Hello all,
To help us with mainly an editorial backlog at WikiJMed for the moment,
I've found many potential editors at Upwork, when searching for
"Mediawiki":
I suggest that we add $1000 to the next grant application for this
purpose. I think we should then post a job description and choose among
those replying to that entry. In time, we can try different freelancers for
various tasks, and evaluate how much value we get from the money.
Hopefully, we'll find someone to hire on a regular basis.
Best regards,
Mikael

Hi all,
I am new to this process and still trying to find my role in WikiJSci,
so perhaps some onboarding processes might help alleviate some of the need
with managing submissions? I am still learning quite a bit about this
process and trying to understand the existing workflow has been daunting.
That being said, I do like the idea from Thomas regarding hiring a
casual editorial assistant to be shared between groups. Might be a good
way to establish some efficient workflow models to follow when submissions
come in. Just a thought.

1/ The wiki solution to this problem has always been: share the work,
allow collaborative editing.
Until now there is no software to facilitate us, but perhaps we should
also explore the possibility of using a peer review platform to make work
easier.
2/ I'd like to point out that I am now also a "review" editorial board
member of Frontiers in Pharmacology; and they have >3000 such "editors" ( I
guess PLoS One is similar)! The downside is that you get some more peer
review requests somewhat out of your specialty; but still it helps them get
reviewers!
So maybe instead of inviting reviewers we should invite more editorial
associate editors first, then ask them to review.
PS I'm not against hiring someone, just wanted to explore alternatives
too

I'm overall in favour of hiring a casual editorial assistant who can be
assigned basic tasks if and when the academic editors need it. Such an
assistant could be shared amongst the journals and offered hours based on
need at the time. I want to avoid the risk of overloading busy editors with
too much work. The main risk would be if liaising with the editor took more
time than directly doing the task.
Currently the WikiJournal of Humanities has no submissions
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/b1N5CwVLQmiX5yJZCV_EMi?domain=en.wikiversity.org>.
For the other journals, the majority of authors have been invited by
editors (very few people spontaneously hear about the journals). I'd
recommend for WikiJHum that editors contact: A) people in their fields who
would likely write good articles and B) people who have already written a
Wikipedia article of sufficient quality to warrant academic review.

is coordinating?

Hi all WikiJournal participants,
Because of an increased burden in the stage of finding and inviting peer
reviewers for submissions, we've been discussing at WikiJMed about
including funds in our next grant application to Wikimedia for hiring a
paid editor to help out in this task. It would be unfair to have it for
only WikiJMed so I take it up with all of us, also since WikiJSci currently
lacks a willing peer review coordinators
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/RJgXCxnMRvtKpxnqFvvFms?domain=na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com>
for
the 2 most recent submissions
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/53WnCyoNVrcEGLqmcQC2At?domain=na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com>.
A paid editor could look up potential peer reviewers and either invite them
directly, or prepare an email list with links to their credentials to board
members.
A paid editor would be able to help in many tedious tasks, including to
(citing Thomas' entry at WikiJMed):
· send followup emails at certain dates
· track submissions
· copyediting (for a wikijournal this could be things like
image formatting, finding who images should be attributed to, checking ref
formatting)
· formatting the final pdf upon acceptance
· managing the doi submission to crossref upon acceptance
· If having bot-experience, program bots for technical tasks
such as to keep the {{article_info}} template synchronised between main
page and subpage and add accepted articles to the relevant issue page
These tasks would not involve direct knowledge of the subject material.
The idea would be to have them handle those elements to free up time for
the medical/academic editors to focus on specialist tasks.
What do you think for WikiJSci and WikiJHum?
Best regards,
Mikael
