Dear fellow editorial team members,
Gwinyai and I are making a video to explain a few features of WikiJMed. The
video will probably include a collage of COLOR photos from the editorial
board. I will not include photographs that are not close to standard i.e.
that have people's faces and eyes covered or are cropped at a large angle
etc. (Specifically I mean Jason Dixon and Amelia Buttress, who seem to have
missed personal emails I wrote noting the issue, and it may have gone into
their spam bins.o) This choice is not meant to make anyone feel disincluded
but to give the collage a uniform look. If your photo used for the
editorial board does not meet these requirements but you want your
photograph in the montage please send it to me today or I will just not
include it . And also please consider changing your photo on the wikipage.
It really detracts from us looking professional to have such non-standard
photographs. I know as scholars you are not concerned with such trivial
issues, but if we want to raise the prestige of the journal, it couldn't
hurt.
Dr. Candace Makeda Moore, MD
Hi All,
As per our last meeting, as making videos takes a lot of time, I kindly ask
that you (someone, anyone?) consider tweeting to help get the project keep
moving. Tweets do not have to come from the social media group only, in
fact it would be better if they came from everyone. Either of the following
videos linked below has never been tweeted about or shared to social media
as far as I know. The one video that was tweeted has multiple times as many
views as the others here. I know there are social media pages just of
Wikipedians, so please share there, tweet or otherwise share everywhere:

Hello every body,
It has been quite some time since I have contributed, and I hope this
message finds you healthy and well. Here is a petition. The goal is to push
some editorial boards to drop their lucrative private journal titles and
launch free ones under diamond-copyleft models (as happened to JMLR
w:Journal_of_Machine_Learning_Research
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journal_of_Machine_Learning_Research> and
LingOA w:Glossa_(journal) <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossa_(journal)>).
https://journauxscientifiqueslibres.wesign.it/en
In the related video (yeah french too :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PrMrJqsVhw) I've been focusing on the
'french system' (episcience.org) as an Overlay Journal seemed the easiest
first step for tenured researchers. Feel free to comment debate and produce
around it so wikijournal may benefit from this call.
I've another in english incoming that I have to "re-film". It's the
occasion. (The script is below)
As usual in my actions I've been drawing arrows toward wikimedia, you'll
find under "about us" a wikipage to debate it, change-it etc. I'll also
receive correction there (I hope). I invited to duplicate the study-page
toward en.wikiversity but if you found adequate to forward here (on meta),
I guess it would be adequate too if contribution is more active. Feel free
to translate, distribute... and sign if you agree of course ;-)
BR
Rudy
PS: I started a translation in German. But this language is way out of my
brain since I'm not using it anymore.
the short call was as such
"Wir brauchen eine Änderung der wissenschaftlichen Publikationspraxis.
Sagen wir "raus" zum lukrativen Eigentum, das die Produktion und
Verbreitung von Wissen parasitiert. Wissenschaftler Wissenschaftlerin bitte
erstellen Sie Freie Wissenschaftliche Fachzeitschriften und tragen Sie zu
diesen bei, nativ unter Open Access, APC-frei, Copylefted."
english script
Covid-19 kills, people are afraid and opportunities are opening up.
Petitions are flourishing to re-open access to scientific publications.
We are talking about it. We twitt - chat - sign…
But is that really all of what we can do?
This is the current situation (svg business scholar)
For those who do not know the scholar publishing business, this is simple
representation of how it runs.
The researcher searches, finds, writes his methods and his results, then sends
it for free (most the time) for peer-reviewing and publication in the
journal of his choice.
Then "peers", meaning other researchers read it, correct it, reject or
accept it. The selected “Papers” integrate the journal it is now in the
scientific literature.
The publishers that own the titles then charge these same researchers for
accessing what was produced by them. Actually it is the taxpayer who pays.
Apart from this lucrative loop stands archives where researchers can
deposit their work freely.
You’ll find on the internet majors such as ArXiv or HAL and lots of
institutional repositories too.
If you gave out your rights on the papers … well RomeoSherpa’s site
explains you what to deposit and publishers policies regarding this action.
Of course some researchers in the 90ies thought about using archives as
support for journals of their own. It is called Overlay Journal and is
probably the easiest and cheapest way out of the lucrative loop.
Platforms even exist to do so.
The petition approach is basically asking those you send it for free to no
longer charge for access to what has been given to them.
This is not the only petition currently, nor the first of the kind.
But is this the only way?
Extract "we can't go out"
Do the exercise. Ask a 6 years old child "On this drawing darling, where
should we cut the loop so that you no longer have to pay two or three
times? "
business svg
In universities, these issues are not always understood, explained,
taught, minded,
cared about.
Extract Thèse Gruson
But when you are in a good editorial position (members of multiple
editorial committees, notable reviewers referees, decorated researchers,
etc.) you may have better things to do, in my opinion, than petitions.
You can do better. You have to do better.
Others have already done so!
In linguistics,
LingOA
in mathematics,
JMLR
And without suffering from the problem of "impact factors"
Paid / Free
MLj / JMLR (boxed)
etc. there are others (FJN) “FGN”
I know that the situation could be described in a more complex ways.
Models may vary between platforms
Episcience.org from
french CCSD – a CNRS part
and the OpenEdition journals,
...
Journals are also used for scholarship grants programs. But is this not the
charity of the powerfuls, funds collected on access to knowledge, funds uses
that depends on the will of the editors and publishers?
What do "the Souths" say? Do they want charity or free access to research
from their peers around the world? Where does the recognition of work in
the diversity of languages stand?
Mr. Selosse wishes: “to send a strong signal to the big publishers”
So dear professors _ anyone in such a position _.
Sign out of your editorial board with your colleagues and launch your own
title. You’ve seen it works.
Diamond journal model : online - free of charges (no subscription or APCs)- and
in copyleft to do things right. OK
Wanna send a signal, send a big one. Drop the lucrative ones and go with
your boards for a diamond model overlay journal.
Thanks for freeing our episteme.

Dear fellow Wikijournal editorial team,
I apologize if some of you receive nearly duplicated or even triplicated
mail on the issue but I still have not heard from most of you. As some of
you already know I have been working on video content for us. Although I
would love to already open a Youtube channel for us, I know it would be a
mistake without consensus around many issues.
I am going to send out a few video clips, which I made unlisted so they can
not be viewed without the link most of which were meant as the start of a
longer video. I hope that at the least they can be recycled into social
media if there is not enough consensus to start a Youtube. I am not going
to keep working on the project if there will not be a consensus.
https://youtu.be/-i_nJT5VYkIhttps://youtu.be/3nC4j7Tv7nQhttps://youtu.be/8b-tcZ08c2ghttps://youtu.be/Hm9hLqq9WGwhttps://youtu.be/vX6VP1ggSHs
About the content: Most of the videos have footage that has been cleared by
the stock company I contract with to be used by WikiJournals for free (I
already corresponded with them and have it in writing) and other material
included is my own animations and music donated for our free use by Sarah
Dickerson Baxter. This is to say, this was all made for free so far.
I have already heard from Kelee Pacion, Sarah Vital, Mossab Banat and Gwinyai
Masukume. Due to my upcoming work issues, I would like a decision on
this sooner as opposed to later so I can schedule accordingly assuming I
will be the main one working on it.
Please reply to me as soon as possible with one or more of the following
statements:
1. I am against having any Youtube channels and video content because
_____________
2. I am for having one big Youtube channel for all the journals
3. I am for having Youtube channels for ____ Journal, but not the others
4. I want further discussion and clarification on ___________
5. I am for having separate Youtube channels for each Journal
6. I am not only happy about the idea of video content, I will help produce
some
7. Something else __________________
8. I trust the social media people can sort this without me, so you can
stop sending me emails about the issue
9. I think we should have a channel if we vote for each video and discuss
it as a group until there is consent over every video
Thanks, Makeda (Dr. Candace Makeda H. Moore)

Hi all WikiJournal participants,
I received an email from the Brand Project Team of the Wikimedia Foundation
about feedback on naming convention proposals. As for WikiJournals, as I
understand it, it will mean that instead of "Funding: Wikimedia Foundation"
at for example the WikiJMed page
<https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/WikiJournal_of_Medicine>, it will instead
say "Funding: Wikipedia Network / Wikipedia Movement / Wiki" or perhaps
"Part of the Wikipedia Network / Wikipedia Movement" or "A Wiki Project",
depending on which proposal wins. We are therefore asked to discuss this,
and then have a representative fill in the survey on behalf of WikiJournal.
Best regards,
Mikael

*Dear Affiliates, This is the 2030 Movement Brand Project affiliate survey
to provide feedback on the naming convention proposals. One survey should
be submitted per affiliate. The answers will be interpreted as the opinion

refine and recombine elements from different proposals into a single naming
proposal. Responses will be published on Meta-Wiki and attributed to each
affiliate, but only the survey administrators on the Brand Project team
will have access to the email address connected to each response. *

I have no problem, personally, with the aims but the question is whether or
how we would actually change ourselves so as not to be hypocritical. As
discussed in our recent journal meeting we have a slant towards certain
types of people (UK,EU,USA, NZ and Australia), and I'm sure within those
societies there is also a slant e.g. our volunteers in India are probably
not from the Dalit class. Yes, of course there are exceptions e.g. I'm
African-American and but that is probably anomalous. Maybe this should
prompt more discussion. Maybe we could have some kind of initiative to
start Wikipedia in Residence positions in 3rd world countries and among
certain historically marginalized groups in the first world? I'm just
brainstorming. Feel free to tell me about how I've got this all wrong...
