Making the priority higher as bots using unpatched pywikipedia mess up
interwiki order on fy.wikipedia (like in that diff:

@Nicdumz: see #2787237
@Russblau: interwiki.py now consistently messes up the interwiki order and
therefore fywiki doesn't grant any bot bits anymore until this case is
solved. I think that the priority of this case should be higher than 5.

Message:
Priority 9 means "no one can use their bots for anything". This is clearly
not a priority 9 issue.

Message:
Trying to explain a little bit more. The order specified at meta is correct
but the fact that na is deprecated and redirects to no > na (in the alpha
order) leads to a bug in that particular case. Other deprecated wikis are
not a problem because they either have no replacement or have a replacement
that comes before in the alpha order.

Comment By: Nakor Wikipedia (nakor-wikipedia)
Date: 2009-06-21 22:52
Message:
Well this one is a little bit tricky. Because na is deprecated and
redirects to no, currently all no links at fy.wikipedia gets placed where
the na links would be. The patch attached fixes the problem by putting the
na links (deprecated anyways) at the same place as the no links.
There might be a more elegant solution but I did not want to break
anything else so this one looked good enough.

Message:
Thanks for the report.
Where were you told that it was incorrect? The meta page does not mention
that detail (
http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Interwiki_sorting_order )
We'd like the communities to as much as possible centralize all the
information on that single page for future reference. If you could pass on
the message, I'd be very grateful.

Summary: Replace in-code translations by gettext
Initial Comment:
Having thousands of lines of translations in the text is not very elegant, plus it requires people to look at the code to make translations.
Using gettext could make this a lot easier to manage.
Attached is a patch that changes the family.py to use gettext translations in some places, as well as a simple script to generate and compile translation files.
Since the translation is not dependant on the user's locale, but on the wiki's, the i18n.py file created by the patch allows choosing the language to get the translation from, and then getting the translation string.
In order to translate, "Category" for a French wiki, for example, you just need to do _GT("fr").ugettext("Category") where _GT is a short alias for the get_translation function in i18n.py
The .po file for "fr" language code is partly filled up for some of the translations.
Sorry if this does not cover all strings so far. It only covers those I needed so far. If there is interest for this feature, I can help to continue the integration, as well as automatically generate the .po files for every language based on the current namespace dictionary.

Pywikipedia (r-1 (unknown), 0 (unknown))
Python 2.6.2 (release26-maint, Apr 19 2009, 01:56:41)
[GCC 4.3.3]
When modifying the path for performing imports, the config userData path should not be used, since the files are laid out in a static fashion. Instead, the __file__ path allows for the path to always contain the required files.
The included patch fixes the various import errors I found while trying to develop a bot that acted from outside de pywikipedia source folder.
