Subject: [Wikimediaus-l] WikiCon North America 2024: Scholarship apps +
program submissions now open!
To: Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States (WALRUS) <
wikimediaus-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello,
WikiConference North America is excited to share that the 2024 conference
will be taking place in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States! Our annual
Culture Crawl will take place on October 3, followed by conference
programming from October 4-6. Our theme will be "Crossroads", inspired by
the Indiana state motto and also alluding to the multiple meanings of the
word—as the place where Wikimedians from across the continent cross paths,
as well as what we hope will be a turning point for participants.
Please visit the conference website for more information:
https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2024/Main_Page
If you are interested in attending, please read on for scholarship
information and program submissions.
We are now accepting scholarship applications through May 31. Any active
Wikimedian in North America is eligible to apply to have their travel
and/or accommodations covered for the event. If interested, please visit
https://scholarships.wcna.wiki to apply.
We are also accepting program submissions through May 31. If you'd like to
submit a lecture, panel, roundtable, workshop, lightning talk, or other
meetup, please visit https://submissions.wcna.wiki.
For those interested in attending, registration will be opening soon, and
you will receive another email when it does. For your reference, pricing
will be identical to last year. Individual tickets are $25, and
professional tickets for those attending on behalf of a company or
organization are $100. All proceeds will go towards this and future
WikiConference North America events. We will also offer free tickets to
enable everyone to participate regardless of financial constraints.
If you plan to travel to the conference from outside of the United States,
please review entry requirements through the U.S. Visa portal (
https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/visa-information-resour…).
Document applications and renewals can take a while during this busy travel
season, so you're encouraged to check them now!
If you have any questions, please reach out to the team at
info(a)wikiconference.org. You can also chat with organizers and attendees in
our Telegram group at https://chat.wcna.wiki/.
Thank you!
On behalf of the WCNA organizing team,
Kevin Payravi (User:SuperHamster)

Dear ones,
Wikimedia's lead counsel Chuck Roslof is in town this week, and it's been a
while since we had an in-person gathering. A few of us met up today and
talked about getting drinks tomorrow at 5. Give a shout if you're
interested in joining!
Warmly,
SJ

Hi Wikimedia Boston!
My name is Coira Williams and I am an Archives Student Assistant at Mount
Holyoke College Archives and Special Collections. We're thinking of hosting
an Edit-A-Thon on March 8, to improve information on Mount Holyoke's
extensive network of alumnae.
I'm sending this message to a: soft-launch the event, and b: ask for help.
Though I have ample experience with editing on my own, I need help with
teaching others and effectively communicating Wikimedia protocol. Please
let me know if you or anyone you know would be interested; whether
in-person or virtually.
Thank you for your interest and patience. Hope to see some of y'all soon!
Sincerely,
Coira

Hi folks,
I'm planning an edit-a-thon at MIT on Tuesday, January 16, in the afternoon
and you are all cordially invited. We'll celebrate Wikipedia's 23 birthday
(one day off of Wikipedia Day, which is Jan 15), and this year's public
domain day - lots of good stuff
<https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/2024/> is now in the public
domain. Our theme this year is "Boston and Beyond" - let's edit on topics
related to campus, Cambridge, greater Boston, and beyond.
The meetup page is here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Boston_and_Beyond_IAP…
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Boston_and_Beyond_IAP…>
(and please do register here <https://libcal.mit.edu/event/11685850> so I
have a good headcount). I'll bring snacks, and come by anytime; we'll start
with a class on how to edit.
Also, a special request : please help me find and list articles and
things-to-do related to the theme of Boston and Beyond, and link them on
the meetup page above. Articles about the quirky and obscure corners of our
fair region, and articles with issues that could be easily worked on by new
editors, are especially welcome.
thanks and hope to see you soon!
Phoebe
Dear Devang Dave,
I also joined this mailing list quite recently, and I’m pretty pessimistic about a meetup like this happening anytime in the near future. (The last meetup was in September as I wrote earlier; the last meetup before that was in January 2021, shortly before I myself joined English Wikipedia and made my first edit.) But if it works for you personally, I’ll be at the MIT campus this afternoon and evening, so you can meet me there then.
Sincerely,
duck_master

There, if I recall correctly (I didn't take a photo sadly), we agreed that we should meet on the last Saturday of each month. In particular, that means that the next meetup should occur this Saturday, October 28, 2023. Are any of y'all down to meet that day? I think I'll be available then, except from around 2pm to 4pm, and I have no strong preference of my own as to the venue.

There are lots of monuments around here, including [a good handful that are still yet to be photographed](https://maps.wikilovesmonuments.org/map?c=42.3452:-71.0795:12…! Hi all!
There will be a very casual meetup on the MIT campus on Saturday, September
30th, 2023 at noon. We've got room 5-134 booked. Please swing by! No
specific agenda - just chatting.
I'll be aiming to coordinate at least one meetup per month, not necessarily
at MIT, so don't sweat it if you can't make it.
Page is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Casual_Meetup,
feel free to sign up there. Further logistical information will be posted
both on this mailing list and at that page.
Thanks Phoebe and everyone else for helping with the coordination!
Best,
Enterprisey
Howdy all,
I just moved to the area and was interested in attending any regular meetups in the Boston area, if they exist. If they don't currently exist I'd be happy to organize some.
Best,
Enterprisey
There were a half dozen Wikipedians at the lovely Berkman Center 25th
reunion today so we're headed to Stoked on 1611 Mass Ave for the next hour
or so to catch up. Photos incoming...
