool expanded by wikimedians all over the world.
== Apply for an Individual Engagement Grant before September 29 [3] ==
The second round of Individual Engagement Grants (IEG) is accepting
proposals until Tuesday, September 29. If you have ideas for new tools,
community-building processes, and other experimental projects that enhance
the work of Wikimedia volunteers, start your proposal today [3]! Please
encourage others who have great ideas to apply now as well. Support is
available if you want help turning your idea into a grant request.
== New blog series: What I Learned ==
Starting this month, we are inviting community members to share a lesson
they learned while running a Wikimedia program or activity. The goal of
this series is to both showcase a the work done on a community, as well as
promote reports as learning resources. We aim at co-editing blogs with
community members, and we will publish one story a month, on the third week
of every month. If you would like to take part, please reach out directly
to María at mcruz(a)wikimedia.org, or leave a message on her Talk Page for

These new Workshop Kits are aimed at helping community leaders lead peer
and volunteer training. In each kit you will find all the steps you need to
take to host a Learning and Evaluation workshop, as well as infrastructure
needed, and all the resources to present. All kits have a learning journal,
for workshop hosts to be able to document their experience and share with
other community members across the movement. We hope to expand this
collection soon, with other workshop kits forthcoming.
If you are interested in hosting one of these workshops, get in touch with
the Learning and Evaluation team. Train the Trainer sessions will be hosted
at regional and global conferences and via Google hangouts. We look forward
to working with community leaders in workshop kit updates, facilitation and
translation as we work to build specific examples and case studies from
across the movement.

Greetings Program Leaders and Evaluators!
Important updates from Learning and Evaluation:
== Program leader panel on Writing Contests [1] ==
The Learning and Evaluation, together with community members from Kosovo
and Ukraine, co-hosted a program leader panel on Writing Contests [1]. This
virtual event was a chance for editors all over the world to connect online
and ask question about this Wikimedia program, and comment on the
experiences they shared. Topics discussed ranged from practical issues,
like having certificates, how to summon a large audience, and prizes; to
how to improve editor retention and how to promote a contest among
experienced editors. Revist the panel by watching the video, or reading the
notes on the etherpad. Don’t forget to check out the Writing Contest
evaluation report and toolkit! [1]
== New release: Editathon Evaluation report 2015 [2] ==
The new evaluation report 2015 for Editathons is ready for community
review! With this new release, we now have a more comprehensive picture of
Editathons than we ever had before. There is information about inputs,
outputs and outcomes, which program leaders can use as reference to find
specific information about editathons when designing their own. Review the
report on Meta and make comments and ask questions on the report Talk Page
[2]. Let us know how you use this information, and what could be possible
next steps!
== Wikimedia Documentation Directory [3] ==
This new community-led initiative is a way to easily discover
Wikimedia-related documentation including all outreach activities, like
GLAM and education. The idea was promoted by John Cummings, Wikimedia UK
volunteer, who adapted Hay Kranen’s Tool Directory [3] design into a
Wikimedia Documentation Directory to help community members share and track
their community and program resources and knowledge. Like the Tool
Directory which catalogues data tools, the Wikimedia Documentation
Directory will catalogue any documentation from any site on- or off-wiki
and allow you to search by title or keywords. We are now working to link
Learning and Evaluation resources on this directory as well. If you are
interested in supporting this initiative and want to submit your resources,
please do so via the google form [3]!
== Community Capacity Development: phase 2 [4] ==
Community Engagement Team at Wikimedia Foundation is allocating staff time
and funding to deliberate capacity-development projects with interested
communities in six capacity areas: community governance; conflict
management; on-wiki technical skills; new contributor engagement and
growth; partnerships; communications [4]. This is a new way of partnering
with WMF: through two way conversations (rather than top-down planning),
WMF will work with specific emerging communities to explore obstacles for
community growth and explore and pilot solutions together.
We prepared a page per such capacity, detailing challenges and possible
approaches to build that capacity. We welcome your feedback! Contributions
to those pages can be done in the following ways:
* Sign up on the sidebar of each capacity subpage if you want to implement
certain practices described,
* Provide more links to resources,
* Expand the Potential Solutions section with new ideas.
These pages, including your contributions, will serve as the basis for
specific conversations with specific communities to develop plans or
projects to build capacity.
As always, stay up to date with upcoming news and events by following our
events page [5]!

Greetings Program Leaders and Evaluators!
Important updates from Learning and Evaluation:
== Community Health Learning Campaign [1] ==
The Learning and Evaluation team launched a new learning campaign about
Community Health [1], that takes place from July 15 to August 15. We want
to capture community impressions on what makes a healthy community online.
Share your views and participate in a drawing to win a Wikimania 2016
scholarship! On the campaign page, you will also find how people engaged at
Community Engagement booth at Wikimania.
What makes you feel welcome on the wiki projects? What makes you feel like
you don't belong here? What shared values bring us together online? These
are some of the questions
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Evaluation/Community_Health_learning…>
that we hope will bring out community views on this topic. Engage on a
fantastic learning experience: Wikimania! Join us online as we launch this
conversation about Community Health. Contribute a drawing or answer the
questions below.
== How did Learning and Evaluation engage at Wikimania Mexico? [2] ==
The last movement conference was an opportunity for our team to engage in
different manners. On the days prior to Wikimania, we hosted a Learning
Day, where participants engaged in topics like SMART proposal design,
Volunteer Engagement, Reporting and Storytelling, talking about failure,
and a number of relevant tools for reporting. You can now revisit the
presentations shared and find on the event page the outcomes of the day
[2].
The conference was also the scene where we launched a new Learning Campaign
around Community Health. We asked people who approached the booth to tell
us what a healthy community looks like to them. You can engage online, too,
until august 15! [1]
Finally, our team hosted two more learning sessions at the conference:
Making it count (on data-driven decisions for Wikimedia programs), and GLAM
Learning Circles (to continue with the work started at GLAM-Wiki).
== New virtual meet-up: program leader panel on Writing Contests [3] ==
We invite program leaders to take part in a panel where they can present
their experience coordinating an editing contest on Wikipedia. This virtual
event will be a chance to look together at the data published on the
evaluation report after the last round of data collection. It will also be
an opportunity to get acquainted with different case studies across the
movement. Join us! Sign up on the Google Hangout event page [3]. The
meet-up will be recorded and available later on our Youtube channel.
== Community Capacity Development Framework [4] ==
The Wikimedia Foundation conducted qualitative research into strengths,
challenges and needs of different communities. The aim? To further
understand the breadth and scope of capacity needs in emerging communities.
The first phase of this framework was community research. To this end,
interviews were conducted with 16 emerging communities or countries through
in-depth video and in-person interviews with a small group of community
members. Read about the seven different capacities identified on the report
of phase 1 of this project [4].

Important updates from Learning and Evaluation:
== Writing Contest Report in Peer Review! [1]==
The Writing Contest Report[1] is now available on Meta and in Peer Review.
We are going to publish the report more widely on July 3rd, 2015. The
report includes data from 39 contests about inputs, outputs and outcomes.
The contests in the report had a total of 745 participants who added nearly
23 million characters to over 15,000 articles, across 11 or more different
language Wikipedias. You will also find several quotes from interviews with
contest organizers that offer context and first-hand insight around setting
goals, planning and tools for writing contests.
For the peer review, let us know:
- To what extent is the report easy or difficult to read?
- To what extent is it clear or not clear how to use the report?
- In what ways might you use this report in your community?
- Any other feedback?
Please take a few moments to read the report and send us feedback!
== Writing Contests Program Toolkit: Sneak Preview! [2] ==
The writing contest toolkit is the second from a series of program guides
on how to implement more effective Wikimedia programs. It was created
gathering knowledge from experienced program leaders who have run programs
like The WikiCup, Catalan Cultural Challenge and the WikiWomen Prize, among
others. We are now sharing with you the draft preview of this new
resources. Be part of the writing contest learning community; sign up in

for:
* Wiki Loves Monuments
* Other Photo Events
Reporting captures programs which were completed by between September 2013
and September 2014 reported through grants and voluntary reporting. We
encourage everyone to review the reports, and start a conversation on the
discussion page. As we walk together towards a better understanding of
Wikimedia Programs, we want to thank everyone who contributed their time to
the Data Collection, and encourage, as well, to keep reporting and tracking
your programs.
== Learning and Evaluation workshops at GLAM-Wiki Conference 2015 [2] ==
This weekend, our team will be attending GLAM-Wiki Conference in The Hague,
Netherlands. On Friday, April 10 (15:30 - 16:30), we’ll host the workshop
“Pitching GLAM-wiki partnerships”. On Saturday, April 11 (14:00 - 14:50)
there will be a Wikimetrics training; and following that, the workshop
“Tracking and Reporting GLAM-Wiki Partnerships” (15:30 - 16:30).
Both workshops will have guest panelists that will share their experience
working in partnerships, as we look forward to build a learning circle
powered by peer learning.
== APG proposal open for community review [3] ===
Round 2 of the Annual Plan Grants program [3] is underway with the
Community Review process open for your comments and questions. Six
proposals were submitted this round to the Funds Dissemination Committee
from the Centre for Internet and Society, Wikimedia Armenia, Wikimédia
France, Wikimedia Italia, Wikimedia Norge, and Wikimedia ZA with requests
totaling $1,531,687. [2] These six proposals, developed based on the
organizations' annual plans, include programmatic and operational costs,
and are requests for general funding.
All members of the community are invited to review any or all of the
proposals, and to provide thoughts and ask questions on the discussion
pages of the proposals. The community review period lasts until April 30.

Greetings Program Leaders and Evaluators!
Important updates from Learning and Evaluation:
== Let’s Talk Diversity: Report of the campaign now available [1] ===
After a month dedicated to the first Learning Pattern campaign on Meta, we
are happy with the results and the lessons learned in this first
experience. Read the report on the campaign’s page on Meta [1], and leave
your comments and recommendations!
== Next in-person workshops: GLAM Wiki Conference 2015 [2]==
If you are attending GLAM-Wiki Conference [2] in The Hague, note that
Program Evaluation and Design Team will be hosting two workshops, both with
a panel of presenters that will share their experience on two main themes:
* Pitching GLAM Wiki partnerships: best practices for how to identify a
good potential partnership, share the important steps and strategic points
for planning and launching a successful pitch, and call out any mistakes to
learn from.
* Tracking and Reporting for GLAM Partnerships: best practices for how to
identify key tracking and reporting needs, share the important steps and
strategic points for implementing successful tracking and reporting to your
partnership collaborators, and call out any mistakes to learn from.
Join the events on wiki and Facebook [2]. Hope to see some of you there!
== Hashtags on Wikipedia [3]==
Did you know you can use hashtags on Wikipedia? If you are hosting an
editing event, ask your participants to save their edits with a specific
hashtag on the Edit Summary, and listen to it on Hatnote. If broadly
adopted, it will allow for complex analytics on the volume and quality of
contributions (and contributors) by campaign, tool or organization. Read
more about this on Hatnote blog[3]!
== Community initiative: 100 Wiki Days [4] ==
Our attention was brought to a recent community initiative by
[[User:Spiritia]] from the Bulgarian Wikipedia. The initiative is named
100wikidays [4]: it’s a personal challenge, in which a user aims at the
creation of (at least) one article every day in 100 days in a row.
This initiative has resulted in the creation of total 176 articles thus
far, and more articles are being created and users are signing-up everyday.
You are welcome to join the community, and/or help spread the word!
As always, stay up-to-date by connecting on our portal [5].
On behalf of the Learning and Evaluation team, thank you for your time and
attention.
