Dear New England Wikimedians,
This is just a quick reminder that community elections for the board
of trustees for the Wikimedia Foundation are occurring, and voting
ends tomorrow night (just like the Massachusetts State Primary, which
you should also vote in if you live in MA!)
Instructions and a link to the voting portal is here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022/Communi…
There are six candidates, all of whom are qualified, and there are two
open seats. There's links to community questions and answers that
might be helpful and there's also a new experimental election compass
tool here: https://board-elections-compass-2022.toolforge.org/ (though
I cannot vouch for the tool's accuracy/usefulness). The voting is a
ranked-choice system. Anyone who has made at least 300 edits on any
project, plus at least 20 edits between January 5th and July 5th of
this year, is eligible to vote. Many developers, staff and grant
recipients are also eligible:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022/Voter_e…
The Wikimedia Foundation trustees are volunteers who provide oversight
of the WMF CEO and who approve the WMF operating budget, annual plan,
fundraising, and high-level policies. While this role typically
doesn't directly affect day to day work on the projects, there are
implications for what strategic directions the WMF pursues and the
relationship between the WMF and affiliates. Let me know if you have
questions about the trustee role. And I encourage everyone active in
Wikimedia and Wikipedia to vote if you are eligible!
best,
Phoebe
There's a public-information / wikis / reliability / misinfo event coming
up in Boston that needs extra workshop space near BU.
Does anyone at BU or Northeastern have the inside scoop on room
availability on your campus?

Questions for board candidates are being proposed and the most-supported
ones will be asked of everyone. If there is something you would like them
to answer, let me know. //S

Hey Bostonians,
I'm Ziski from the Global Advocacy & Public Policy team. I'll admit to this group I'm a half New Englander now based in the Old England, but I'm from the small-and-mighty state of NJ. I wanted to personally invite you to our first-ever monthly conversation hours. The call is on July 1 at 16h EST. All information you need to participate is on this Meta page [1].
The agenda is split between a dedicated theme for the month and whatever items you wish to cover. This month we will share some of our work on disinformation. There is no set agenda for the second half of the call - feel free to add your item to the list of topics in the etherpad [2]. Come and talk to us! Ask us anything, or tell us anything, related to public policy and advocacy initiatives for free knowledge online. For example:
* You want to learn more about our team and our current initiatives
* You would like to share a policy development or advocacy campaign idea and would like to get feedback or support
* You have questions about a specific WMF policy priority or development
Hope to see you there... or at the next one!
Ziski, on behalf of the Global Advocacy team

Dear NEW,
This year we have 13 candidates standing for election, and a new combined
affiliate/community process.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022
1) In early July, affiliates vote to choose a short list of 6 candidates.
(1 vote per affiliate)
2) in late August (15-29), the community will vote on that short list.
The candidates
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022/Candida…>
have provided initial statements. Phoebe & I will set up a way for you all
to cast votes for the shortlist; based on that we will file a single
collective vote for NEW.
The candidates will have a chance to say more about themselves on Meta; we
will point to that and any other detail when returning to this thread in
July.
Warmly, SJ
This summer two Trustees are being elected to the WMF Board.
* Please encourage people you would like to see on the board to stand for
election
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022/Apply_t…>
.
* See below if you know someone who might want to be in a
candidate-evaluation group.
A new process is being tested:
--> Affiliates appoint 9 people to an analysis committee
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022/Affilia…>,
which broadly evaluates candidates
--> Affiliates vote in a primary (using STV, one vote per affiliate) to
choose 6 top candidates
--> Community members vote to choose two trustees from that pool .
If you would like to be on the analysis committee, or to nominate someone
else who would be willing and suited to it, list them at the top of the
section here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022/Affilia…>
(or
let me or phoebe know).
Warmly, SJ

Dear wikiographers,
We are compiling our report about regional updates from the past year, and
would love to include any of the following that would be of interest to
others:
~ projects or editathons you have been part of,
~ sessions you have led at Wikimania / other events / other non-WM
conferences,
~ collaborations in progress (partnerships or content collabs)
~ writing or talks of yours
Our annual reporting year ends in November, so feel free ot include
anything more recent than November 2020. You can share updates either by
email or on Meta

Subject: [Wikimediaus-l] REMINDER: Voting for Movement Charter Drafting
Committee open until October 24, 2021
To: Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States (WALRUS) <
wikimediaus-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
REMINDER
Community voting to fill 7 of the 15 seats of the Movement Charter Drafting
Committee (MCDC) is open and runs until the end of Sunday, October 24,
2021. This is a very important group that will help draft a charter for the
Wikimedia Movement that will undergo community feedback and eventual
ratification.
BASICS
Basic information about the MCDC is here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter/Drafting_Committee
An "election compass" was created as a Q&A system to help voters evaluate
how well the candidate's views matched their own. That official site is
here:
https://mcdc-election-compass.toolforge.org/
Voting happens with single transferable vote (SVT) using SecurePoll here
until October 24:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter/Drafting_Committee/Electio…
ADDENDUM
That is the base information. However, I am including more practical
knowledge and wisdom from various sources. Why? There are 70 candidates for
7 seats. If that sounds daunting, you are correct. There has been
widespread concern that the average voter cannot meaningfully evaluate the
candidates.
Therefore, here are some of the best practices and resources so far. These
are all publicly available tools and content, but I am highlighting them
here for the benefit of the community.
-
A table of all the candidates, locales, languages, and basic
information. This was gleaned from the original candidate statements but is
more easily viewable (and sortable) in table form.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter/Drafting_Committee/Candida…
-
Browse the full election compass results with this tool (full
disclosure, it was created by one of the candidates, but it faithfully
reports the compass answers in a different format). I would recommend
browsing all the questions, but these specifically show the widest range of
responses: 1, 6, 11, 24, 34, 45, 92
https://krehel.sk/Candidates_Drafting_Committee_Movement_Charter_Statements/
-
A user perspective of how to navigate the election process from longtime
Wikimedian Lodewijk Gelauff, posted on Facebook and publicly readable even
without an account.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/wikipediaweekly/posts/4382804991767298/
Regards,
- Andrew (User:Fuzheado)
